I've had the displeasure of trying oatmeal, milk, garlic powder, coffee creamer, and ketchup with the GV brand at they all taste like nothing no matter how much stuff I add and or use? Is it just me?

"great value" and other franchise-specific generic brands (with the exception of Kirkland) are, very literally, the exact same product as at least 2-3 competing brands sitting next to any given product on the shelf
there's not 500 factories for every single individual product in the store. there's a handful at best, and they establish contracts with brands to put their branding on various cans of the literal exact same product inside
not conspiracy bullshit, this is common knowledge in food manufacturing. go tour a food processing facility some time and pop some questions or just get a good look in the depot, they straight up process everything to the same specification (with occasional exceptions, but this is significant in expense and only really done by specialty brands) and a different sticker put on top

this is the same anywhere in north america and largely the same in european processing. a really damning example are tomatoes. over 90% of all tomatoes in the USA (frankly, similar figure for all of NA including Canada) are grown in California. there are 15 or so factories for tomato processing in California. HUNDREDS of brands nationally. the brands themselves don't have factories (with a couple exceptions) they just contract these facilities to slap their logo on top
similar but more specific example that I worked with directly, in ontario-canada, we have *2* tomato processing facilities. every single brand anyone sees in the store that isn't imported comes from those facilities. nothing is changed on the line, at all, aside from low-sodium options and the like. difference on the shelf could cost you several dollars a can for the same shit
everyone talks about branding like this outside of food contexts for savvy shopping, but happily goys several hundred dollars a year so their can of beans has a less shitty picture on it. stop being retarded and learn basic food supply chain economics, save yourself some money

This misses a lot of key points about how food is grown and processed. Food from the same farm can vary a lot, produce is graded by quality. The more ripe and less defective produce will probably be used by the more expensive brands. Cheap ketchup might use less concentrated tomato paste so it tastes a little more watery. Food can come from the same farm and be processed in the same factory but that doesn't mean the make one big batch of something and just put it under different labels. I notice cheaper beans more often have broken and discolored ones.

The same brand can even vary between stores. I bought a brand of plantain chips at Walmart and a lot of the chips were broken and overly hard, the same brand at Costco was noticeably better quality with most of the chips being whole and no hard ones.

I still buy the cheapest brands like 99% of the time because it doesn't really make that big of a difference to me and the name brands can be so much more expensive, but they're still not the exact same product.

i'm moreso referring to specific comparable products, e.g., canned whole/diced tomatoes and passata. we get just under 1000 bushels a truckload, but we're getting nonstop truckloads 24/7 day and night during peak season and they're all from completely different farms (~160 contracted when i was there), graded on the line, and divvied up to various products from there. if it's being processed, it's still a giant mishmash from a wide swath of plots, each farmer has their own soil testing and input approach ultimately impacting their product, but once it hits the line it's a crapshoot at what's what - the brand has literally no impact on this, they don't get to "choose" for production runs in these facilities. these type of products are, in fact, the literal exact same product.

you are correct that there are some distinct exceptions. ketchup is one such case where there are pretty stringent regulations and grades specific to the ketchup itself. however, between the various grades of ketchup we put out, there's still 20 brands getting slapped on the same shit. just need to be a thoughtful shopper and understand what the actual legal definitions of "quality" are and what's just marketing, given 99% of it is just marketing.

this does not apply whatsoever to fresh produce which is a very different story and i strongly advocate for people who care to peruse some introductory agronomy/crop disease/plantsci materials to be able to distinguish certain markers for quality on top of tracing origin of what they buy, albeit this is pretty autistic
