On my vacation, I went to my parents house and my Dad made some beef liver for dinner. I thought that it would taste bad because it's so maligned in popular culture for some reason, but it just tasted like dark turkey meat to me. He put some bacon, yellow mustard, and onions caramelized in bacon grease on it and it was really good. Do you guys really think that liver tastes bad? Also, post other foods unfairly labelled as "Gross".
>>
i find it tastes ok, nothing special, but the texture is awful when it's not cooked right. it's like... sandy? gritty? i don't really know how to describe it, but it's not pleasant.

not a chance anyone who enjoys liver is younger than 100.
but anyways it seems like half of all people hate mushrooms which is sad to me because I think they’re pretty bitchin.
>>
>>21817035
Mushrooms from the store are bland. Canned mushrooms are slimy. Wild mushrooms or homegrown (oysters, lions mane, etc) are amazing
>>
>>21817035
I forgot to say this, but when my dad was a kid and it was liver night, all 3 of his other siblings groaned because they hated it. He was the only one that liked liver.
Also, canned mushrooms are ass, but fresh ones are just OK. Really, I think that mushrooms are the opposite of the whole "Culturally gross" thing. I constantly see mushroom-related stuff shilled everywhere and they just aren't all that.

Your dad never forced you to try liver growing up? If so that’s very nice of him.

On the other side I get pretty grossed out as an adult about pre-ground or blended food, like peanut butter or apple sauce - the producer doesn’t really care if some of the stuff has bugs or is rotten because it’ll get ground up and the consumer won’t notice.

Pig head. The ears, snout, meat, skin are all delicious.
>>
>>21817030
Japanese liver and leeks is delicious. You need sweet sake to remove the iron taste and soy, ginger, garlic, leek, sesame oil to flavour the dish.

>>21817030
no it's great
americans are weird

>it just tasted like dark turkey meat to me.
proof right there that you are a tastelet. someone with no ability to taste or smell.

liver taste like cooked blood and rust. plus a strong nasty flavor that is like nothing else. yes all liver. no matter how it was made. yes I tried it that way, and that way, and that other way. ALL the ways. it still taste vile.

>hey I like this thing

Liver on restaurant menus used to "calve's liver" made from baby cows, aka veal. When the food police discovered that baby cows were kept in inhumane conditions and forced to have diarrhea for only allowed mother's milk....veal became enemy #1.

Long story short, veal was once lightly flavored from a young cow, and now, an organ that filters blood is from an old ass ready for market cow that has had antibiotics and who knows what else. It not only tastes strong but could be more dangerous for your health.

So, no, I'll stick to chicken liver, an animal that lives only 6 weeks before ready to market, because I always actually liked liver flavor.
>>
I love liver, I eat it almost every week.

I fucking love raw oysters. Good ones taste briny, a little sweet, and when you add some kind of acid are surprisingly refreshing. I've lived in New England my whole life so I guess I've never had the displeasure of having bad or old oysters but I find most people who are squeamish about them have never actually tried them.
>>
>>21817030
Liver's strong. That's all. That's the whole reason people don't like it. See also anchovies, oysters, etc. People will say stupid shit but no, that's all it is other than personal preference. I don't think liver tastes bad at all, but a full main dish of liver would not be my first choice.

>it just tasted like dark turkey meat to me
This is bizarre though

didnt care for "normal" liver as a kid, but loved moose liver. it doesn't have the usual texture and the flavour is a lot better too. wish I still had a way to source it.

Cow head/face
Cow intestines
Pigs feet
Chicken hearts
>>
>>21818714
Cow head/face is very nice if cooked slowly. Chicken hearts and pigs' feet are, well, OK I guess. I've never had cow intestines and I'm sceptical.

It’s a shame, organ meat like liver kidney and gizzards taste better than breasts or thighs but you can’t eat it everyday without nuking your own liver

When I was a kid my mother used to make the most bitter rubbery liver and onions ever and literally make me sit down at the table for hours trying trying to eat it, now I don't even go near offal. It's not even cheaper any more so why bother.
>>
>>21818470
just suck the shit from a monkeys ass anon. it's an acquired taste,
>>
>>21818924
>Offal? More like awful!

People just don't know how to cook
Liver is famously bad if you can't do it right (ex. Tastes like metal/blood and is chewey/bland and hard to shallow)
Is a shit test for taste AND skill
I couldn't cook right now cause I specifically know how I know where to get it right at diners and it's awesome
Ask for it very well done and fried both sides/chopped & fried
>>
I'm not american, so I can say I have had good, fresh liver, best tasting thing in the world, it is sweet from the glycogen (it is fresh, you see).
>>
>>21818654
Secret Is to slice the liver and soak it in a mildly alkaline liquid then roll it in a paper towel and gently squeeze out all moisture. Then you marinade it in soy and set cooking sake before gently stir frying.
>>
>>21819400
>bland and hard to shallow
Jesus, you need to find better liver. There's something very wrong if your liver is bland. You think it's awesome at diners probably because they aren't selling you whatever dogfood this is.

When I was a kid my mother would make the most grey dry overdone steaks I've ever seen in my life each bite of which I had to chew for minutes before I could swallow, now I just eat steaks rare because I am not a little baby still obsessed with what my mother made me eat.

Never had liver because I have bad memories from how terrible my dad cooks it but I enjoy me some liver pate,I can straight up eat it with a spoon but the absolutely best way to eat it is spread on slices of bread topped with some tomatoes and onion
