Broke up a full 200g cake and had some 520 Jin earlier. Not bad or amazing, but it has some fresh shou fishiness (nothing egregious), so it is a little hard to make out some notes. I wrote about it, but I think I'll reserve my thoughts until it's had time to settle post-shipment. Wonder if two weeks may be enough. I'll at least share a quick infusion shot and then dump some cake opening pics I took for fun.
Pic of whole 520 Jin cake surface.
Splitting the 520 Jin cake. The complimentary pick they slipped in worked rather nicely. Much better than typical kitchen knives or too-thick awls.
Closer shot of the 520 Jin leaves post-split. My pics had bad lighting and turned out blurry, but I thought to still share. Have more, but nothing important. Just for fun.
>>21734476they have sales on individual items, but no site wide sales or events that I'm aware of. their prices are so good though that this isn't an issueit's a low margin reseller for a Taiwanese brand. they don't really do black friday deals that I'm aware of
>>21735188Might get the Jingmai Autumn Gushu. Or not.
>>21735220why did you split the cake?
>>21735291I wanted to break up a full 200g portion to more readily grab from mostly for the sake of convenience, but also to perhaps aid in airing out some of the fishy wet pile smell (wo-dui or whatever). It's not heavy, but I think it'd help move it along faster and maybe make it a lot more pleasant to drink.
Oh lord I love it when a seller only describes their tea as some Chingchong Lingling string that never appears on the entire internet outside their store page and doesn't describe the style or variety in any other way except "tea".No, I don't trust myself to identify it on cake appearance.
>>21735204Nice choice of pic op!Chen Sheng Hao shill is back to tell you their Black Friday sale (25% off) is on right now and that you should use my referral link to get $20 off (I get a $20 off coupon too). They don't pay me, I just want a discount myself. This is my last post for the season unless someone else brings CSH up. I don't like spamming.Link:https://i.refs.cc/i9DCkFen?smile_ref=eyJzbWlsZV9zb3VyY2UiOiJzbWlsZV91aSIsInNtaWxlX21lZGl1bSI6IiIsInNtaWxlX2NhbXBhaWduIjoicmVmZXJyYWxfcHJvZ3JhbSIsInNtaWxlX2N1c3RvbWVyX2lkIjoxOTIwNjcwMzk3fQ%3D%3DThere should be a pop up in the lower left saying "Get your $20 off coupon". If it is not there you need to disable adblock or use a clean browser session (e.g. right click Chrome and chose "open new window with a temporary profile").I actually just drank their generic sheng teabag from the sample packs a couple years back. It honestly was just ok. I've never had much luck with young sheng teabags from any vendor. I don't buy them, just drink them when I get them free. If oversteeped the teabags not just get bitter but also have an off flavor. It had good Qi at least this time, lol. Probably made with dust from CSH's factories. Anyone else here have better luck with sheng teabags?
As long as I breathe I'll hate white2tea's branding
There are so many versions of the bo jun ripe. Some are as lose tea in cans, then there are cake versions 500g and 200g and bricks but I would have to buy 1000g. If its the same tea(and I think it should be) then I have no idea why price per gram varies. Also if anyone knows some taobao store with samples let or cool factory minicakes/dragon balls, I'm all ears. So far I've had only few haiwan samples(searching for haiwan nets interesting results to say the least) and mengoku roshi samples. Im kinda done with xiaguan but never had any dayi or other less known factories.
>>21735475The ripe teabag in the csh box was pretty good desu. Tasted like an aged ripe or liu bao
Will we get new black teas for black friday on farmer leaf? Autumn release or late summer oolongs too? I still have a lot of sheng to drink and will order next spring, don't really care for ripe unless I'm in hong kong. I pray for a new Ao ne me soon.
>>21735477Kuura does the whole hipster tea thing better desu, their aesthetic is more cohesive
>>21735477We're not buying from LP or YS. Fuck off.
>>21735601I do not often drink shou but I can see how it lends itself better to teabags. I still have the csh ripe teabag to try sometime. Will post about it when I do.
>>21735666That's not the issue, I like their teas. But when I buy from teaencounter or YS I can give the cake wrappers to my girlfriend for her collages. Having a sample of "The Tea Spot 2019 "Wisdom of the Ancients" sheng" puerh today. Not a tea I would have bough myself but not actually bad either. In fact the quality is quite good, though I am not sure I trust the price. The Tea Spot is one of those shops that overemphasizes supposed health benefits and underemphasizes the tea itself. My sample of "Wisdom of the Ancients" is a no longer quite young sheng with a citrusy and floral side to it. Not groundbreaking but no real faults either. Would drink again if I had more but not going to run out and hunt down a cake. The video on it is kind of funny.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4d-PAtXZskhttps://www.theteaspot.com/products/ancient-single-tree-sheng-puerh-cakeWhats everybody else drinking?

>>21735884I gotta get one of those sea dyke productions. Wouldn't be surprised if I enjoy it a lot in relation to price, I like roast.
>>21735902It's good if you get it at a nice price I think, for daily drinking yancha, but not worth going far our your way for. Has the correct mouthfeel, flavour profile.KTM has an AT1171 tin, haven't had it but that looks like good $/g if the quality is about the same as this.
>>21735914yeah, I'll check in the nearest chinese store or buy it next time I order from KTM
>>21735848>Whats everybody else drinking?Trying to get rid off all of the cheap black tea I have, so drinking that. It's not bad. Nice change from drinking exclusively young raw.
>>21735818On a related note, I was once given a free bing of dayi 7572 from a Chinese "internet model". A legit first batch production from the late 2000s at that. It is a good cake, I still have some. Kind of feel bad for the family member who gave her a tong of it when she went overseas.>>21735914>KTM has an AT1171 tin,Nice, did,t know KTM sold tinned factory brand oolongs.
>>21735985>I was once given a free bing of dayi 7572 from a Chinese "internet model"damn, what's the story behind that? usually people give onlyfans girls money, not receive puerh from them>Nice, did,t know KTM sold tinned factory brand oolongs.those are a new addition to the site. prices seem decent, would probably have to go to taobao to get them cheaper
>>21736034>damn, what's the story behind that? usually people give onlyfans girls money, not receive puerh from themNot a simp, and I don't hang with hoes, I just got lucky and was in the right place at the right time. They wanted attention more than the tea. Probably hoping to get more followers, but maybe they just wanted to share. I wont say I am not grateful for the tea, it was genuinely appreciated regardless of intent.>>21736034>those are a new addition to the site. prices seem decent, would probably have to go to taobao to get them cheaperThat has always been the problem withe the factory oolongs, few western shops stock them at fair prices.
Finally! It was sitting somewhere in my state for eleven days, as anon said longer than it took to transport and clear customs, I think.I couldn't be happier. Looks like plenty of new things in the trick or treat bag this year. The linen bag it comes in is always nice, too.Not pictured: A Prosbloom mini sample.
>>21736188Got mine as well today, apparently the dogs weren't out today and the mailman could deliver it. First time ordering puerh, and, uh, I didn't expect it to be so... pungent. It's a little stinky. More than I thought it would be.Still looking forward to trying it though.
>>21736194I have the same mouse lolfresh ripe pu-erh can be a little stinky, especially after shipping. it's a leftover aroma from fermentation and goes away on its own with time.
>>21736194>>21736188Good stuff, ladies. Don’t forget to dilate.
>>21736194Give it a little time to settle if any seem a little fishy-funky after shipping, but I'd think most should be fine. Don't hesitate to experiment with temps/brew times.>>21736188Nice that it finally came through. I don't think I saw anyone get everything in the sale like you did. Wonder if your 520 Jin stock still carries some of the fresh wo dui residual aromas like mine. Hoping maybe two weeks could be enough to clear up the cake I broke up.
>>21736487I've felt before that I have an insensitivity (or worse, some degree of fondness) of some fishiness from wo dui. I've had plenty of cheapo factory ripes plus a generous amount from YS, KTM, and W2T. Never before have I turned down a ripe session due to a flavor I thought was off. I definitely have favorites and least favorites, but nothing I would describe as unpleasant funk.I'm going to crack one open tomorrow and see what I think.
>>21736519NTA but I'm also insensitive to the "fishy" note others describe ripe having. Do you eat seafood at all? I don't and I've always assumed that's the root of my insensitivity. It's hard to associate the "fishy" note with actual fish when I only experience it in tea.
>>21736557Plenty of seafood. /deenz/ veteran. Love it all. From that perspective, I would say I don't notice a parallel between the smell of fish, cooked or raw, and ripe puerh.
>>21736194Bro, as one teasister to another, don't get started on the puer. It will turn your bussy out and make a slave. Puer addiction is just like drug addiction. From procuring it to the ritualistic way of ingesting it, it's indistinguishable from drug addiction. Puer has been running through and devastating the tea community like crack in the hood or AIDS in the gays did in the 80s.
>>21736194Did you get all shou puerh or some sheng puerh as well? shou puerh, young sheng puerh, and aged sheng puerh are effectively three different types of tea. So if you don't like one you may still enjoy the others.>>21736562>I don't notice a parallel between the smell of fish, cooked or raw, and ripe puerh.Ofttimes people use the work "fishy" colloquially to describe things they consider smelling "off". It is frequently misused imo.
>>21736769>Did you get all shou puerh or some sheng puerh as well?I honestly have no idea. A lot of these wrappers I don't recognize on their website so no clue what they are. Does w2t only carry shou, or does it carry some sheng too?Trying a ball of 'regular enlistment' now, it's interesting but I don't hate it. Very earthy but smooth and I do taste a little sweetness too. Brewing it western style because my pot is too large, I'd need to use like 4 balls to have the recommended amount of leaf for gongfu.
Are the tiny particles in the "tea soup" lifeforms?
>>21736835If you only bought the bag of minis from the "Shulloween" sale it will all be shou. "Shulloween" is a pun on shou and Halloween. W2T sells both sheng (raw) and shou (ripe) puerh. Young sheng looks and tastes more like a strong green tea.If you want to learn more about how puerh is made check out these videos:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QE-aXKxPagYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oI4yDyH1oUM
>>21736835>Brewing it western style because my pot is too large, I'd need to use like 4 balls to have the recommended amount of leaf for gongfu.Good call, don't bother trying to gongfu brewing in a big pot unless want oodles of tea. Shou is not fussy and is relatively easy to brew any way you want. Young sheng requires a bit more fineness.
>>21736848theyre trichomes from the tea leaves, some types of tea have more than others. its not a bad thing if theyre in your tea
>>21736848It mostly looks like pollen. The long ones are definitely a microorganism like vinegar eels though.

So I tried this drink (pic related) at a local Korean diner and I really liked it. Tasty and sugar free. I purchased some boricha (bagged tea) to recreate at home but it didn't taste as nutty. Anyone here familiar with barley teas know what I am missing? The boricha I made was nice but not nearly so toasty or nutty, it kind of smells like alegria (Mexican amaranth candy).

1L jug + tea = ???what tea(s) are good for just throwing into a jug to be covered by hot water?could I kind of grandpa brew it by refilling the jug when I'm halfway through drinking it?will it make nerve gas?
>>21737300White tea like shou mei, hei cha of all types, classic oolongs (not so much super green ones), most green tea all seem to do well grandpa style.I've had success with some young raw puer and yancha as well. Things might be a bit different in a big vessel because it'll stay hot longer. Maybe try like 8g and dial it in
>>21737300Just calm your autism and brew a pot western style like a normal person. Every tea can be brewed western style. With a pitcher like in your pic you'll spill leaves in your cup, in case the thick glass didn't explode before even you make it to that point.Or hell use a french press.

/tea/bros, I have a friend who's really into tea but I'm a total beginner. What sort of gift would be appreciated? I'm thinking of the 2022 Yi Pin Chen Sheng Raw Pu-erh Tea Sample Box by CSH. Any other rec's? Is that a good choice?

Do you know if they drink any sheng or what teas they typically like?>Any other rec's?I have always had good luck with FL's black and oolong teas. Today it is "random 2002 cnnp sheng puerh" for me.An old school looking production with mixed grade but unchopped leaves. The tea brews up dark orange. The flavor profile is camphor, petrichor, stone, peat, and a faint wisp of smoke. Still has a nice kick to it despite being tempered by age. No wet or off storage notes. I quite like this one and would buy more if I could. I tend to enjoy aged teas with a dominant camphor note.Whats in you cup?
anybody have experience with this website?

>>21737611>it didn't work You didn't listen. Use the strainer directly in the pot directly and be a happy man. For bitterness reduce brewing temp and/or use less leaves.

>>21739557yup that's the one. I mentioned it a few threads back it's my favorite one. It isn't bitter but smooth and have a plum and fruity aftertaste. I asked them if they had more teas like this one and told them i wasn't a fan of the raw one because of the bitterness. they told me (in order of my picture):>这款暂时没有哦,亲亲,这款会比7572用料更细嫩,口感会比7572和醇品细腻醇滑,滋味会比醇品更浓厚,陈香带有甜香哦 >This one isn't available right now, dear. This one uses more delicate ingredients than 7572, resulting in a smoother and more refined texture, a richer flavor, and a sweet, aged aroma. The tea has a moderate fermentation stage, resulting in tightly rolled, uniform leaves with visible golden tips. The tea liquor is bright, deep red, with a rich, smooth, and mellow flavor and a pure aged aroma. Please take a look at this one, dear. There are quite a few repeat customers. >亲,金针白莲是茶叶居多的,制作的茶底都是使用茶芯,用料比较嫩,甜度比较高哦>Dear, Golden Needle White Lotus tea is mostly made from tea leaves, and the base is made using the tender tea buds, resulting in a higher sweetness level. I mentioned i didn't like a few that i tried, loved the chunpin, but don't like some of the bitter raws they sell. I kept it to only items they sell and the CS recommended a few. they even have flavor charts for some items as well. The cs on taobao for most things is really nice. also wish that there was nice CS like that here still.

I've had four of my teas from my W2T Shulloween shipment so far each day since I got it. In order, it's been:>2025 520 Jin>2024 Pink Candy>2022 Frankenpu>2025 Regular Enlistment (today). There are many more to try from the grab bag, and I don't want to spam the gen, but I have been writing notes for each. Not sure if it'd be best to post on a Pastebin or similar to avoid flooding. At the very least for now, I'll post my brief notes on my (ongoing) Regular Enlistment session:____7g/90C/10sDry leaf initially smells of sweet soil, but then light syrup, and oddly, butter. Wet leaf blends the butter and syrup notes rather well, almost resembling American pancakes. Unexpectedly nice.Low-medium thickness, low bitterness, medium-high astringency.Flavor on the palate itself is less pronounced, if a little flat. Initial infusion was too light; clearly needs temp and time to push it along. Still, hard to describe; something between non-sweet soil and old books/wood in aftertaste. It isn't particularly bad, but a bit strange when paired with the otherwise very pleasant leaf aroma notes.
2025 Regular Enlistment ball and wrapper. It's a weird one overall to my senses, especially for a relatively young shou. The aroma is nice, but the palate experience is a bit of a letdown when paired with it. Still grateful to have tea today.
>>21741074I'm a fan that one, seems I'm in the minority camp. Thanks for the write ups
>>21741091Of course. Though, do my notes align with your personal impressions much? I think the aroma is rather pleasant, I'm just wondering what's up with the sip experience itself. Maybe I could infuse it differently to get more out of it.
>>21741122I got one out to try and square our impressions and realised I got it mixed up with Icabod.RE I think mostly same as you actually, not much for taste but I enjoyed the mouthfeel, and I think I gave it extra points for not being generic W2T shu #3743
>>21735204The more I read about tea the more I learn I am doing it wrong. Without breaking the bank how do I get a good reliable cup. Everything just has the flavor of hot water.
>>21741162What are you drinking at the moment? Is there something you already like?Otherwise somebody gonna tell you to buy 20 year old mouldy liu bao (me)
>>21741074>There are many more to try from the grab bag, and I don't want to spam the gen, but I have been writing notes for each.I think it makes most sense to post how they compare to each other. Which you would buy again, duds, highlights etc
If I'm doing western style brewing and all I have are minis, does it matter if I break the ball apart first or can I just let it spread apart naturally while brewing?
>>21741497It'll likely spread without fuss. You can break it up if you want, it doesn't matter.
>>21741497Steeps faster when you break it up, your choice.
someone fix the gentry. its got the wrong temp and slightly wrong amounts for oolong on the gong fu chart
>>21741610*rentry
Where is that taobao tea anon? Did your stuff arrive without getting confiscated by the FDA new customs thing?
>>21741610The Oolong parameters in the Rentry worked well for me.Oolong is a vast field of very different teas which makes it hard to generalize. Counting seconds for the steeps is kinda autistic, people will quickly do it by feel and adjust to how the tea actually behaves.
>>21741636I guess but if it had broader parameters it'd make it clear that you need to figure out what works for each tea.if temp said like 80-100 and the amount was like 4-6.5g it'd be better IMO
Japanese blacks any good?
>>21741642>it'd make it clear that you need to figure out what works for each teaIf that's not stated outright it probably should be.Giving such a broad range would kind of make it useless. It's a jumping off point, and I don't think it's wrong at all either. In any case those parameters aren't going to ruin your tea, they might not suit your taste but it's up to you to adjust to suit your taste no matter what the starting point was. Also why would you just say it's "wrong" and "slightly wrong" without telling us what you think it should be? Should the rentry anon just guess as to what you think is ideal? There is no one definitive "right" or "wrong".
>>21741714I though it was clear that I just meant in my opinion because I was talking about something subjective sorry.you make a good point about if it was more broad it wouldn't be a good jumping off point and I hadn't rlly thought of that, I was just kinda half asleep and brewing some young lightly oxidized oolong and thought about how it might be best for the rentry to have a range of weights/temps rather than just saying 6-6.5g 100°C
>>21741728Yeah sorry if I came across as a dick. Some guy was bitching about the rentry a little while back like a know it all but without offering any constructive criticism and I might have misdirected my annoyance at him towards you.Anyways, what kind of oolong specifically? I haven't had many because I prefer darker ones, but even with my Anxi tieguanyin I like to use 100°C, I've never got any bitterness or anything.
>>21741643>>>/pol/
>>21741643no, blacks in japan no good
>>21741738its all good man :)I can't find really fuck all info on this tea other than its from ureshino in saga prefecture and its made with yabukita.it was a horribly overpriced sample I got from tealyra, I really hate that company but they sometimes have good tea.>I like to use 100°C, I've never got any bitternessyeah i think for oolong getting bitter is mostly a function of how long its steeped and in what volume of water. if you put a lot in the gaiwan and do a short brew with 100°C water you can get zero bitterness from even shit like dan cong that is known for being easy to accidentally make bitter.however I kinda feel like I get a more complete flavour profile from oolongs with a slightly longer infusion so I'm starting to experiment with lower temps.
>>21741757oh i forgot to say also that with very green oolong i feel like the higher temps can cook off some of the more delicate flavours. idk if that's science but it makes sense in my head xD
>>21741757>>21741766Jap oolong sounds interesting, I've never had one. I'm kind of too lazy to experiment with temperatures below boiling for anything other than green tea. If the tea can't handle it then oh well, there are plenty that can lol. It could be the case that more delicate flavors of green oolongs get lost but idk, I prefer dark roasted stuff anyways
>>21741829fair enough.its pretty good but not worth the price, if you can get it from somewhere reasonably priced id reccomend it, otherwise id stick to chinese and taiwanese.
>>21741643Japanese can't make a good tea therefore they can't make a good black tea either. >>21738249Around 5kg last time I checked. Could be less now, I was doing some cleaning. Cam anyone recommend any good dayi raw?Something other than 7542.
>>21741888>Cam anyone recommend any good dayi raw?I hear the 8582 from QuicheTeas is good
Farmerleaf will release some black friday promo on ThursdayThey posted photos of some little cloth bags. Maybe some sort of new sampled?
>>21741888>Japanese can't make a good teaGreens shit aswell?
>w2t special sold outDo they just make a small amount of it or is it really this popular with the tea people
>>21742011Yeah they always go pretty quick, I think the answer is yes to both.
>>21741977Show me your FL carts
>>21742120I would probably buy a cake of autumn Jingmai gushu. I got the 2023 as a sample and liked it and it's 20$ cheaper this yearIf they add autumn LME small trees I might buy that instead. The gushu is more pricey and I haven't heard if it's good yet
>>21742179I'm gonna sample it for sure only because its supposed to be just the sweet varietal. The spring small trees with both bitter and sweet varietal mixed were too much for me.
>>21742179>autumn Jingmai gushuWas eyeing that one up myself, or maybe the gua feng zhai
>>21742053Well the way it gets hyped out i thought it would sell out on the 1st day but it was up for a decent amount of time
>>21741643I had one that was nice. Tasted like cherries.
>>21742365iirc it has done in previous years. It's a pretty slow year for tea it seems.
>>21742430mmmh, absolutely divine lukewarm water
Has anyone here had W2T's Bonesy yet? I can't tell if I'm getting sick or something, but the aroma is so faint and unclear for me right now, it's almost uncanny. Not sure if I should even bother with notes.
>>21735204is it fine to brew loose leaf tea in a french press?
>>21743098Yes.
>>21742011>Do they just make a small amount of it or is it really this popular with the tea peopleMost likely to both. It is also cheap enough that people buy multiple cakes or tongs making it sell out faster.>>21742365Last year it did sell out in a day or so. I wanted some but waited and missed out
>>21743098If the glass part is tall enough, the leaves will probably have sunk to the bottom by the time you'll pour out the liquour (though stems might float), meaning you won't have to press the leaves, potentially squeezing out bitterness, or tainting the flavour with coffee that's stuck to the filter bit. It's just decanting grandpa style.>>21741981I like genmaicha, but haven't had any luck brewing gyokuro. You need one of those autistic flat teapots to do it properly, which seems to go for a lot of japanese tea.>>21743187Doesn't the description actually say "buy a tong or two for aging"?
>>21743098Yes, but personally I find it requires a little bit of extra agitation to get the leaves to give up the good stuff over a more rounded pot..
>>21743485>when you squeeze leaves, they will seek revenge and release undesired bitter flavorstea lore>>21743707lmao
>>21743485>You need one of those autistic flat teapots to do it properlywhy tho? I'm sure there's some autistic reason for it, but it eludes me.
>>21742354The 2023 Jingmai autumn gushu sample was very soft with a nice depth and relaxing
>>21743485>Doesn't the description actually say "buy a tong or two for aging"?Achctually you should buy it all to get the real w2t experience. I just cant take this aging meme seriously. Their target audience are western normies and unless they have good setup with somewhat constant temperature and humidity it will age like shit. In europe/murica people just dont have the same free perfect storage conditions like in jingmai for example. If tou want aged stuff, buy aged factory cakes straight from chinks. It's the best way. Western vendors have interesting young stuff and you can straight away know if you like it or not without waiting a decade.
>>21744300I agree. Western vendors overemphasize aging when the reality is a lot of their tea is not made to be aged and has no proven aging potentialJust because it's technically raw puerh, doesn't mean it will get better with age. And long term aging of puerh in the west is annoying to get right
>>21744307To my taste, with the tea that's good to drink fresh it's not good by 2 years like green tea.. I don't know if it's my storage causing it
Teewald Advent 2025 contents for anyone who is interested.Anyone else couldn't resist buying an advent?
>>21743485>>21744300>>21744307>Doesn't the description actually say"Drink now or age for the long haul." Really not all that egregious. You don't need to imagine things to get upset at a vendor you don't like.https://white2tea.com/collections/latest-additions/products/2025-snoozefest
>>21744334What is your RH?Could be the tea, could be a lots of things. There was the controversial post about YS cakes that were process too green so they dont age for shit and in ten years all you got is stale tea, which is funny especially since they charge quite a lot for older cakes. >>21744350Fair. Must have been the last year's version or the one before... I dont remember desu, I've look at their stuff few years back, got angry by the lack of actual info about what the fuck am I buying and never opened their site again.
>>21744362>What is your RH?55-65%, at various times, only intended for keeping the cakes good while I drink em, but stuff ends up hanging aroundI've noted similar "flat" taste in some older drink now cakes from vendors, but haven't had enough to feel comfortable coming to a conclusion yet. For now I just buy what I'll drink in one year>>21744336I'm surprised to see one that actually has interesting tea in it, not bad
>>21744362>last year's version or the one beforeIts been a straight copy paste job every year. He actually fucked up and posted the wrong free shipping price for a while this year. I guess you can bitch that they mentioned "hype" from 2017-2019.https://white2tea.com/products/2017-snoozefest
KTM black friday promo is active btw. 10% off on everythingI wonder what FL will add tomorrow. They definitely teased something aside from a sale
>>21744300I disagree. Storing tea properly for the long term is not difficult. Once setup, the effort to maintain it is very low. "Aging like shit" requires utter negligence. It takes years to fuck up a cake excluding foreign contaminants. By encouraging Western normies to grab more than just immediate consumption, vendors are encouraging them to become hobbyists and collectors. Sure the cynical board view is "normies out reeeee" but that's not how I view tea. I want good Chinese tea to be as popular as fine coffee. I want more of my family, friends, and city to be independently curious about tea.I think you're getting caught up on the minutiae of aging that is done by obsessive tea bloggers. Their work is important for understanding the relatively new frontier of Western aged tea, but it is not essential. It is not essential to have perfect storage conditions. Minmaxing is antithetical to the hobby.>If tou want aged stuff, buy aged factory cakes straight from chinks. It's the best way. This can be true at the same time. That doesn't invalidate long term storage of teas at home. Nobody in the aged spirits or tobacco world would tell someone to buy only on demand.
>>21744514>By encouraging Western normies to grab more than just immediate consumption, vendors are encouraging them to become hobbyists and collectors. They just wanna sell stock. Becoming "collector" is just one of many predatory tactics, look at funko pops. >I want good Chinese tea to be as popular as fine coffeeI have nothing about good tea becoming mainstream. If anything it would probably freed teaculture from hipsters and spiritual nonsense, two of my biggest gripes.
Redpill me on pressed black tea. Good or gimmick?
>>21744300>Their target audience are western normies and unless they have good setup with somewhat constant temperature and humidity it will age like shit.Even with a substandard setup, taking a good tea into the future, where it is otherwise unavailable and sold-out is kind of cool.
>>21741643I've never had any, but from what I hear neither have most japs. They tend to drink foreign blacks and oolongs.
>tfw no autistic teapot-making gf
>>21744577i don't think it makes much of a difference other than most of the premium material probably doesnt get pressed into cakes so if its going for a premium price its probably not worth it but for storage purposes its probably nice
Always a slightly bitter feeling to finish a tea, even if it was only a 25-gramme sample from years ago that you don't plan to buy more of...
>>21744893>i don't think it makes much of a differenceAgreed, though aged dianhong does change slightly.>most of the premium material probably doesnt get pressed into cakes so if its going for a premium priceTrue for the cheap Chinese cakes but some of the western vendors like W2T and YS do commission premium dianhong cakes made out of choicer pickings. My understanding is that dianhong as a whole tends to be cheaper because it is typically made from small/young plantation bushes or off season pickings from puerh trees. Most old tree yunnan tea leaves go into sheng because that market tends to pay best.
>>21744336hey, that's pretty cool. maybe something I can afford to do next year.
>>21744408>I wonder what FL will add tomorrow. They definitely teased something aside from a saleI am curious too.I know LiquidProust plans to drop a bunch of stuff on Black Friday. He does not always do percent off discounts but he often has new interesting drops then. For example he had some good (and cheap) Lao Man E dianhong cakes several years back. Hoping he has some good budget options this year.
I thought Black Friday was last Friday? American holidays are weird.
>>21745179Friday after Thanksgiving. But marketing is pervasive so we've got "black friday" sales from october to january.
>>21745179Back in the day Black Friday really was only the Friday and maybe the following weekend. Eventually it got extended a few more day with Cyber Monday online sales the week after Thanksgiving. Also traditionally there was a huge focus on "Door Busters", big ticket items on deep discount but with limited stock so people would wait in line for hours or even camp out to try and get them. Nowadays many shops start sales start weeks before Black Friday/Cyber Monday and there is less emphasis on Door Busters with more general discounts instead. The biggest sales still tend to to be on Black Friday/Cyber Monday however. Honestly, It is better this way, I don't miss waiting in line or fighting the crowds and the retail or online shop workers undoubtedly appreciate not being swamped quite as badly.
>>21744865Is there a version of this that's not at ADHD speed

>>21745901Nice, finished my 2023 FZH last year.I still have some 2023 Bangwai Small Trees left and it developed a more pronounced tobacco note in the meantime.
Any of you anons ever get concerned about cleanliness and/or safety of tea?I'm talking about both the general hygiene and cleanliness surround its production, storage, transport, etc... but also the risk of land and water contamination in the country of production. For me:Japan - my favourite teas, no concerns, top tierChina - a step down, but nothing to put me off my daily keemun. not concerned about hygiene etc more pollutionKenya - I occasionally like it as a strong breakfast tea. I've actually visited tea plantations in Kenya. Very poor, but good people. I feel like such places are at the minimum threshold of food standards. India - I know it's a meme... but holy shit it's a horrendous place. I've had the misfortune of having to go there several times. It's every bit as bad as you think. To the degree you'd burn you clothes and suitcases rather than bring them back into your home. Not only does hygiene simply not exist in their minds, but every square inch of that country is polluted. I can't see how anything grown there can be safe for human consumption. I appreciate there are some famous teas from India, and it's a country with a big tea history, but I can't get over my India ptsd.
>>21746001>Japanjaps use a shit ton of pesticides, but so does all agriculture so... it is what it ishonestly i drink a lot of ripe and that shit is made by dumping the leaf on a warehouse floor, wetting then leaving it to compost for 2 months.as for india that place should ease your mind because if they can live like that then the human body is FAR more resilient than our pussyfooting hover parents ever imagined.
>>21746027>japs use a shit ton of pesticides, but so does all agriculture so... it is what it isYeah, no escaping it. I have to be realistic - I'm not going to be buying bespoke tea from some hillside in Bhutan or something. Japan, like Europe, at least has some sort of regulation and standards. > honestly i drink a lot of ripe and that shit is made by dumping the leaf on a warehouse floor, wetting then leaving it to compost for 2 months. That in itself doesn't bother me though. I'm not expecting lab conditions or anything crazy. I live in the countryside and I'm used to see normal food production. It's no different to lots of other food processes. When I watch videos of tea production in places like Taiwan, for example, the factory at least looks reasonably clean and tidy. It doesn't produce an instant feeling of repulsion. That factory floor in India will be horrific. > india that place should ease your mind because if they can live like that then the human body is FAR more resilient than our pussyfooting hover parents ever imaginedYou can't live like that. If you go to India and eat in 'regular' places you'll be in trouble. Plus, I'm thinking long term here. The hygiene aspect is one part. But there's a lot of literature out there about contamination in tea from India. I'm an oldfag with a fucked brain, so it's less of a concern to me... but I worry about young family members.

>>21746257I didn't try all of the listed teas before for a try out I think it's better than ordering a fa zhan he full cake at 42$. You have black tea, white, sheng and shou the price for value I don't know but the variety is good. For a first order on farmer leaf I would take the sample to get an idea of what he sells. Oolongs are also good but missing from the sampler would push the price higher too much I think. Little 5$ cup with the sample for 48$ after discount that's pretty good.
>>21746264The jingmai sun dried pack on the pictures looks to be more than 20g but listed as such I don't know if the picture of listing is wrong. Also that jingmai black tea from spring non gushu is not listed as a stand alone for some time now.

>>21747479>Moreover, much of the commercially available matcha abroad is culinary grade, intentionally more bitter and often masked with sugar or syrups, rarely resembling the unsweetened, whisked matcha served in a quiet Kyoto tea house.
Currently revisiting Quiche Tea's Favorite's Set.Tastes different from when I initially tried it. I might've mis-stored it, but I am not sure. On the 2003 Changtai Brown, I am getting pure notes and autumn leaf pile. I recall there being more nuance previously. For the 2008 Dayi 8582, I am getting notes of white grape, sweetness, sourness, and a taste of ripe fruit. Wet leaves smell of apricot. I will note that I live in an area where the humidity inside is naturally higher (60-75%). Is it necessary to look into getting Boveda's, in that case, or nah?
>Thomas M. Grömer, from Vienna, Austria, is a successful European tea entrepreneur known as the “Tea Pope”. In the 1990s, Thomas went to Japan to study, majoring in tea at university and obtaining a Japanese tea taster certificate.>After graduating and returning to Vienna for military service, Thomas worked as a journalist for several years and interviewed many entrepreneurs, which inspired him deeply and led him to decide to start his own business. He approached investors to propose his idea and together they formed a tea company, which was successfully registered in 2003. Got frustrated by the lack of stock on FL, said fuck it and somewhat impulsively dropped 130€ on almost 2kg of various ripes (and a white cake) from quicheteas.First time ordering from a non-boutique foreign store, hopefully I won't get euroraped by eurotaxes (FL always made sure of that) and my order won't take months to show up. >>21748282I've ordered from them twice to the EUNo issues. They did lower the stated value, so taxes were lowI would have probably gotten some aged raw from them too, they have the best prices on factory classics. Literally half or less of the price from some other vendors
>>21748293I originally wanted to stock up on cheap FL ripes and whites, both out of stock. I like stuff I can just dunk in a cup and mindlessly drink grandpa style. Quicheteas was mentioned here and there and had a lot of what seemed like beloved teas I'd never tried, mostly dayi, for very low prices. >>21748308$30 for 1821g of tea, if you go past 2kg it's $35. Somewhat expensive but Tee Kontor Kiel is right next door and they had me pay 12€ for like 400g of tea so I don't really mind, everything was so cheap it just works out in the end even with shipping+taxes.
>>21748311Aged raw is pretty different, the 2005 t8653 I bought from Quiche basically tastes like wood, barbeque, menthol cigs and chocolaty charcoal with a nice mouthfeel. All of the fruity and green notes of young raw have been aged out
>>21748325That sounds pretty good actually, every young raw I've tried has been in this weird place like it's trying to be different types of tea at once and it just doesn't work all that well.I checked that t8653 and it's a bit more cash that I'm currently willing to spend on a single cake for now but I might get a sample one of these days.
>>21748282uhh, FL is really not a ripe specialist. Why didn't you get Shulloween? It was far below $10 per 100g and grandpa style friendly. Anyways, let us know how your budget mulch turned out fren.>>21748300>They did lower the stated valueI always tell vendors not to do that. I had two tea packages permanently seized by customs already (FL and Awazon). Chinks putting forged incoices on parcels is the main reason they are now looking extra close. One time I had to show up in person with the original shop invoice and my Paypal payment confirmation for them to check if it lines up.Tax on food items like tea is only 7% in my country so I much rather pay that with the real invoice and live in peace.>>21748311For me young sheng is a very easy and fun to explore category. Aged stuff (shou or sheng) is harder to get into.
>>21748344>uhh, FL is really not a ripe specialist. Why didn't you get Shulloween? It was far below $10 per 100g and grandpa style friendly.I sampled a lot of their stuff and the cheap ripes were bretty good so I wanted to buy more, plus I like their transparency. I've never ordered from w2t but they do seem to have some good shit, to be honest I was going to order either from Quiche or from them, Quiche won this time.>Anyways, let us know how your budget mulch turned out fren.I will, see you guys in 6 weeks kek
>>21748344Shulloween is more expensive than factory ripe. It's a fun event if you like dragonballs, but not an outstanding deal if you just want the best value per gram
>>21748344>Tax on food items like tea is only 7% in my country so I much rather pay that with the real invoice and live in peace.Makes sense. It's useful for EU VAT though, which is 20 something percentFunnily enough Awazon put the real value on the package and I had to pay full VAT. Same with Yeeon. All other chinese stores seem to lower it by default unless you ask them not to
>>21748337The 2011 Jinse Yinxiang is similar to that and cheaper, but has a bit of fruitiness still left. Still a great value aged raw if you like barbeque smoke
>>21748417Interesting, they don't even mention smokiness in the description, not that I expect them to be accurate but still. As usual the only reliable source of information is other anons on a Peruvian noseflute tuning forum.
>>21748448The typical chinky descriptions don't have much in the way of notes, just assurances that the tea is good quality. Farmerleaf has good descriptions, but on sites like Quiche they don't tell you muchMost Xiaguan raws from that period are smoky, it is a well known house taste of the brand
i got this from the bargain bin at the asian grocery. it's chinese black teait has some anime guy on it idk why
>>21748055Their black tea is good(deep forest) and I don't know any other vendors that sell something comparable but cheaper. Their puer was ok, but definitely not worth the extra money.Maybe the tua chua, but they don't have that this year. Not sure if I'm getting to that $77 free shipping mark... anything else notable from them?
Farmerleaf is already out of LME Autumn gushu and Jingmai Autumn gushulooks like a lot of people waited until the sale to buy the autumn teas. glad I pulled the trigger on that Jingmai. the sample I got was much better than the Miyun
I purchased tea 2 weeks ago and now it's on sale, resulting in me failing to save $9 Now I will have to commit sudoku (but first I must finish all my tea)
>>21748655That's why people wait for black FridayI saved a whole 3.5$ on my KTM order, pure skill, took months of planning but it's possible
>>21748655I'm in the same boat desu, could have saved $100 on my order from KTM, oh well
>>21748713Slightly cheaper at QuicheTeas btwIt was on sale some time ago for 100$ per cake too
>>21748739yeah I saw that but KTM let me pay with bitcoin which was more comfy, and I liked their storage for that cake
I'm struggling to find temporally matched teaware to my puer and it's killing the huigan, anyone know where I can get some mid 90s porcelain ware, Dehua preferably?
>>21748862look for one of these, they made lots of them in the 80s and 90s:https://www.banateacompany.com/pages/Vintage-Tea-Cup-Translucent-Rice-Grain-Pattern.html?srsltid=AfmBOooVDrPsBBJvC0OfycyCZThdfCVZ-8nrc8Pj3AJRhCjA5QQuPP0j
>>21748862>anyone know where I can get some mid 90s porcelain wareNo, but this is pretty cool.
Reading this thread, you'd think Puerh is the only type of tea. Any love for Darjeeling?Just made an order at Thunderbolt tea. (currently having a 50% off black friday sale) Buying some First Flush and this green tea from Arya tea estate of which I still have the 2024 harvest and have been drinking sparingly because I didn't want it to finish.
>>21748892I admit to having neglected darjeeling, how would you describe the nice stuff?
>>21748892>Any love for Darjeeling?I've enjoyed what I've had, certainly, even if it's been relatively cheap stuff. It's just difficult returning to western brewing after picking up gongfu. Darjeeling was actually the first "real" tea I ever went out of my way to get, escaping grocery store tea. (Not the first time a blonde 2d girl inspired me to try new tea, funnily enough. I'll go put on a pot for old times' sake.)
>>21748892I don't like darjeeling desu. too lightly oxidized for my tastes in black tea. I like them chocolaty and honeyed
evens and i get naka big trees, odds and i get mohei + TFLZ
I'm drinking some cheap Genmaicha that I got from eBay.Tastes like seaweed and breakfast cereal.
I'm fucking tired of oolong lottery. I want light oolong, vendor's description says it's light oolong, nice light brew and green leaves on the pics, buy it, it's fucking overly oxidized brown shit.
>>21749240Can't say I relate to that problem. Where are you buying from?
>>21749240I really liked eco-cha's high mountain oolongs if you're after something more greenthough I've also learned to appreciate a heavy roast over time desu
>>21748892I quite enjoy a bit of Darjeeling, though I don't really go deeper for it than Twinings, but their Two Seasons is a great spring/summer tea for enjoying outdoors when the weather warms up.
>The bag is made of pure cotton and feels great to the touch. You can use it as a handkerchief, to shed tears of joy after your first sessions, or in a couple of months when you check your bank account and reflect on your life choices. kek the farmerleaf guy always cracks me up
how do I a sencha?80-90°C or do I need to go lower?
>>21737080
>>2174952370-80 would be typical. you can increase the temperature on the third brew and any later ones
>Want some Golden Monkey>Black Friday discounts are shit onlineDo I just wait for Boxing Day deals?
Vietsun is 15 percent off site wideI'm still working off my sampler but God that black tea was so good I might just have to place a fat order now, 15 dollar shipping be damned
>>21749781I've only been seriously drinking tea for about two years but in that time I've never really seen sales worth waiting for. Maybe the w2t drops but I've never been on one of those before it sells out. I just took the 15% off loose leaf from YS and got myself some oolongs and blacks. Thought about doing KTM but the shipping still seemed really high, I'm hoping for this tariff mess to settle soon hopefully. I dunno I'll probably get from them or awazon in a couple months when I need puer
>>21749799It really depends, best sale I've seen was a store in my local mall shutting down near the start of the coof and I got 4 samplers, a pound of Monk's Blend, and some novelty mugs and other junk at 85% off. Last big discount was Boxing Day 2 years ago when I bought 2 pounds (1 of golden monkey 1 of English breakfast) at 65% off from some company called Citizen Tea. Never gone fancier than loose black tea though since I know what I like.
>First time in all my years of drinking tea that I ever carelessly lifted a filled gaiwan and spilled it on myselfForgot I already filled it and was distracted. Thick shou to the arm and thigh. Use aloe vera, still burns; keep mindful anons! I'm lucky my gaiwan didn't break at least.
>>21749813Beggin ya to venture into dark oolongs anon. Dong ding or ro gui or da hong pao or a traditionally roasted TGY. I drink a lot of golden monkey style black tea as well but those are my favs that I've found. Imo avoid the fluorescent green type TGY and similar offerings, those are everywhere but don't do it for me
>>21749844For me its zoning out and forgetting I have the gaiwan brewing, remembering, lifting it up and the plate sticks to the bottom and I only notice once I start to pour and it falls on the cup. Lost a few good men that way
Any expectations for the Xiaguan Five Great Vajiras set? I couldn't find any reviews online so I just blinded a set since it's just $16/cake - and now it's almost sold out
>>21749877I don't know about that year, but it's hard to go wrong with Xiaguan if you like trad factory flavors and that cost/cake is solid. I wish I just bought from Quiche instead of W2T, damn it.
>>21749849There needs to be a term for that. A verb.
I'm something of a tea enthusiast myself
>>21749590tastes like chlorophyl and squid. this might be super low grade sencha though.
>started getting into tea as a replacement for alcoholism>I drink a lot, like 2-5 cups per day>Got Taylor's brand loose leaf, started expanding into other brands from there>like trying different kinds of teas from different regions and countries, love variety, love different herbal infusions>Never had a tea cake>Never had any actual chinese import>want to get into it somewhat, and also Japanese Matcha but the ritual and prep and proper brewing processes intimidate and terrify meTea anons, I come to you as a beginner. Teach me. How do I fully appreciate the culture of tea?
>>21749877damn, that's really good. would definitely shoot that if I wasnt broke.
Recommend me some Mariage Freres teas to try out (other than Marco Polo.)
>>21749977Check out the vendors in the rentry, get some samples of whatever sounds interesting (or you can ask for some recs here and probably someone knows something good)After that keep on sipping, no need to overthink things.
>>21749983Do you want a kind of tea in particular? I like the collection of japanese smoked tea they have. Did you try the oolong version of the marco polo?
>>21749977>Teach me. How do I fully appreciate the culture of tea?Honestly, relaxing and not over-complicating it is the first step. It's easy to mystify it, but at it's core, it's largely just chilling while infusing dried Asian leaves. If you're stressing about it, I'd argue you're depriving yourself of the full experience.>Never had any actual chinese import>want to get into it somewhatSimplest setup imo for Chinese pu'er/heicha is to get a few decent factory cakes or bricks from well-known producers and a cheap porcelain gaiwan if you don't already have one. I haven't purchased from them, but I've seen anons here repping QuicheTeas, and the prices seem competitive. If you want to buy from them, grab some decently aged Xiaguan and/or Dayi stuff from them, and you'll have a good time.>and also Japanese MatchaIt's up to you, but you might consider branching out to maccha when you've gotten comfortable with the other category first. Or you can just dive in, you do you. I just personally think it's more chill and valuable to spend time getting accustomed to each type of tea at your own pace rather than trying a bunch of stuff aimlessly at once. I think it helps you develop more awareness and appreciation for each type you come across.
>>21749796>that black tea was so good I might just have to place a fat order nowWhich one?Anything else impressed you? I'm this anon>>21748520>>21748553I wonder how the situation is in china, if the prices will remain low/get even lower. I'm still not getting big tree version of these cakes anytime soon. >>21749429Made me giggle as well.
>>21748055>which means they are still too expensive. The w2t shills recoil in pain at the superior gook.
>>21749977>want to get into it somewhat, and also Japanese Matcha but the ritual and prep and proper brewing processes intimidate and terrify memany even fancy teas are very flexible when it comes to brewing and brew up well just with a cup and hot water. it's called grandpa style brewingworks great for taiwanese oolong, chinese green tea, ripe pu-erh and many others
>>21750020I want some nice black teas. I have not. I didn't think Mariage Frere's was known for having good green teas. Particularly, I am looking for some recommendations of what would be considered their other "hallmark" teas.
>>21748055Honestly, I always compare prices with regards to soda cans as that used to be my drink of choice.Which is why I don't even scoff at prices until 0,40 USD/gram. Yeah, soda is expensive, and tea is dirt cheap.
>>21749977Unironically w2t's club is probably a good place to start for the world of boutique chinese teas. If they're following their usual schedule within the next few months you'll probably get a pick and a full cake of ripe, some raw samples, some oolong and blacks, some fresh greens, and then another full cake of green hype towards the summer. You can check out oolong owls old posts to see what they usually drop.https://oolongowl.com/category/tea-reviews/white-2-tea/
>>21749977https://farmerleaf.com/products/sample-packLots a good tea at reasonable price. Gotta have gaiwan tho, you can get the cheapest on ali, doesn't matter.
>>21748920The first flushes are typically low oxydation, crazy aromatic, with a green pit fruit flavor, like unripe peaches or almonds if you ever had those, or preshly picked olives. The Second flushes typically have the renowned "muscatel" flavor and are darker and maltier, but still juicy.>>21748929You can brew Darjeeling gongfu style with no issue. That's the way I drink them.>>21748970You might enjoy a nice Second Flush :D
