Why don't boxed mac and cheeses say to use cream instead of butter and milk?
It's way better, needs only one ingredient instead of two, and way simpler than mixing in the butter and milk, so it would be more appealing to the lazy on top of being better.
Also what do you put in your mac and cheese?
>>
>>21863718
what do you mean by cream
>>
people generally have butter and milk in the house. cream would require additional shopping which probably would have the effect of discouraging some sales.
>>
>>21863718
I'm going to try this later today. I will substitute the 1/4 cup of milk and 1/4 cup of butter for 1/2 cup of heavy cream. It better be good or I'll be back to bitch about it later.
>>
>>21863740
not OP but you should make this into 2 experiments.

>today you make it with halfa cup of cream
>the next time you make it with halfa cup of sour cream
>>

okay well I’m about to crack open a can of ravioli, is this a good time for it?
>>
>>21863718
They have to print every box with the same info, and making the "healthiest" recipe means using water for directions
i noticed in the last 20 years they can estimate calories putting say 100-300 per serving, but they can suggest substituting maybe heavy cream
if they advertised "we taste good" and only included the good tasting recipe, I don't think they'd sell as much
>>
>>21863753
NO. use it in place of milk or cream in a recipe, don't just slop it onto your posta.

because they want to keep that calorie number on the back as low as possible.

FUCK. I forgot to buy cream. Sorry guys, I'll have to try again tomorrow.

Butter and potwater only gang. Milk makes it too runny, cream changes the flavor for the worse.
>>
>>21863718
Nobody keeps cream around. Besides, you just use butter anyway. It's been a while but I think I found 3/4 stick worked out best.
>>
Bumping this thread, I get off work in a few hours and still intend to try the cream thing.

actually you know what, I have some Kroff Dinner that was sent to me for Christmas and I will do the sour cream experiment myself. I will report back honestly and fairly on how I think it stands up. >>21865453

Why can't Americans make real Mac and cheese instead of relying on commercial packets?
>>
>>21865516
I feel like most people don't realize how easy it is because they've never done it and their parents probably never made it either. For the exact same process without spending much more for higher quality ingredients you get such a vastly superior product. There could also just be a craving preference.
>>

This is what I came to post or make sure someone posted.
Glad it was posted early also. Nothing worse than a really obvious, common sense answer that no one gets to for 19 posts.

I always have cream and milk and butter on hand, but I think it mixes better with milk and butter. Also, the butter is salted and the cream isn't. If I went strictly by the instructions and measured it out with milk and butter I might even add a splash of cream also. When I do eat mac and cheese, which is rare, I use two packets of cheese and 1.2 boxes of pasta. So it needs a little extra liquid. Last time I made it I used half and half and butter and melted a Kraft Single in there for good measure. It was super rich and cheese-packed. I whipped everything with the powder early until it was smooth before folding in the pasta. It clumps easily if you don't do it right. You get that clump of cheese clay stuck in the spoon. You guys know what I mean. But to eat it would deprive the mix of what it needs. So you don't eat it.
That fucking pic OP posted is making me want some so bad. And I'm on 40mg of gummies on top of it. Thankfully I don't keep box mac in the house so I will not be cheating tonight.

Wish i had been in this thread earlier but it seemed boring.
You can’t do two heavier things like that. You can do butter + sour cream, or butter + plain Greek yogurt. I’ve never tried only using cream, but cream + butter doesn’t sound good because cream doesn’t have any additional tanginess. Maybe just cream would work but i don’t think it’d be better, it’s just OPs concept of easier.
Yogurt + butter is best for Annies mac
>>
>>21863741
>>21863744
I use buttermilk in my homemade mac and cheese. It isn't exactly spin your head around good, but it's noticably better, as in: I'll eat either one, but I prefer the buttermilk tang flavor.
>>
>>21867322
I really like this idea, will be trying

>Did you have kraft mac for breakfast?
I'm a third shift creature, time of day doesn't mean much to me.
>>
>>21865544
Your methods are sound. Reminds me of my youth, boiling hot dogs and splitting a pot of Kraft with my old man.
Only thing missing is shredding a third block of cheddar off the block right in there. We only used singles for my school lunches like baloney or ham.
>>
It would be better with real macaroni and real cheese too. It's not supposed to taste good. It's for single mothers who hate their children.
>>
>>21863718
Why would you use milk and butter and not cheese...?
>>
>>21865516
It costs fifty cents a portion for a meal.

No, you cannot make your own for that. You can't even get close.
>>
>>21867313
That sucks, appreciate you posting the results. If you have cream left maybe try partial normal recipe but then fold in some whipped cream, maybe the extra air will improve the perception of flavor.
>>
>>21868433
Disingenuous dumbass. Anyone can easily make a single portion for a meal for less than $0.05 and it would be superior in quality to your Krap Mac & Cheez.
>>
>>21868504
Utterly ridiculous suggestion. The cheese alone would cost more than that. And if you're making your own, why the fuck would you use powder? That's not what anon was >implying, moron.
>>
>>21867313

>>

>>
>>21868513
The implication was that Kraft was a good value because the box is only some 10x+ the cost of ingredients. If the goal is to make something equal or better then powder cheese is more than sufficient here. A box doesn't even have a whole ounce of cheese powder and is 3.5 servings. Without even buying on an industrial scale, just from normal ass websites like Nuts it comes out to under $0.05/ serving. This was demonstration.
If I'm making macaroni and cheese for actual humans to eat then obviously in real life I would make macaroni and cheese, but that's not what is being discussed. The cost of $0.5/portion was for "mac and cheese".

>>
>>21865516
mac and cheese is typically seen as either a pantry reserve style meal or a quick side, something you'd have at lunch with hotdogs. if an american were specifically going to have mac n cheese for supper they'd be likely to make it from scratch. one compounding issue is that traditional cheese sauces can come off as grainy to those who've had both, there is an appeal in the ultra smooth packet version.
>>
This shit absolutely mogged kraftslop until they changed the recipe and now its slop too.
>>
>>21868534
a large investment in an ingredient that is going to see infrequent use is not very economical. would only make sense if you religiously purchased the blue stuff instead of just having a couple boxes in the pantry every once in a while.
>>

>mogged

Thats just plain dumb. Get Uber eats if ingredients is some unfathomable and unaffordable "investment" for you. If your finances are so bad $0.05 breaks you I would suggest reaching out to local food banks.
