I am attending culinary school this year to get my trade certification, any suggestions for how to make the most of it? Is it ok if I don't care for creativity and just want to focus on tradition? I am worried that they will grade me on whether I can innovate. What was your experience?
>culinary school>pic unrelated
my brother went to culinary school.he ended up getting a job at cheesecake factory.not even grilling steaks or making the cakes. he got stuck on the salad line.I guess what I'm saying is culinary school is a waste of time. There's plenty of michelin chefs who just got started as dishwashers and worked their way up.
>>21821288This, it doesn't hurt to have credentials but you'd have better luck just getting a job and working your way up
What do you guys think about buying a bunch of the cheapest mercer knives and learn to sharpen them? I figure it's probably worth learning to use and maintain a shit knife>>21821288>>21821290Yeah I'd prefer to work my way up but unfortunately my country is stupid and it's a qualified trade so I need to go to school or do an apprenticeship to get anywhere
>>21821314>>21821314IDK anon i wouldnt cheap out on your shit if you are gonna he graded and potentially pass fail over it
>>21821205Im not going to say its a waste of time, but just be prepared to get into your first restraunt gig and have no one care about your culinary school. School or not you still have to start at the bottom. You should be able to progress faster than some dick off the street, but you still have to do it. My best advice is dont be a cunt about it. Everyone in the kitchen game has had to work with some bitchy faggot that is constantly saying " well in culinary school" and its generally not a good way to integrate into your workplace. After culinary school you will still learn valuable lessons from a 50 year old alcoholic high-school drop out ( your boss)
>>21821205Unfortunately I have no clue but I hope you enjoy it and you end up with a great career
>>21821205Youll learn more being a kitchen bitch at any decent ristorante
Don't listen to these anons saying that education is a bad thing. Some people are fucking weird and think they're clever for saying that it's not worth getting educated. All 'smart' and smarmy.
>>21821205make me a sandwicha GOOD onepussy
>>21821205>culinary school>trade certificationlmao you're getting scammed hard
>>21822113>Some people are fucking weird
>>21822113I think the bigger issue is the american education system, and that’s why people are suggesting culinary school is a waste of time/money.Whereever this guy is, cooking is obviously taken more seriously and it sounds like he needs to get some sort of training. Americans don’t even need to be Serv-safe certified to start working in a restaurant LOL like.. it is factually not important here unless you’re trying to get into the top tier restaurants. And that’s pretty cutthroat and small pool of opportunity.. i personally dropped out, mostly due to health, but i don’t plan to go back and finish. Based on everything I’ve heard and experienced in the American Midwest industry, it is not worth the money. Who you know, and your experience, is really what matters. That’s true for every industry here desu, credentials can come second compared to a good reference. >>21821314Idk man, it’s kinda cool. What’s the base starting wage? How does it compare to other industries?
