Bought an air fryer, mostly to cook smaller portions of dishes I already make in the oven, and to maybe reheat stuff better than a microwave I guess.
Is there anything else specific they're actually good at? It's hard to tell what's marketing and what's real.
Do you own one, /ck/? What do you use it for?

Air frying victing here.
Whatever you do DO NOT BAKE homemade lasagna in there. I've just finished baking this and it's horrid. Tastes like pasta. The sauces and the meat can't be felt at all. Don't waste time and nerves on air fryer lasagna. Never.

I cook stuff in an air fryer all the time after /ck/ advised me too (I'm too poor to afford a kitchen and an oven). It werks.
Haven't figured out how to do custard though.
Pies, cookies, meat, potatoes all work
>>
>>21748376
oh yeah cookies are nice idea, my oven is kinda fucked so last time I tried them half the tray got burned while other was underbaked

Why not just cook a full load of food in the oven and put the rest in the fridge/freezer to eat over the next two weeks?
>>
>>21748465
leftovers never taste as good as fresh made food(well depending on what you're cooking), plus you could theoretically have more variety even if I'm just going to make the same stuff every day anyway
>>
>>21748342
Why don't you fry a whole turkey heh

Im still kinda new to using mine and I keep incorrectly estimating how long to put frozen slop in it. Also gotta clean it often especially if theres oil or grease cause that shit gets hot and can smoke in a way where my toaster oven didnt. I really havnt cooked much in it except fries, tendies, hot pocket, brussel sprouts, and hash browns. I still havnt tried actually cooking something real like breaded chicken cutlets or anything. I have a lot of anxiety if I cook with it cause im afraid to burn stuff. But I know it should be fine if i keep it clean
>>
Got some cheap one on sale recently because have old oven and seems a bit wasteful to warm it up unless making huge food. Allegedly these take less electricity and are faster but I do not know if it's true until more testing.
Anyway have not had time/chance to try much yet. Mainly bumping thread I guess out of interest
>>
They're good for frozen slop, chicken thighs, broccoli. I don't use it for anything else. But it makes good chicken thighs, which makes it worth it for me. I can eat chicken thighs every day.
>>

OP here, I got it in today, and I'm kinda impressed, it basically requires no preheat, you turn it on, it comes to temp within like a minute and then it's full blast. Has to be more efficient since the cooking chamber is tiny. Cooks way faster than my oven at what should be equivalent temperature(but my oven is also an old piece of shit with no fan).
>>21750266
it does seem easy to burn stuff but I got the one in the OP pic which has the glass container so I can actually see what's going on, very convenient and super easy to clean.
>>
>>21750811
>very convenient and super easy to clean.
It does look very convenient compared to more "traditional" looking airfryers.
Got some big fucker because friend said that bigger surface area is better and that one happened to be on sale for a price that I was willing to pay for an airfryer. But can already see the basket will be annoying to clean due to the size.
But it does make sense that more surface area is better because you don't need to put things on top of things that much

Anyone have experience with cheap chinese brands? There's one on sale at a local store that I can fully pay with points right now. Specs are 4L, 1400W, 200C/390F. I'm thinking it might break in a few months but if I can get a lot of uses out of it within that time, and it turns out airfrying is for me, then i'll buy something high-end. Is it worth it?
>>
>>21748342
Dos:
Use on all fried frozen food
Use on potatoes
Use on veggies to roast them
Use on meats to get a good crust

Don'ts:
Bake - it is NOT an oven, it will burn stuff (except where you have a "bake" option)
Use on anything you want to stay moist
Use on pasta
Use for other "microwave" tasks like warming water or fluids
>>
>>21748342
I was skeptical of air fryers at first but goddamn I love it. It just heats so evenly
>>
Wtf theres a glass one?
>>
it is true that people don't clean their air fryers? I gave away mine because of how fucking bothersome was cleaning it every time I finished cooking something.

>>21753513

American hands typed this.

>>21749053
I love cooking extra chicken on my charcoal grill, the flavor the next day is amazing.
>>
>>21748342
cool design imo, just a unit you can attach to the top of a pyrex bowl
>>
>>21748342
Air fryers are for heating frozen foods as a poor substitute to deep frying. This is done as cope by fat lazy retards who get health information from people selling them things. Meanwhile their avoidance of oils leaves them lacking nutrients and unsatiated so they eat more.
>>
>>21753861
the bowl the food sits in? I don't see how you could not clean it every time without eventually burning down your house. The one I got is super easy to clean.
or the fan and heating element? I'm not sure how you could clean it at all without disassembling the machine and I have a feeling it will get nasty eventually from splattering oil and stuff
>>
>>21748342
I like it for fajitas
>>
after few days, the good
>cooks way faster than an oven
>crisps/caramelizes things on the outside without overcooking them on the inside
>can cook in a way that my fanless oven simply cannot
>way more convenient than an oven thanks to no preheating required
>the specific one I got is very easy to clean, about as easy as cleaning a regular pot or pan
the bad:
>makes cooking slop way too convenient
and I don't even mean frozen stuff(though it makes good frozen fries without having to bother with heating up the oil like with a regular deep fryer) but like, I can make crispy cheesy garlic bread in literally 5 minutes, and a ton of other snacks in general
that's way too much power for one man
>>
>>21748342
I strongly distrust the crispi because it's made out of glass, literally designed to break. But yes of course I own an air fryer it is the air fryer of kitchen appliances
>>21753861
my old one had a metal basket that let the crumbs through and every once in a while I'd take the heavy debris out but other than that negligible cleanin
my new one I keep moderately clean but even then you dont need to clean it that much
>>21754512
clearly, you don't own an air fryer

wouldn't a hair drier on high temp achieve the same result?

I still keep the other slice of air fried lasagna in the fridge. Fucking foul. One of the worst things I've ever baked. I am waiting for the slice to go bad so I can throw it in the trash.

>>
>>21748342
I bought an instant pot pro duo or whatever. It's a slow cooker and air fryer in one. I only use the air fryer function.

I also hate the basket style air fryers. I need to get a toaster oven style one so I can use normal square pans.
>>
>>21753733
>Is there anything else specific they're actually good at?
"Air fryer" is just a stupid marketing name. It's really a forced convection oven.

>>21753861
It really depends on what you cook in them. If you're reheating frozen fries there is very little cleaning to be done. If you're using them to roast chicken then that spatters everywhere and there's a lot of cleanup.

>>21757163
Yep. That's all it is, a heater and a fan.

Just got one of these.
So far done 3 "burn in" heat cycles, makes the kitchen smell like a fuckin lead works. If the smell doesn't clear up after another 3 cycles, this shit is going back and look into an entirely different brand.

>Air Fryers
Ah, so a convection oven for smoothbrains. Tell me, how do you manage to keep track of your food with your vastly diminished intellect so you don't burn it?
>>
what's the difference between these and toaster ovens? just seems they do the same job but with less room, more plastic, and less versatility
>>
>>21758319
>what's the difference between these and toaster ovens?
One is a useful multitool than can cook a variety of foods in a variety of ways. The other is a cheap marketing scheme bought into by unthinking retarded normies that can't do anything without an ad telling them to.
>>
>air fryer is actually a convection oven
Is the exact same kind of midwit redditor statement as
>a tomato is actually a fruit

You zoomers don't have a fucking chance. Ten years ago you didn't see people so dumb they thought foods were "memes" and didn't know what to trust. Even if you are that dumb, WHY would you ask us? Most of this community are just trolls even more retarded than yourself.
>>
>>21758319
The only real difference is forced air. Same thing that differentiates a regular oven from a convection oven. I got a fancy one that can also work as a hotplate and grill. IMO they're worth it, things just turn out good, especially vegetables.
>>
>>21748342
similar experience
bought air fryer, tried couple of things
bit worse results than oven/pan when cooking food
bit more cleanup than microwave when heating up food
used it twice a week maybe trying random things like crepes, since I bought it after all
did bit of moving around the kitchen, unplugged fryer, left on the floor until I'll need it next time
turns out I never needed it again, or ever in the first place
it just sucks
>>
>>21758319
they circulate air way better than a convection oven. there’s a vapor barrier around food even in traditional convection ovens. if you know anything about phase change cooling you’ll know that it sucks heat energy out of the air very quickly. air fryers move enough air to keep any water vapor at a minimum that’s why they crisp better than a convection oven, although it does help having the burner closer to the food also
>>
I do pretty much all proteins on mine and they all turn out pretty great. I can even get a good sear on beef without ruining the doneness.
They excel on chicken, tho. Everything chicken Airfryers do great.

Its not to be used as a replacement to an oven. In fact if you want something like an airfryer oven sized I believe they do make ovens with fans built in. The caveat here is the fan stimulates the dry environment equivalent to say a hair dryer. I think they are excellent for pizza and reheating fried food but beyond that your use may be very limited.

an air fryer works similarly to a convection oven but differently enough to be it's own thing

I don't care. I live in a basement with no kitchen and air fryers are portable too. It just werks on almost everything you's use and oven for.
