I will not buy into the "Japanese food" propaganda
Sushi and Ramen are the only passable Japanese dishes. Every other aspect of their cuisine is bland, gross or derivative.
>>
>>21821670
Japan has good food but when it comes to curry they're in last place

1st place goes to Thailand
2nd place goes to India
And 3rd place goes to Japan

am I missing any other curries?
>>
>>21821674
You missing basically every other southeast asian country.
>>
>>21821670
Japanese cuisine is just food from the convenience store or vending machine. fuel for a 100 hour work week
>>
>>21821676
But how different does it compare to thr aforementioned? Because each of these 3 are uniquely different. But i never knew there was that many different styles or curry. Then again, I've never seen a restaurant that does Asian cuisine that wasn't either of these. Does Korea have its own style of curry? Vietnam? I've never seen curry at a pho restaurant and they usually have other options.
>>
Japanese curry has really grown on me. Its not as good as any other country's curry, but curry katsu hits the spot when you're craving it
>>
>>21821686
You should just accept that you just don't know anything about it. Thinking 'India' has a monolithic style of curry is a dead giveaway.

I dont. The ranking was basically from my own personal experience with the curries I've personally tried. You got a problem with that or something, you seem annoyed at my opinion.

i lived in tokyo for five years in my early 20s. yes, i laughed at your post. no, i won't tell you all the cool shit i ate that you've never heard of. yes, you are a faggot. yes, i banged tons of girls. no, you'll never do that.

Interesting. I think I'm going to look into it tonight and see if they're really that different or just similar with slight variations due to locally available ingredients and such.

Why even compare them? Japanese curry is not the same as brown people curry. It's not mixed with cheap cuts of meat to improve their palatability, its a sauce to accompany rice that is most comparable to how western gravy is used for potatoes. As you can see from the pic, the sauce is not drowning the meat like it's used in the other two cuisines because it's a completely different and more refined application of the spice blend.

Sri Lankan, Malaysian, Indonesian.

Hell I'd even rank Singapore above Japan for curry.
Japanese curry is more like European curry. Something you get with french fries and bratwurst in a pub
It's tasty enough though
But nowhere near as complex as picrel: a Cambodian fish curry

Too long. It's not really a thing without the "DR", but these gatekeeping incels really love it when their "in speak" is misunderstood. They think you need to "lurk more", which they will invariably spell "moar".
It's a really stupid and gay community here. Mostly pedos and incels and some genius master chefs like myself who know everything. I only have so much time to bequeath my wisdom though. You just happened to get lucky.

What sort of retarded braindead opinion is this? The entire countries of Japan and Korea are derivative of China. America is derivative of Britain. You’re a retarded ape if you think that a dish having origins somewhere else is inherently a bad thing.

As someone that has spent a considerable amount of time in Japan I can say I don't like Japanese food much
I like the americanized kind but authentically I'm not a fan
After the novelty wore off I found myself eating western food most often instead of Japanese stuff
Burgers and fries most days, fried chicken, crepes
It's actually pretty funny how I ended up with the palate of a 5 year old fairly quickly

Ketchup is a perfectly fine ingredient, I'd wouldn't claim that sloppy joes are haute cuisine or anything like that. OP's pic isn't even a good example of japanese curry. something like this is more accurate to what most people in japan eat, and even then I''d argue that this is still too glamorous. Curry is delicious no matter the country, but treat it like the comfort sloppa it is.

(I'm actually curious, if anyone here can weigh in: Is okonomiyaki well-known across Japan, like a Philly cheesesteak is in the US, or is it more obscure, like a fry bread taco?)
>>
>>21825830
It's funny how korean food is basically this, but made of walmart ingredients like spam, american cheese, and instant noodles.
Okonomiyaki is a type of slop but it's very sophisticated and defies the negative connotations. It uses high quality ingredients and the cook and presentation are involved. The noodles and sauce come from packages but everything else is real food. Still, the noodles are dry wheat noodles, not instant noodles like a Korean restaurant would serve. Even slop street food in Japan is maxed out quality version of what other poors are eating. They simply refuse to settle for less. If the whole world was Japanese, we'd be living in a utopia.
>>
>>21823744
>>21823570
Holy cope. Japan took brown people spicy powder and gave it a real culinary purpose beyond masking expiring meats. Anglo curry is just adding curry to gravy. If it was introduced to Japanese cuisine this way, it has certainly been refined and perfected since.

It literally is British Curry. Got it from them and actually imported Curry powder from Britain, for I think 20y even though India is just around the corner. Someone in the Japanese Navy thought it would be a good idea to increase Beef intake so they needed a simple dish that could not be ruined by overcooking.

I went to Japan recently and I have to say, I found everything to be underwhelming. It was a great trip overall, and I enjoyed it very much, but experiencing everything made me realise it's all overhyped. You eat sushi at home and people tell you it's so much better in Japan, and then you try it in Japan and you realise it's the same shit. Salmon is salmon and rice is rice. I got to try Japanese curry and I liked it. There was fuck all meat in it but I still enjoyed it. Very simple dish, hard to fuck it up. As for whos curry is better, it's down to personal preference. But I agree with OP that apart from sushi and ramen (and I'l add curry) there isn't much else that's good. But that's normal. You could say the same about any country's cuisine.
>>

>mapo dofu
>yaki udon/soba
>gyoza
>zaru soba
>agedashi tofu
>sunomono and all kinds of pickled stuff (even with miso)
>the quick miso ramen by Just One Cookbook

in general it was quite interesting to learn different techniques I was not used to, even though the costant seeping of kombu and katsuobushi to make dashi and various kinds of sauces (99% of recipes) becomes a hassle after a while.

How hard is it to make takoyaki at home?
>>
>>21828145
very easy if you have the specific pan, impossibile otherwise
>>
>>21828145
I didn't like takoyaki. I mean it's just cooked octopus with some other shit to give some mild flavour to it, it's not that great.
>>
>>21828155
Yeah guess I'll pass then
>>
>>21828164
Just use an aebleskiver pan.
>>
>>21828161
Japan has a poverty mindset even though they're actually rich as fuck. Octopus is tradition, but fucking stupid. I see an octopus and simultaneously think what the fuck is that/cool/wtf. I don't think I want to put that in my belly. It's not food it's a weird sea creature. Generational trauma I guess makes japs/meds want to eat it. Takoyaki is generally underwhelming like most jap food, but if you use a normal pork sausage to substitute the octopus it goes from meh to this is entirely too much work for what you get but it's good enough and omf this is just like my chinese girl cartoons.
The worship Japanese food gets isn't really because japan=good. Japs are just fussy and picky eaters who, like the French, insist on quality ingredients. Japanese have unrefined childish palates(moar sugar moar salt lmao), but because they are so picky even slop like ramen or okonomiyaki come out OK because every ingredient has to be fresh and good.

>>21827484
Yea I have had it before, it's good.

>>21828106
I've never seen any south or east Asian restaurants. Typically in America it's either Chinese American, phone, japanese/sushi or Thai. Now curious to look and see if i can find any.

>>
>>21828826
I've tried wasabi a few times, and it's not like disgusting or anything but I just don't really feel like it adds much to the food. Much like horseradish by itself it just kicks me in the sinuses and doesn't do much else, maybe it could be a supplemental ingredient in some kind of sauce or condiment and I'd like it as much as I liked the burger I used to get at a restaurant that had horseradish mayo that tasted really good

This. Wasabi is more sensation than flavour.

Japanese curry > Indian curry
I like the refined taste.
>>
Japanese curry is the only one I like because it's not 99% coconut milk and sugar like literally every SEA curry, and I hate Indians so I wouldn't eat their slop (which was a British invention anyway).

If SEA curry is your favourite you are a literal baby that likes sweet milkies with some owee spice. It's the culinary equivalent of putting ketchup on your steak.
