One of the worst regional cuisines in the US, for some reason people go bananas over what is essentially nursing home food. I’m not talking about the shoo-fly pie and Lebanon bologna you get at Dingle-durfer’s market, I’m talking about actual dishes:>Chicken and waffles but it’s stringy boiled chicken in a greyish gravy on top of soggy undercooked waffles>Chicken pot pie but it’s stringy boiled chicken in greyish gravy with giant soggy egg noodles >Pork and sauerkraut but it’s dry-as-fuck pork swimming in sauerkraut dumped straight from the can>Chicken soup but it’s stringy overcooked chicken in a thick greyish gravy and at least 60% corn by volume Is it a skill issue?
>>21854202>people go bananasnever heard anyone talk about this food let alone go bananas over it, and I've always lived in the northwest, though not in PA.
>>21854205*northeast
>>21854202>Pennsylvania Dutchthis is a dialect, not a cuisine, dumbass.
>>21854202Dutch food is bas in general
>>21854352Pennsylvania Dutch is actually German.>>21854202I grew up in Schuylkill County, it was always garbage like that. I thought I disliked pork and sauerkraut for years until I tried it far away from Skook. Turns out the people around there are mostly retarded.Boilo is good though.
>>21854202PA Dutch chicken and waffles are good and I will die on that hill. It's stewed chicken with vegetables sometimes on top of freshly made waffles. Is it fancy or complex? No but its fuckin delicious and filling. I like the classic southern chicken and waffles more, but the PA Dutch version is based as well
>>21854495That’s what I mean by skill issue, I feel like the hicks and Amish making this stuff are just completely lacking in understand of basic cooking fundamentals. “Sauté” is a scary foreign word.
>>21854202PA has amazing food culture, and penn dutch food is an important part of it>scrapple>teaberry ice cream >chips still fried in lardThe Smorgasbord is amazing. All the little Amish shops with giant bags of fresh cookies are amazing. OP is a faggot
>>21854205There are videos on YT of people raving about how much they love going to the various Amish buffets in that area. There are some negative reviews, but those are usually about a particular dish being bland, and still positive about the overall experience.
>>21854643Trying to move up there and the amish shops are probably what I look forward to the most. Are there many in the pittsburgh area or are they mostly further east?
>>21854643You’re talking about touristy snack food, not home-cooked meals. Nobody is eating chips and cookies and bologna for dinner. And of course Shady Maple is good, barely any of the food is actually Amish and things that most rural Pennsylvanians can’t afford to make at home. Again, I’m not talking about snacks and desserts which PA obviously excels at.
>>21854202Its literally reject modern, embrace tradition food anon. People love it because it's a simple hearty and comforting meal in an environment that brings us back to olden days.
>>21854643PA also has birch beer, and Snyder's sourdough hard pretzels. I miss those things a lot. However the home cooked meals from the locals are awful. Imagine going to some church potluck as a kid and you get exactly what's in OP's post.
>>21854695>there is a small minority of people who like it>this small minority searches for others who also like it to reinforce their views
