Why do they elevate one’s culinary game…oh idk… say, 2 or 3 notches?

All the brainlets claiming they do nothing haven't apparently heard of just using more. Guess what, dried herbs (yes, bay is part of the herbs, not spices) tend to be weaker than fresh ones.

literally no one thinks bay leaf is a spice

I put like 4-5 in my Chicken Adobo and it makes a big difference if you forget them
It adds a nice piney herbal depth

I made red beans tonight. It's Fat Tuesday, so had a craving for creole food.

Anyway, I made it from scratch with Camilia brand beans, that exact brand of bay leaf, thyme, fresh parsley, cayenne, paprika, black pepper, and yellow onion, green bell, celery, fresh garlic. Anyway, absolutely would be missing the bay without it. It simmered hours.

Crystal hot sauce to finish on my plate!

I literally potted a bay laurel (Lauris Nobilis) about three weeks ago and access to fresh bay leaves has definitely made a difference to my cooking.
Plant was $18, potting mix was $10, perlite was $10, pot was $20. Worth every penny.

Lovely!
I have an allspice tree in the yard, it's pretty runty. I am sure you could keep it just fine in a small pot. I can't resist snapping off a leaf whenever I walk by it to the dock. It smells sooo good! The leaves can add to your smoker when making jerk pork or chicken on the grill, which is very traditional.

I use cumin, turmeric, peas and fresh bay leaves to make rice for Indian and Mexican dishes.

Jokes aside. Do they even do anything? I can't seem to taste the difference.

Next time you boil pasta, throw a few of those bad boys into the water and taste the difference.
