What's the worst food trend in the past 25 years?

For me, it's smash burgers.

>dude, I took less meat and SMASHED it
>>
Hot honey is bad. Buffalo wings are bad (yes they were around 30 years ago too but they weren't quite this universal). Bubble tea is bad. Craft malt liquor is bad (I'm talking about like Voodoo Ranger and that kind of crap).

Honorable mentions: the faux cronuts that everyone was selling (nothing like DQ's real ones which were legit good). And restaurants serving "hainanese chicken rice" that was just boiled chicken breast with cucumbers because getting the correct chicken and using the correct technique is too hard, I guess.

t. older than thou
>>
>Sriracha and Hot Honey on everything
>That period where everything had Nutella
>All the """"healthy"""" menu items fast food restaurants did in the wake of Supersize Me
>Pumpkin spice literally everything
>That dumbass Chicken Sandwich trend where every single restaurant collectively got rid of their chicken sandwiches in favor of copycatting Popeyes just because their sandwich sold well for like one month
>>
>>21871704
Fast Casual. I'm talking that transition from diners and neighborhood restaurants and lunch tables to generic slop joints with the same menu. In trying to find some middle between Dennys and McDonalds they just ended up destroying the Diners of America and replacing them with Chik-fil-as and Chipotles
>>
Bacon. I like it but to this day I can't look at bacon without seeing a soillenial redditor going "dude epic bacon!"
>>

Does restaurants replacing traditional fountains with this failure of a product count?
>>
>smash burgers
>trend
Guess my family and I have been ahead of trend for decades, then.
>olive oil is so trendy, man
My great grandma had been using it since the 1800s or some shit.
>pho is so fucking trendy
Been eating that shit for damn near thirty years now, if not more.
>ugh, don't you hate how trendy hydration is?
Been drinking water my whole life, bro.
>I hate how trendy sourdough is!
Literally the only bread I ate until I started school and still the one I prefer.
>>21871715
>implying Buffalo wings weren't everyfuckingwhere thirty years ago
Not that you'd know. You weren't even a zygote yet back then, kiddo. And yes, Buffalo wings were omnipresent in the 90s.
>older than thou
Sure you are, Jayden/Brayden/Kayden/Ayden. Sure you are.
>>
>>21871739
According to this anon, "trend" means
>brand new food nobody ever cooked before
and not
>every restaurant deciding to serve smash burgers at the same time
>>
>>21871721
>Sriracha
>trendy
It's been 30+ years. Safe to say that ain't no trend no more. Fucking Emeril was using Sir Ratchee on his Sat-Eye on his show back in the day. Really did my head in how he pronounced those words lmao
>Nutella
>trendy
50+ years is not a "trend", either. That's an established thing.
>>21871741
Y'know what I call smashburgers? Regular fucking burgers, that's what. In fact, it was about this time last year when someone on here told me what a smashburger even was and I said "so a regular fucking burger?" and bro said "yeah."
Everyone has been selling them since the beginning of Burgertime, which is a very good game and you should play it.
>>
Overpriced premium donuts were dumb.
I'm talking that period where there were those premium donut shops opening up making 4-6 dollar a piece donuts.
Donuts should be cheap, the best donuts come from tiny cheap asian immigrant bakeries. Something about Chinese/SEA breads translates well to donuts.
>>
>>21871752
>honestly thinks a "trend" cannot be an established food that suddenly gets added to every restaurant's menu, has every snack making a new flavor out of it, and is suddenly everywhere en masse
I really don't think you understand what trends are. They aren't brand new things, they're something that every business strategizes their marketing around. Smash burgers aren't "new", but when every restaurant suddenly starts using the phrase "smash burger" and has a new menu item they didn't have before, that's a trend. Superheroes and films about them have existed for a century now, but when every studio suddenly started doing Marvel-esque superhero movies at the exact same time, that's a trend.

And this is why it's such a shitty trend. They're one of the most unappealing bar food items imaginable, and look at this guy. People get so unbelievably butthurt when you say the truth and say you're a communist or a vegan or, here, a child. Evidently a white child of ambiguous gender. That's bad, I take it.

I wouldn't even mind them if people treated them like a hazing gross-out ritual food. Gefilte fish tier, lutefisk tier, mealworms tier. But no. Not only are you forced to pretend to like them, you're forced to pretend they're not SHIT.

I suppose if you grew up in upstate NY you'll think they've "always" been around but in fact they were only shoved down everyone's throat starting in the 90s and then they started trickling into "ironic" dive bars in the '00s. Prior to that they were only found at unironic places like Hooters.

Call me "le peak 1990 Millennial" but I think there's space for 8OZ thickburgers and double patty smashburgers. The best part of sandwiches is sometimes they can be super thick and meaty with a lot of flavors and sometimes they can be super simple with a few basic flavors in an easy quick bite

Everything has become ethnicslop in Takismerica. Everything has to have over the top spice, heat, flavors. Even at nicer restaurants that aren’t chains everything is gochujang Tajin cheesey acid pasta. There’s no subtlety. The palate is constantly overwhelmed. “Wypipo don’t season they food” destroyed food culture.

I was going to say this. I like an old school fastfood burger that was actually bite sized . Might not be good but any gourmet should consider presentation and how it's eaten. These big burgers just turn into a burger salad thing you have to eat with a fork... Defeats the point.
>>
>>21871736
These have one saving grace, is that they sometimes have Barq's creme soda. If they offer just the usual cola/diet/lymon/tea, with everything else greyed out, then it's a travesty
>>
>>21871704
Smash burgers are just to get you to eat fully-cooked burgers. After the steakhouse craze of the 00s, everyone was too scared to order their meat cooked, so smshb is a cope code word to say "please cook my burger well done, the way it's supp;osed to be."

I think he's just showing he falls for whatever people are saying they don't want you to know.
There's a trend generally online, especially on 4chan of people who legitimately are just by nature contrarian on everything.
There's no room for nuance, you're either compliant to the CIA's Reptilian Alien Jewish control experiment to create zombie cattle to consume or you're in the know and truly believe every conspiracy theory is not only true, but true to its most extreme extent.
It's like with people who think the Epstein Files show our president and a former president both enjoyed the company of particularly young women on a fancy island full of hedonism or you believe they were sacrificing babies there and making sacrifices to ancient gods mentioned in the Talmud and Gnostic books. The poster doesn't really have any beliefs beyond "McDonalds tasted better when I was a kid" and "That guy on the Podcast should be my fitness idol" because that's probably their most intimate relationship to food
>>
>>21872921
No, organic is a bad trend as everything is hopelessly contaminated regardless of how it is grown (and there are certainly loopholes in how something gets certified as organic) - enjoy paying twice as much for the same vegetable
And nothing more needs to be said about the conditions animals live in on a factory farm

This way people can feel classy and good about themselves when they go out when they’re still eating McDonald’s tier Sysco food chain restaurant depot garbage. I hold nothing against Bistros and Gastropubs. Frankly I like them both in concept. Good beer and big TVs with some fried food and sandwiches are great for hanging out with friends, coworkers, alumni, parents and siblings.
Bistros are usually a bit more intimate and have plenty of space for daily and seasonal specials. Sure they may trend like upper middle class generic. (Especially in middle class cities and neighborhoods) but the good ones are fantastic and do a lot more.
>>
Ghost Kitchens and the trend towards delivery everything is pretty bad. Like seriously people on this very board are paying an extra 10 bucks to get McDonalds delivered to them
IMO delivery should be limited to Chinese and Pizza.
Even before covid, but especially post covid there are people getting everything from Fast Food to Fine Dining restaurants delivered to them.
Like what's the point of a prime ribeye steak and sides if you're not at the steakhouse, but instead in your apartment on your couch watching some old favorite streaming show. What's the point of paying 25 bucks to get a quarter pounder meal delivered to you. You don't even get to refill your soda.

I'm glad that the salted caramel trend is over. That shit was fucking EVERYWHERE in the 2010s and it was always disappointing. IPAs are alright, I find them kind of boring because all of the ones I've had just taste like eating a hop pellet with a little beer underneath. I don't like that they take up such a large portion of the craft beer market here in Australia but I also wonder if they act as "containment" preventing other craft beers from becoming generic pisswasser with names that sound like weed strains.

I'm more pissed off with the drinking habits of other zoomers, drinking less beer in favour of shitty premixed drinks, 50ml bottles of fireball and just drinking less alcohol overall. It was very telling when canadian club had their "over beer" ad campaign, dark days for Ausfailure.

>I mostly drink hard solo (alcoholic lemon squash).
>I don't like beer got any ccs (canadian club)
>The only beer I really like is Guinness *sips the pilsner Urquell I gave him* tastes like VB
>Dude fireball is crazy tastes like heaven, burns like hell (66 proof sugar water)

I'm always hearing that zoomers are drinking way less which seems to be true of my mates but they're all somewhat autistic so maybe they aren't representative.
But I'm a faggot for complaining about that, I can just brew my own beer and enjoy it with my dad and uncles.

Since when do mallards have reactions to things other than sad quacking when being shot for dinner?

Go away you annoying maillard autist. I see your posts all over this place. I bet your second favorite word is "cuck".

Did you know you can achieve a maillard reaction without it being a memeburger?
Probably not, because you only know the term from watching memeburger tutorials on Tiktok.

>any fomo food
crumbl is the biggest offender but dubai chocolate gets thrown in there as well. don't turn treats into a fucking battle pass
>ghost kitchens
have one kitchen sling 5 different kinds of slop out of the sysco truck. it's fucking unreal, open up an app like doordash and you'll see 20 different restaurants in your area that you've never seen and will never see - because they don't fucking exist
>hot honey
it's annoying. if something is being put on chips, fries, sandwiches, and being served on its own that thing is probably a fad and is not good.
>sriracha/szechuan sauce
rick and morty fans.
>protein slop
throwing a fuckton of protein into something is the newest packaged slop fad and it's probably going to result in some kind of widespread health effect, like fat free/low fat salad dressings did.

What part about smash borga makes it a smash?

i made some with chimken just now. chicken burgers. taste is not as rich and settling as beef but there is some compensation in how much lighter it is. also, olive oil sucks for frying.

you might not even know about it since it's a black culture food trend, but it's called a spicy bowl. it's made up of pickle juice, red vinegar based hot sauce, sausage, eggs, random spices, jalapenos. basically a sodium bomb in a 25oz cup. the worst part is it's made by some random dude selling it out of his trunk, unrefridgerated for days. and it's eaten with doritos. i think black people have a broken tongue or something.

Poke bowl fast food restaurants & the concept of "bowl" food in general
>pay upwards of 15 bucks for a cardboard bowl of rice with some shredded vegetable toppings and a like 1/4 cup of precooked tuna or chicken
Asian "street food" fusion restaurants run by millennials
>Pay upwards of 30 bucks for some frozen gyozas and a shitty banh mi or pad thai cooked up by some Bourdain-wannabe
"Gourmet" burger joints
>menu only has 2 starters, 3 burgers and 2 desserts. you can make a better burger at home. no substitutions. there is more choice in their IPA menu. will probably close in a year or two.

in retrospect most of what I've written are just variations of >>21871724 . When I was a kid and a teenager in the 90s and 00s we still had neighbourhood greasy spoon diners if you wanted a burger and fries but didn't want to go to McDonalds or Wendys. But then around 2010 they all started to die off and get replaced by fast casual places that charge as much as actual quality bistros and brasseries but just serve fast food slop for zoomers and millennials.

in regards to alcohol, I think that the craft beer boom did nothing wrong because you had almost zero choice before it unless you were lucky to live in a place that had good regional breweries. The worst trend in alcohol however has to have been pastry/dessert stouts that were so popular around 2022 or so. Just the nastiest medicinal tasting shit imaginable being made for faggots who hate the taste of beer.
>>
>>21871704
no one specific food but "instagramable" food which is dying out is the worst I think

Smash burgers are great by the way, grilling with onions and a higher surface area ratio has obvious benefits

Stuffed crust. I have only ever had one and these fucks not only stuffed the crust with cheese, they threw pepperoni and sausage in that bitch too. It was basically like eating a pizza made of pizza rolls. What was I saying? Oh yeah. Fuck the normal stuffed crust
