It typically gets cut into smaller slices or cubes that make it easy to pry off however much tea is wanted. You can then brew the tea however you like. Qian Liang Cha and related teas have a mellow, mulchy, woody taste profile reminiscent of dry autumn leaves.

Nice, how is it? I remember drinking a sample of that one too. Was weird...aroma was like whiffing BBQ chips. I mean, it was nice, but I'd almost like to just eat a steak with it.

Not sure I'd want a cake of the thing (maybe...), but it's good. I like it. I want to try their other smoked offerings--each one at least once--see if they all kind of taste the same, or if some are way better than others. I like smoked things. (Rauchbier etc.)

After anon suggested the Georgian produced black tea last thread heres what thats like.
Georgian OP Maghali Etseri Mountain - 8g gong fu.

Wet leaf smell is very unique for a black tea, strong roast aroma with some damp dried fruit but the roast smell does not translate into the taste. Gives me some faint grape/plum taste but it is not as fruity as most Chinese black teas. Advertised as being chocolaty which I'm not really getting. This tea is overall very mild, not astringent at all and goes in the direction of an inoffensive Keemun. Later steeps get quite sweet. I'm still a bit sick so my taste might be slightly out of tune. Quite an unusual black tea for sure but I have to do more trails with more intense brewing.
>>
>>21764861
yeah that tracks with the one I had. mild and fruity, not chocolaty, needs to be pushed more than most other black teas
>>
Drinking some "Wild biluochun" from iteaworld today
Looks like a fuzzy tippy green tea. Very sweet tasting with a green bean flavor. Brothy mouth feel with mild bitterness and astringency, and a "fresh" lightly drying finish. Still tastes fine despite the fact I bought it last year. Quite good overall, it reminds me I need to drink green tea more often. I tend to allocate to much of my tea budget to hording heicha. Going to try to branch out this next year.

iteaworld is a newer vendor that gained some popularity a few years back by having a bunch of highly discounted promotional sampler deals that I sadly missed out on. As far as I know they don't do them anymore. I bought their wild tea sampler last year mostly to taste the included Qujiang Thin Slice Tea. Otherwise I have not tried their other teas. The shop looks fine barring the prices being a bit high, some of that probably goes into the tins and fancy packaging. I like that they have a few hard to find types of heicha and some interesting herbal teas. I am sure I can get them off of Taobao for less but it is nice to have a convenient option. The biggest thing I dislike is that their sample bags are only 5g and the free ones a measly 3.5g which is too small for my tastes. Despite that sometime I will probably put in a bigger order with them.

5g servings is honestly not half bad for a green tea. The softer brewing sometimes favors them. I am just used to pushing tea hard.

Round 2
Wild dancong from iteaworld
Looks like a mid to high oxidation oolong with long intact leaves. Smells lightly fruity dry and roasted roasted and fruity (lychee?) wet. Taste is lightly roasty with a complex mix of floral and fruity notes. Dry mouthfeel, moderate to high bitterness, moderate astringency, with a tingly floral perfumy finish. I don't drink much dancong but this one seems about average for the midrange, not overly bitter and under flavored like some of the really cheap stuff but also not as amazingly complex as the top shelf examples.

not everything has to be a sugar blast anon. plus with that kind of tea you're feeling for things like texture, how it coats the mouth, any cooling effect, whether it gives a prickly sensation or dry sensation, if there's bitterness, does it go away, do you get a nice lingering aftertaste, etc on top of just the initial flavor. if you just want basic water with flat sweet flavor then the peach tea bags at the store are just fine
>>
>>21765476
Not him and I'm not going to throw too much shit your way but when you describe your drink as steeping water in yard debris then it doesn't surprise me when someone makes fun of you.
>>
>>21765494

>>
>>21764824
I am not buying from any Chinese vendor directly because of long shipping times and tariffs.
>>21764830
2025 or 2024? The latest 2025 oolong pack is only 10$ more expensive than the uncommon varietal pack.
>>
>>21765581
Either year should be fine. Some would even say yancha is better after it has had a year or two of rest to allow the roasted flavor to settle down. Common vs uncommon pack is up to you. Do you want to try popular varieties or do you just want yancha?
>>
>>21765605

Then go for the one of the 2023/2024/2025 "Oolong Sample" and maybe something else small to hit the $50 free shipping threshold. That's what I would do. I have never heard anything bad about oldwaystea and am personally planing to pick up one of each of their samplers sometime. The only thing that has stopped me so far is being too cheap for good yancha.

Does anyone know of a supplier for the tea used by Reza's Restaurant (Chicago area restaurant chain)? It is sort of an Earl Gray but with a much richer flavor than any Earl Gray I've ever had.

iteaworld sampling day 2, round 1

"Wild gongmei"
Looks like a white peony, leaves mostly green with some browning, the leaves are fine and mostly intact, you could probably get away with selling it as a Bai Mudan. Dry leaf aroma has a perfumy sweetness to it, wet brings out some vegetable notes as well. Tea liquor is light yellow. Taste is a blend of tannic dry leaves, raw sugar, floral notes, and a bit of vegetable. Low bitterness and astringency with a tingly drying finish and sweet floral exhale. Overall seems like a good tea. I quite like finer grade, greener white teas even if I don't buy them often.
>>
Did you cry when you found out that green tea and black tea are made with the same leaves? (I did)
>>
I tried "She Graduates" last night--the free sample I got in my w2t order.
I'd heard tell of "cooling" teas, but wasn't exactly sure what that meant, but this one was definitely cooling. All-in-all, pleasant if a little too subtle for me. No bitterness and subdued in taste and aroma. It did make me feel good though.

iteaworld sampling day 2, round 2
"Wild gongfu black tea"
Leaves are finely twisted spindly strips, mostly intact and good quality looking. Dry leaf aroma fruity and a bit malty, wet leaf reveals more of the maltiness. Tea liquor is a dark orange. Taste is malty and creamy with fruity undercurrents. Mild bitterness and astringency with a smooth mouthfeel and salivating finish. Again seems like a good tea, no complaints from me on the quality front.

Conclusion: I still think iteaworld is somewhat overpriced especially when not on sale, but all 5 teas I bought from them were good quality. Not my top pick but worth a casual recommendation if you see something you are interested in. The fancy packaging tins would probably make them good for giving as gifts. Still I personally lean into the price per quality min-maxing camp and I suspect you can beat them elsewhere. Also as a marked up beginner friendly store where you pay for presentation I would like to see better tasting notes. They are helpful for learning even if you don't think they 100% correct. Building tea vocabulary is hard and for a lot of types of teas if I had to write notes on similar but different tea I would struggle to describe the difference. For example if I reviewed dancongs all the time I would ideally need to get better at describing specific floral notes instead of just saying "floral".

Obviously I remineralize it. And pure distilled water would still be the heck of a lot better than the 208mg/l calcium muck that is coming out my tap.

About 15% tap water to get to a comfy 30mg/l calcium

Nothing wrong with my tap water, except the hideous amounts of calcium in it. It does a chemical reaction with the tea visible with bare eye (and taste), pic rel. There have been papers published on this reaction, interesting stuff. If I deal with that, I don't taste a difference to bottled dedicated tea water the method is fine for me.
>Did you test your tap water?
No, I can look the contents up on the website of the water plant which supplies my district.
>>
>>21769187
I've noted with my brita filter removes this scum stuff. The TDS only drops a little though.
One of these days I'll get around to trying remineralised distilled, the bottled water around here tastes basically the same as my filtered tap.
>>
>>21769289
>with my brita filter
I've done a lot of experimenting with britas but I found the filter saturates too fast on calcium, at least with my tap water. Its good when the filter is really new but as the filter reaches half his life the tea gets messy already. Britas might also introduce new germs, als the filter is permanently wet. You're supposed to store the brita in the fridge because of that but few people do so.
>>
>>21769300
>You're supposed to store the brita in the fridge because of that but few people do so
I've always stored my Britas in the fridge...
>>
>>21769300
Is the scum a good proxy for high water calcium content? There must be some remaining, if I boil it a bunch of times it can precipitate out and cloud the water slightly. No scum though.
Tea taste good at least, places with very hard water have it tough.

There's kettle threads every now and then on here, and I'm happy with mine, but I've never seen thermoses get discussed. I only have 20+ year old hand-me-downs, they all leech an ugly taste into the water. Any suggestions for good brands / models, with capacities at or over 1 litre / 32 fl. oz?
>>
>>21771185
Thermos is the brand. They make some that are vacuum insulated, which makes for tremendous heat insulation. I used to make a french press in the morning and have piping hot coffee all the way until 3, 4pm. It was great. Find a size you like and go for it. I have one dedicated for coffee and one for water.
>>
>>21771191
Looking at their site now, what's funny is I have a lot of old Thermos brand bottles at home, and they've lost so much charm over the years. No bold red and blue dots or checks, and the logo looks like it doesn't want to be there, it's acutally a little sad. Ya get plain black, matte metal, or pastel. They have this amazing legacy and history, and throw it all away to appeal to the "contemporary market". I'll remember your recommendation in any case, anon.

Zojirushis are great, but using mine to hold hot tea caused it to become stained, permanently aromatic, and imparting of flavors. These days, I only put water in thermos bottles, and the Zojirushis aren't that big, making them less than ideal.

I actually like the Classic Stanley for it's size. Its bottle stopper thing, allows you to pour without really exposing the contents to the open air making it cool a lot slower too.

I ended up getting a '22 v93, a '22 7562 brick, a 2014 Xiaofa tuo, and the 2005 Tulin Phoenix raw tuo, coming out to $40. Gotta say I'm looking forward to it, that Tulin tuo has my interest piqued. I wonder if anyone here's had it yet?

That comes from a reaction triggered by too high calcium content of the water, see

You need to find low calcium water (<35mg/l) and you're fine.
Ice tea is literally cold black tea with some lemonjuice and sugar added.

W2T's shous have been kind of mid or cruddy for me so far. I have to re-do my personal notes for Bonesy because I was unknowingly sick when I tried it, but Gossamer is such a bait and switch imo. Not even worth posting my notes. It had nice wet leaf aromas, but was otherwise the essence of

Even the wet leaf aromas faded out after a few infusions. I am grateful to be in the position to have tea in the first place, but I regret not buying from QuicheTeas after seeing everyone get all the nice aged stuff. im having a problem with some cheapish ceylon I bought for drinking with milk and making ice tea where when if I let it sit for more than 8 hours in the fridge it goes light in colour cloudy like someone has added a small amount of milk.

>I regret not buying from QuicheTeas after seeing everyone get all the nice aged stuff
Aged material isn't always better as young material by definition. So far I'm happier with the Shulloween cakes than my experiences with factory ripe so far. Also Quiche is so cheap you can get bags there aswell and see its really closer to the experience you're aiming for.

>>21773123
I'm aware that it isn't always so simple as "more age = better", but I often like aged factory pu'er and heicha. They have a lot of good-looking yet inexpensive Xiaguan stuff too. That said, maybe the cakes are faring better than the material used for the small batch minis in some cases. Not everything has been bad; most are serviceable, but a few have been really, really dull/stale, borderline "I discern nothing". I'd get more of a sensory experience from my old cancerous Fullchea mini tuos by comparison, even if an arguably bad one.

might just be some chemicals in the tea precipitating out as it cools, ones that might dissolve easily in hot water but crash out in cool. if its been in the fridge it shouldn't be growth but i used to make sun tea with oolong in my car during summer while at work and it would bubble like it was beer fermentation, gave me terrible stomach cramps for a few months before i realised what an idiot i am and stopped. i'd recommend against cold brewing tea in general unless you do it in the fridge an even then
>>
>>21773320
it does it not in the fridge too but its pretty cold in my kitchen.
i cant think of any chemical that would naturally occur in tea that crashes out of solution when at lower temps so shouldnt be that unless theres something added to it in which case id rather not drink it.
it tastes totally fine when hot tho so im not sure what to think.
maybe ill get it tested or something but by that point i may as well buy different tea as it was very cheap.

>my oxo is going bad and causing my desk lamp to flicker
An electric kettle is just a resistive load to the grid so there should be no way it interfers with your desk lamp. Since a kettle is a high power device it could visibly dim your light during the heating phase in case you have shitty wirering in your house due to a significant voltage drop. But that would happen with every other kettle aswell. Hook it up to a different fuse loop.
With my kettle I also see a slight light dimming when its on but I couldn't care less.
>>
>>21774155
>>21773177
Weirdly, my kettle does something similar. It's plugged into my desk, which has a built in power outlet. It'll straight up cause the power outlet to turn off. I have no idea why it causes it to do that. I think I'll have to plug it into its own outlet. But the cord is too damn short.
This is the one I have: https://www.oxo.com/shop/coffee-beverage/coffee-beverage/tea-kettles/adjustable-temperature-kettle.html
>>
>>21774167
>It's plugged into my desk, which has a built in power outlet. It'll straight up cause the power outlet to turn off.
Thats obvious. The internal power wiring of your desk is not desigend to handle such high power appliances, especially now when it has some switching in it. Plug the kettle in a separate socket.

I'm using a Corvo at this very moment!
The Stag is the gooseneck version I believe? I've tried that one too. I prefer the Corvo. It doesn't really limit your pouring control, once you get used to it, and does let you go fast, unlike the Stag. Both are good though, if a little expensive. Best feature is how it will keep your water at the desired temperature. No need to re-boil water constantly.

Also, if you guys are interested in non-gooseneck kettles, I have this one: https://www.oxo.com/adjustable-temperature-kettle.html
It goes down to 104F so it's great for Japanese green teas that need a lot of precision. So far, it is very easy to use, and I haven't had any problems with it. The pour is slow and great for gong-fu.
>>
>>21774185

What kind of tea is that? I looks more like a golden flower (Eurotium cristatum) inoculated liu bao in a nontraditional (for liu bao) basket than a typical anhua heicha to me. You can see how the tea splits on its own, if it were a qian liang you would need a saw to cut it. The wicker also looks fresh so it is not likely that old. My guess is this is some sort of experimental/nontraditional batch.
>>
>>21775248
looks like Qian Liang Cha, i had a bit of a cross section and it did break apart easily, maybe they're packed down in sections as those sections are quite thick
>>
>>21775248
I was thinking about that too. I believe the pale dust is remnant from the bamboo wrapping. It seems to disintegrate over time, revealed when it's cut or hacked open. Golden flower tends to grow mostly or entirely inside of a log rather than on the outside. Only a guess.
>>
>>21775057
So what's the diagnosis?
>>
>>21775260
>looks like Qian Liang Cha, i had a bit of a cross section and it did break apart easily,
I have too, It is easy to split along the grain (top and bottom of a slice, the opposite of a puerh cake) but I would expect it to not break up so easily on the strong axis. However, I don't have a full log (yet) to test. it looks too loose too. The wraping is also odd for qian liang, I don't see the expected layers of bamboo leaves.
>maybe they're packed down in sections as those sections are quite thick
Possible, but I thought they roll and compress the "X liang" teas from the side, not the top and bottom. I don't see how putting the maocha in the basket would lead to such pronounced seams.

>>21775263
>I believe the pale dust is remnant from the bamboo wrapping.
Also possible but I have never seen that much bamboo dust and the basket does not look like it is that degraded. The one exception I know of being stuffed bamboo stems where bamboo pulp ends up on the outside of the tea but this is too big for that.

>>21775287

Brewed using 2g tea leaves 280 ml of boiling water.
Honestly it's kind of mid.
What am I doing wrong?
>>
>>21777580
Use more tea/less water. I'd recommend 7g and 100ml boiling water

Any ideas how I would determine the rating for a required cord?
>>
It has now been two weeks and my order apparently hasn't even left Taiwan. Death Stranding style foot delivery would actually be faster at this point.
>>

Whats the advantage of going through all the extra steps if I can just brew it in a pot?

>>21777595
That would be 10x the leaf water ratio. Anon obviously wasn't brewing gong fu
>>
>>21777580
You might be brewing it quite weak. You can brew ripe puerh until it's black like coffee and thick, it doesn't really get bitter
>>
>>21777642
Taste try it, but blend your black tea fine like you would coffee.

Some countries had to pay customs fees already, but it's getting more expensive starting next month, just another tax. They talk about fraud or protection for consumers it's an absolute joke. Same as fair competition the shops buys the same shit from asia and sell it at high price. But because it's a shop the government get more taxes on them so it's fine.

Hmm where did I hear that before?
Also literally no chink packages are duty free, I pay import tax+bs "handling" fee on literally every order unless seller is particularly crafty.
Since I have to show the receipt, not even declaring lower value works.
>>
>>21769187
Is that really a problem with the water? I feel like I get a lot less scum if I rinse my leaves with cold water first.
I also get get it more with some teas VS others. Lot of scum with yunnan gold, much less with keemun. Basically none with green teas.
>>
>hot herbal tea is good
>cold black tea is bad
explain
>>
>>21778443
Herbs have naturally soft stems, and die back entirely in winter, so they're attuned to hot consumption. Meanwhile the woody stems of Camellias produce a high dose of tannings that distributes unevenly in cold water.

I do this with rooibos sometimes and it works great because it catches all of the super fine bits. Chamomile too. I think I've tried it with CTC but it wasn't superior to just using an infuser. Some Ceylon dust might do OK.

Woe! I found mold while organizing my pumidor. My aged dayi 7572 grew mold spots and the aged white label shou in with it also grew a couple. Both of which were good and kind of expensive teas. The dayi is at least replaceable the but the 90s white label shou, not so much. About a year and a half back I also had mold in my other shou mylar. Hindsight 20/20 I should have removed the boveda from the mylar with old shou but at the time I figured it was something with the young shou itself that made it mold since the rest of my collection was fine and I had never had issues before.

Worse still this time I had a irreplaceable unique camphor heavy late 90's sheng cake in in a separate mylar sprouted mold. I am really tempted to try to chip off the bad spots and save the cake because it was a favorite of mine. I don't want to give my self mycotoxin poising but perhaps shou and wet storied teas have enough of them that a little more won't make a difference?

Thankfully all the teas in my other 16 or so mylar bags were fine. The mold was whitish and fluffy in case anyone wants to know.

I use 65% boveda packs in Mylar bags that are stored in coolers to keep the temp stable. On paper it should be safe storage parameters but apparently it is not. The shou in particular seems vulnerable. I didn't use to have problems for years in the past so I am not sure why it is a problem now. Perhaps it is because I did not open my bags enough anymore?

Having a hard time deciding what I should do. Should I pull out all my bovedas? Should I plan to buy lower %rh bovedas i the future? Should I try to salvage any of the affected teas? This whole scenario sucks an I am thoroughly pissed about it.

Anyone else here ever have problems with mold in their heicha storage?
>>
>>21778993
Damn that is sad to hear about your cakes anon. Guess I'll drop mine to 60%.
I can't help much but I've had my suspicions about environments where air doesn't flow. Localised pockets of higher-than-ambient humidity seem to be a real phenomenon and under natural storage airflow would keep things "stirred". Just speculation on my part.
>>
>>21778993
My condolences.

I just checked my containers, and one of them is exceeding the Boveda number. Kinda spooky. Personally, I wouldn't go above the 62% packs. Anything beyond that, and you approach the danger zone.
>>
>>21779119
For what it's worth, your humidity meter probably has error of at least 2%pt. So it's within measurement tolerances.

Should I even bother getting boveda packs and small tubs for my pu'erh? My room humidity typically varies between 55% and 70%. I also live in a rather humid area.
>>
>>21781263
A little tub protects the tea from outside aromas.
Also, the tea aromas in the tub mingle creating a unique smell that can be very pleasant.

There are advantages beyond humidity control.
>>
>>21781272
Does that really matter if I keep the teas in a drawer in my bedroom (my tea station is in my bedroom) where there are no harsh smells?
>>
>>21781277
A little tub will protect against insects as well.

All kidding aside, I suppose you should take "burn rate" into account. If you consume your teas days or months after getting them, instead of years, the greater control afforded by the tub becomes a lot less important.
>>
>>21781300
I consume my teas here and there. I have a session a day during my vacations.
I do not think that the risk of insects is high because I do not bring food into my bedroom and have protectors on my window.
I will keep it in mind, though. Do you have any specifically recommended tubs that have a neutral smell?
>>
I am turning Japanese bros; I really think so. I'm basically just drinking sencha daily. It's nearly perfect. Idgi. Maybe the Japs are right.

Cambro containers come highly recommended, but are expensive. Restaurants use them to store food.

are the tibetan yak butter meme bricks any good?
I don't want to blow $40 on a lark, for some terrible crap which would take me years to drink even if I wanted to. its at least good enough, right? I won't get the kung flu or some shit?
I've never bought tea online or in bulk before, pls help.
>>
>>21781638
If you haven't had xiaguan tea before I wouldn't recommend getting 2.5kgs off the bat, seems lots of people aren't into it.
It's essentially a rougher version of ordinary cheap xiaguan tuos (smoke, some bitter, some astringency)
If you tried them, you'll know if you might like this tea or not. I think they're pretty good, but I have old man taste. Milk tea style does smooth things out.
>>
>>21781638
I really enjoy it. Had several years of it from a few different sellers. 2013 is sipping pretty good right now.

>I've never bought tea online or in bulk before, pls help.
Also just adding, it was my first online bulk purchase from china. Think I paid $22 shipped for 1.25kg of 2017 from kingteamall years ago. You could also just try a single stack of the current year for $9.99+shipping from them.

maybe I'll consider the sample or >>21781672. gotta look some more.
shipping prices are pretty rough too.
I dunno. I'll probably just get something cheap from the local shop in the meantime. pretty strapped for cash anyways.
