I make the fancy butter. You can control the salt content and the method and level of culturing then freeze it in single-serve portions to thaw out when you're going to use some. A few hours work lasts for 6 months, you only need to do it twice a year, easily worth it if you have a stand mixer.

You're actually wrong. Not french butter, but certain french butter's names are protected by law. The red stamp goes on protected origin products and have to be made a certain way and be made in a certain place. Lots of traditional cheeses are given the designation as well as meat products.
