Kek England is such a shit hole. Here in NZ fish n chips is still super common and affordable. Chips + 1 piece of fish can be had for around $10NZD (£5). The quality does vary greatly but even small towns have 3 or 4 shops so at least one of them will be good.
You can still get fish and chips basically everywhere. But there is a generational divide. To old people (60+) it's still the main takeaway food, but not so to younger people. This is exacerbated by foreigners who want fried chicken or whatever. It's also quite expensive, definitely not a budget friendly meal. Where I live the fish alone, no chips, is £10. A large piece but still. It's not worth it. You an get a whole pizza for that
