You need it for your thyroid to function properly. You can easily get iodine from any type of seafood.

Trace element but important for some thyroid hormones. Very important, those hormones are basically essential.
But becuase of the very specific use only minimal amount of iodine required, hence the miniscule amount you take with iodated salt can be enough.
Seafood is a common way, otherwise the mentioned iodated salt.

Moderately important to extremely important. It depends on what your goals are.

In terms of bioavailability:
Eggs (read nutrition labels) > Seaweed > iodised salt for moderade/continued use.
Dr. Lugol's iodine + sea salt (which lacks iodine) if you believe you have an Iodine deficiency.

Do not take it excessively.

Elemental iodine is a watchlisted substance in the US, but it is easily prepared from readily available iodine salts.

Literally nobody eats elemental iodine. It's a foul dangerous substance (that sublimes straight from solid to vapour) but not as bad a bromine, chlorine or fluorine.
Unless you've got thyroid problems, you probably don't need to go looking for iodide salts.
