>>21879441Go to the liquor store and buy the cheapest of whatever style. That's it, you're set. The whole industry is filled with snake oil bullshit. You taste a bottle of one style, you've tasted the entire style. Sommeliers can't tell a $10 bottle from a $300 bottle so don't think that you will be able to.
>>21879505yeah but which styles
>>21879441try a lineup of wines, comparative tasting with different wines side by side is the best way to expose your palate do different stuff and get an understanding of what your preferences are. imho, lineups are the best.
>>21879441wine is not necessarily this bespoke/expensive artiste pursuit, it can just be a hobby. I remember seeing that wine quality levels out at ~$60/bottle, and you can have a downright great time with a $19 bottle. the super expensive prices are for rarity/novelty of flavor, not necessarily great taste. just buy some. you could go by a varietal chart and choose by weight. you could go by color, you could go by region, or by pairing. you'll eventually find one you like.a good amount of the fun is finding the different notes. it's why it's fun to drink wine with someone else. sure, wine tastes like wine, but maybe this wine makes a certain part of your tongue tingle like it does when you eat a blackberry. so you say "getting notes of blackberry" either as an ironic faggot or a genuine faggot, but it's fun. then the person you're with says "I'm getting notes of cherry", and maybe you notice those notes too, and agree, or disagree. nobody's definitively right because it's ultimately subjective. it's a little back and forth, a sense that you can share with someone. an anon here gave me this book rec and it's good, it's never steered me wrong. there's a good few chapters of writing at the front, and there's a chart at the back if you're finding pairings.

Gonna be organizing a team building at some villa. Two night stay. Can't decide on what (red) wine to get. Will need two bottles for myself and 2-3 for the other 15 people.
>>21900509what's the budget? 2-3 bottles for 15 people seems on the low end, I'd just get a half case of something easy to drink
>>21900510I don't have a budget. Nothing ridiculously overpriced obviously. Half a case would be what, 6 bottles? If I get a case, there's no variety though. What do you have in mind when you say easy to drink? I personally like full bodied wine. Kinda don't really care what the others would like that much, but I do wanna pick something more rare and interesting.
>>21900516Get a case of Mendoza Malbec, that can be like $100, absolutely under $150 for a dozen of very drinkable full bodied high altitude argentine wine.
>>21900519I'd say the low end is around $80 USD for a case of good malbec, that's what a good retail shop is paying for wholesale by the case if they got a good malbec plug
>>21900509>Will need two bottles for myself and 2-3 for the other 15 people.Kek
>>21900519Malbec is the one grape I haven't gotten to enjoy. I think it's because last time I had it it was a shit brand and I was in a bad mood. These prices don't mean much to me either since I'm in eastern yurop. Our selection and pricing seems to be quite different. I did have this one really great Argentinian Syrah once, but I don't think I can find it again. I'm thinking maybe something Italian like Primitivo. I could get Greek stuff like Xinomavro or Mavrodaphne too. I could also get some Bulgarian bottles but those revolve around the most popular grape in the world (?) Cabernet Sauvignon, or Mavrud, which I'm not the biggest fan of. The caveat there is that these will be cheaper for the same or better quality. A lot of them are also branded as natural wines, but I really don't know if that's just marketing or what difference it makes really, and if it's a benefit or not. Outside of bragging rights in front of the hoes anyways. Is Malbec the more popular choice in the US?>>21900551If I want to get drunk I do one bottle of red wine then go to the bar for cocktails and shots. Since I'll be with colleagues, I won't get wasted and a bottle a night will be just enough to keep me tipsy.
>>21900563oh ya if you're in eastern europe I'd recommend Primitivo. Malbec is the equivalent of that here on the west coast USA. If you want something weird you can get good Saperavi from Georgia or Blaufrankisch from Czech for crazy value, not sure what the selection is like in Bulgaria tho. I've had a decent Cab Franc from Bulgaria once.
>>21900565>Cab FrancYeah but that's a meme. Maybe I'll change my mind in the future, but that's just too light for no reason. I also get hate for not drinking white wine, but really what's the point? These recs seem cool. I'll see if I can find them and try them out before I commit. Guess more excuses to drink wine.
>>21900573the point of white wine is that it tastes good with seafood and is very refreshing in hot weather
I also need to find a new wine bar, because a couple of days ago I was pouring my last glass at my favorite bar and I placed the glass a little harder on the table and it just snapped at the stem. Spilled it allover the damn table. Now I'm embarrassed to go back. Look at this shit.
>>21900584What's really embarrassing is people saw you do that, and then saw you grab your phone to take a picture of it.
>>21900588No, what was REALLY embarrassing was me getting a roll of paper towels from the girl, cleaning a bit, then going back to her asking her for the same roll, just for her to tell me that it's right there on my table.

>>21908972>>21909011It's like the value equivalent of Savigny to the Gevrey Chambertin (Morgon). Its a good value Cru. Least the ones I've had.
>>21909025T B H Senpai fleurie is the only one that seems to consistently push all the right buttons without pushing any of the wrong ones. And that includes morgon, which apparently has filtered me
>>21909027What I should have said was Morgon/Fleurie since they're usually both the most prized. I actually prefer Chenas/Julienas/Moulin
>>21909058Moulin seems to me at least as expensive as morgon
>>21909011the guy that bought the julienas >>21905675 i thought it was good but i think it lacked structure like most gamay, I haven't tasted fleurie yet but I think molin is still the only cru worth buying, morgon are often completely spineless--like wine for sour beer drinkers, the other end of the spectrum to say rioja, which is wine for bourbon drinkers--although i like the tannins on julienas, I think it's not as interesting as molin, the structure doesn't even compare imho. I think gamay in general struggles to achieve balance because the structure the grip is just so pathetic, I think there's a reason it often sells at lower price point than ploussard, trousseau and mondeause of similar quality, and that's not even mentioning the weirder reds you can get out of austria, northern italy and swtizerland these days which are only recently beginning to climb in price and gain recognition outside of europe. also, malvasia bianca from paso robles tonight
Pinot Grigio is by far the most overhated varietal of 2026. You niggas drop hundreds on Vosne-Romanee that taste like wet rocks and nothing else but will list a dozen flavor notes for an Alto-Adige PG with structure, edges and grip and say it isn't worth the $15.99 retail price.
>>21909254are you that guy who keeps sperging about how rioja tastes like bourbon barrel stout? I'm not exactly a rioja stan, I probably drink it 3x a year at best but I do think your view of rioja is a little bit eh... tescoswiss wine is a novelty at best. you could wipe out all the wines on earth and leave only northern italy and austria and I could probably live with that. wipe out swiss wine and I'd just shrug
>>21907708I find both are overrated, especially Nerello. Although i prefer Umbria and Sicilian white wines way more than reds. Paolo Bea does a good Sagrantino but i find most other producers make that grape very boring and dont make it fun. Aglianico i find has way more stylistic range from glouglou to serious long elevage styles, same with Canaiolo, and Pelaverga i find is becoming the new hotness grape in Piedmont given how every single one ive had has been remarkable unless Grignolino starts taking off.
>>21909367Pinot on skins is pretty top but i still prefer Pinot Bianco/Pinot Blanc and other Friuli grapes like Tokaj Friulano and Ribolla Gialla.Pic related is insane Pinot Blanc even if its not technically stylistically accurate.
>>21909367italian PG is one of those things I try every few years to double check if I was wrong, like with australian or south african wine. I think my last try was some meme PG from a 5000 year old monestary that was like $25 and it was mid. and that's better than I remember it being but for $25 I could get much better eye talian white wines. I will say it was better than the "kerner" which I am glad I checked off my list of second tier grapes to try, so I can never drink it again.so in conclusion italian pinot grigio deserves all the hate, and then some. loire is all a guy needs. fight me.

I used to drink quite a bit of it when I was first getting into bubbly but I got a bottle this weekend and it was almost offensively soulless. why did I ever think this was good.it reminds me of when I went back to aussie wine after moving on to other things. the days of innocence and cheap bottles are over.
>>21914487i still bring a bottle of gruet with me on the golf course in case i get paired with someone, im not pouring nice shit for randos
>>21914487Thats because typical American bubbly is mostly dogshit and they make it from grapes grown in places that are too hot and don't retain enough acidity when phenolically ripe. Ive had some good petnats but they don't really know how to do proper trad method. Honestly just stick to Corpinnat or Franciacorta if you want high quality but cheaper bubbles.>>21909504>are you that guy who keeps sperging about how rioja tastes like bourbon barrel stout?Unironically I can kinda see that from Toro and Ribera del Duero stuff thats high octane like Pintia. Also I think the issue with Swiss wine is that its way too expensive compared to its neighbours in France, Italy, Germany and Austria. Their ciders are pretty good though and stand neck-to-neck with Brittany.>>21909254>morgon are often completely spineless--like wine for sour beer drinkersI personally prefer Fleurie but top Lapierre cuvees are far from spineless. Maybe you prefer hot years from Beaujolais so maybe look into '20 and '22 Morgon.>think there's a reason it often sells at lower price point than ploussard, trousseau and mondeause of similar qualityIts because Jura and Savoie are becoming massively hyped by French wine drinkers. Ive had tons of wine from both areas, some Jura is worth the hype but most are massively overpriced and Savoie has a handful of producers who make shit anywhere close to being worth the sticker price in Paris or Marseille shops.Jurancon will probably end up being the next victim of Parisian price gouging.
>>21914630>JuranconYes the manseng is good.
>>21914734Bone dry Manseng when it gets salinic is so fucking good especially with charcoal grilled scallops. That and Jacquiere was my go-to when I was in Nantes even moreso than Muscadet and shit was ridiculously good.
>>21915333Jacquère*
2023 Maranges >>21914630Agreed Jura and Savoie is way too expensive for what it is
Got some Romanian shit at the polish joint
>/alc/ is kill>/cock/ threads never take off and die>/vin/ and /wg/ still persist/ck/ is a cruel and unforgiving board for the cocktail appreciator. I just bought a liter of Carpano Antica if you even fucking care........
>>21915754nice, make a boulevardier on my behalf, preferably with a higher proof rye
>>21915754just post liquor stuff in /wg/ fuck em we don’t need to talk about scotch vs bourbon consolewar shit for the 1000th timealso I have that same vermouth. Some guy recommended it to me once and I was like “oh I’ll have to check it out” and when I got home later realized that apparently I had been buying it for years and I just never bothered to read the text embedded in the ornate label kek
>>21915754Try>>>/lgbt/
>>21915444I miss when Jura was cheap....
>>21914630penedes has never done me wrong, today I got a bottle of xarel lo bubbly and an ossie sekt made from gruner veltliner. I don't like GV in general but maybe it sucks less in sekt, that's what I am to find out
>>21899157in today's topic of no one gives a shit, pic related was the best I had on my trip, though a nice sunny day definitely contributed to thathttps://www.rideauvineyard.com/product/2022-blanc-de-blancs

Yo guys I'm at the wine bar and I think I got served bad wine. I asked the guy if a bottle of so called organic red wine from 2019 would be ok and he said yah. Color looks passable but it smells like blue cheese/paint and it tastes kinda sour and bitter like vinigger. Not sureif it's an "organic" wine specific or if it's really bad. I really need to take a wine course. I asked a cougar next to me for her opinion and she said she'd drink it but it's on the brink of going bad. Hopefullym I didn't get an aura point deduction bt I returned it.
>>21917869yeah that's just natty wine. what happened is that wine technology got pretty advanced in the 90s and it ended up getting overused to the point where all wine started to taste pretty much the same. there was a huge backlash against this and certain wine critics (what we now call 'influencers') promoted the idea that the more a wine deviated from the generic international style, the better it was, somehowthis started off ok but eventually it spiraled into who could produce the most cloudy, rotten-smelling, dirty socks tasting vinegar. bonus points if it has unplanned amounts of fizz (we call that 'pet-nat') or if it's a white grape made in a red wine style for no particular reason, or a red wine made in a white wine style, again for no particular reasonso now we have a whole generation of millennials raised to think good clean tasting wine is a defect and if you can drink an offensive smelling wine without visibly gagging it means you're a sophisticated alice feiringthe solution is to ask if a wine is 'natty' and if it is, order something else
>>21916445What would you consider being cheap price for Jura? I'm a local so curious to see how much it's sold abroad or in other parts of the country
>>21917901>red wine made in a white wine stylesuch as? colder fermentation temperatures?
>>21917901Yo bro it's hours later and i'm literally hammered and about to die from alcohol poisoning any time soon, so excuse the typos and bad grammar. Is natural wine really a piece of fucking shit? i really need to take a wine course or whatever to start actually understanding things, considering how much I drink wine, but I was under the impressionm that natural wine was superior. At least after I had a bottle of natural red sangiovese I think it was last week and it was really good. I just saw online that it was different or whatever, I can't articulate my thoughts right now. The wine I had last week was different compared to what I've tried before, but it still had the taste of wine. This bottle today had the taste of an asshole god damn it. I'm praying I'm not retarded, because the dude tried gaslighting me by saying it's just not my cup of tea, instead of admitting the wine was bad, and it would be a terrible aura loss for me if the boss tries it after and says I'm a dumb fuck and that's how that s]pecific wine was supposed to taste. The guy himself did say he worked there part time and didn't really know about wine though. It didn't taste like bad wine even. It tasted like something that's not fucking wine. Tasted like how I imagine bleach would taste.Anyways, I went to the regular bar after to get FUCKING WASTED, and the bartender there told me that natural wine is a fucking meme and that I should stay away.[ Kind of like what you said. I had no idea really.>the more a wine deviated from the generic international style, the better it was, somehowLike I get it, but this one tasted lie green paint with glitter in it if you get what I mean.>he most cloudy, rotten-smelling, dirty socks tasting vinegarLITERALLY>bonus points if it has unplanned amounts of fizzNot sure because I had like 3 sips of the first glass before I returned it, but I did notice that it looked extra fizzy.
>>21918272>Drinking natty wine Ngmi
>>21918312Well I was trying it but I returned tbe bottle and I got a new one with primitivo in it and it hit pretty well.
what red wine makes you the sleepiest?
>>21918610Unironically cab sauv.
Bandol tonight
>>21918610Amarone
>>21918610rioja, i'd rather sleep than drink that shit
I do no care for Bordeaux.>>21919027But I do like Rioja (least the traditional ones, with less oakmaxxing)
Wahluke Merlot
>>21919673>>21919027you're supposed to let it age for a while, buy better brands where they age it for you if you're having trouble. it's so weird watching bongs discover oak isn't always good, considering how they'll sacrifice their firstborn for the CDP that tastes like someone added a bottle of vanilla extract
>>21920773Hmm I've never had an overly oaky CdP. The only Rioja that I've had that's not overly oaky is like R Lopez, Cvne and Muga.
>>21920801If you don't taste the spirit of 90s california cougar juice in a glass of muga blanco your mouth is broken
>>21920846Tbf I've never had Muga blanco yet. Have had thet Tondonia and Cvne Blancos though.
>>21920895tondonia blanco gran reserva has very distinct coconut flavors that can only have come from oak barrels, it's just well integrated because of the age
>>21920773>like someone added a bottle of vanilla extracthad a $20 bottle of rioja ~8 yrs old (iirc 3-4 yrs in barrel rest in bottle) because the thread was talking about it. Couldn’t find LdH or Cvne and knew what I was getting myself into but still holy FUCKING christ I could not believe the amount of vanilla. How in the fuck does oak even contain that much vanillin it’s insane. I’ve never tasted that in e.g. a whiskey
>>21920801>>21920846What a coincidence I’m this guy >>21921232 and when I bought the red (‘18 Covila Reserva, so correction it was 2 years in barrel) I also picked up a white which turns out to be Muga. Even more coincidentally I had already planned on drinking it today, will report back. Also snagged a priorat (‘20 black slate porrera) clocking in at 15% holy christ. Finally, I had a franciacorta last night it was alright.
>>21921402don't expect rombauer, I'm just saying it's not rias baixas. there is unmistakable oak, not to mention unmistakable evidence of malo
>>21921439Yeah. ‘23 and it’s definitely got a creamy texture with some vanilla but certainly kor overpowering like that red. Some minerality / sulfur maybe, honey and stonefruit. Overall it’s alright but seems kind of dime a dozen
>>21921665not overpowering*
>>21921665That's how I feel about every rioja white.
>>21921665it's a $15 white wine, you could do a lot worse but it's best to keep your expectations reasonable>>21921790the good stuff is limited production and the demand is high, unless you want to spend real money and go to relatively nice shops, it might as well not exist
2021 chenas tonight. I don't think I've tasted a bojo this old before. the freshness is gone but I can sort of understand why people say some bojo crus age well
>>21875974are those liquidfied farts he's sniffing?
>>21921854Only time I've been super impressed by a white rioja was the tondonia one I had a few years ago. But pricey. So I'll just stick to white burgs at the equivalent price. This is probably one of the ((good stuff)) you were referring to?
>>21921854>it's a $15 white wine, you could do a lot worse but it's best to keep your expectations reasonableof course. every now and then you’ll find $15 wines that stand out but that’s obviously the exception. Nothing against the wine as I said it’s fine, surely someone’s go-to, just not mine
2022 Colchagua Carmenere
>>21917869Sounds like a more reductive zero-zero red thats had some malo. Honestly if you think its not acceptable you’re in the right to send it back cause the bar would rather keep good reputation than take a hit on a 5oz.>>21917994Here in Leafland a typical Jura wine is usually no less than $65 CAD/€42 which would get you entry level or negoc stuff like the more basic Les Valseuses bottlings. Whenever id see Labet here it usually came in just north of €75 which is sad as i also know some shops in Arbois that sell similar quality smaller producers for less than half that price. Still sad i missed out on a bottle of Lannay when i had the chance.
>>21922035yeah, all the heredia white and rose wines are knock-your-socks-off tier. I haven't bought any since the normoids found out about them and pumped the prices so high you need a 30 year mortgage to buy one but man, those were good wines. still are, I assume. not like I'll ever know
>>21918272You’re probably drinking bad zero/zero wine from a producer that likely doesnt keep their cellar clean. If you want cleaner natural wine try anything from Catherine and Pierre Breton in the Loire or Victor Sornin in Beaujolais. If you want heavier red Domaine de L’Ecu does good cheap Syrah.
>>21918024no I mean like turley's dry white zinfandel, I'm not saying it's a bad wine, but it isn't necessary, other than to prove it's possible, and to be a contrarian hipster shithead. semi-sweet blanc de noirs still wines were invented for a reason and that's because they're delicious, they just got a bad rap because there's so much bottom shelf box wine made in that style. if turley really wants to be an iconoclast and "rock the boat" they should make a semi-sweet white zin, but they won't because they're pussies.
all my spring allocations bum rushing me at the same time, the cellar deepens...
Here’s an actual good Spanish white
