How did the idea of salad tossing originate? How long have people been tossing salad?

well, ancient greeks and romans already ate salad almost as we know it today
>leafy greens tossed with olive oil, wine vinegar and salt
other ingredients were honey, garum, imported spices, saltpeter, cheese etc.

one thing to keep in mind
lettuce wasn't really that common
it was mostly mixed mint, coriander, parsley, rue and other local herbs

greek Horiatiki is also pretty old
but not sure if that counted as salad in ancient times
was more like a peasant food

hope that answers your question
