I got a new knife and cut myself on the heel as soon as I picked it up.

Why would knives need sharp pointy heels?

To cut with.

I use it to break through the crust on hard crusty bread which gives the blade something to bite into since I don't own a bread knife. The tip could work too but the heel gives better control. Ru a grill btw?

On good knives that part is made stronger than the mid/tip of the blade. It allows you to cut through harder things without damaging the knife.

Because they expect you to be capable of handling a knife.

Why would you step on a knife?
