I'm going to Richmond next month because of work, and I will have around a week of free time.
What are some good american dishes worth trying?

I did a quick googled and I read that dungeon crab and oysters are good.
Have planned to rent a car and drive around sightseeing. So I don't mind driving somewhere near for eating and being a tourist in general.
>>
The McDonald's Big Arch Product is pretty good
>>
>>21923142
It's all slop from chains
>>
feembrap
>>
Smohk RVA BBQ was good. Had a late lunch there and a giant beer in the brewery nextdoor then watched their local baseball team down the street. 20oz ipas for like 6$. Other than that I got nothing. I was in and out in the one afternoon
>>
>>21923142
Country fried steak
Chicken n dumplings
Biscuits and gravy
Club Sandwich
Peach cobbler
Cinnamon rolls

Find a nice dinner with nothing but old people, you'll find the original Americana dishes before all the slop.
>>
>>21923191
These are all things you can get anywhere. Does VA have a scrapple or pasties type deal? In the sense of an extremely regional dish I mean
>>
>>21923204
>These are all things you can get anywhere.
Certainly not. You can't get a proper biscuit outside of the South.
>>
>>21923210
Sure. And you cant get brats outside wisconsin or brisket outside of texas, except all the places you can. So no unique dishes then?
>>
>>21923214
The Big Arch seems like a product you would enjoy
>>
>>21923204
OP said he wants American dishes. OP said he's going to Richmond. If you had any reading comprehension skills you would see OP asked for American dishes.
>>21923210
Very true, I got clam chowder in Maine once with a side of biscuits n gravy. The chowder was amazing, the biscuit was so dry and the gravy flavorless.
>>
>>21923221
No u. You've contributed nothing to this thread outside of listing cracker barrel specials. Scratch made biscuits are a staple at farm to table diners around the world. I get you're from the south and it's all you have, but come on man. Find at least a second thing.
>>
>>21923227
>American dishes
Oh in that case yeah old country buffet, cracker barrel, Walmart frozen section, McDonalds then wendies then KFC in a row cuz they all share a parking lot. You can only get this stuff in the south tho. Them there yankees can't wrap their city slicker heads round our clean southern livin! Make sure to try the water too. Good old fashioned american water. Can't get that anywhere else.

Anyways. Any region specific dishes in Richmond or specific restaurants that might be interesting for someone to eat and unique to the area?
>>
>>21923241
Idk I'm not from Richmond.
>>
>>21923244
Kek, fair enough

Virginia is not a state renowned for its food. You're asking a question that doesn't have an answer. I'm sure there are good restaurants but there will not be unique and regional cuisine. At least not in a way that is going to satisfy you as an answer.

Their board of tourism literally recommends eating ham, peanuts, and apples. It is not a culinary state. Just look at Yelp.
>>
>>21923256
Is there good ham n nuts in Richmond?
>>
>>21923273
No, but you can get McDonald's in Richmond
>>
>>21923142
>dungeon crab
>>
>>21923210
>You can't get a proper biscuit outside of the South.
Today you will learn that what you call ‘biscuits’ are called scones by the rest of the world and are far superior in Britain, Australia and New Zealand.
>>
>>21923329
Today you will learn that no one has cared about any of your countries for 50 years outside of use in american propaganda. But at least your prime minister will allow the war effort to continue thank God!
>>
>>21923325
Your country isn't built on the ruins of an ancient crustacean based society? Good eating if you can get them before they get you.
>>
>>21923142
For shellfish, go north
For bbq and fried foods go south
>>
Go to Rappahanock for oysters. The only regional dish I can think of is Brunswick stew. IDK were you would find it outside of Miss Fearknows which is low mid grade now.
>>
>>21923142
Don't let these trolls fool you. The height of American cuisine is the Big Mac, and our best beverage is Bud Light. I had GBoard type this because I can't read or write.
>>
>>21923191
The canned food and microwave generation is not eating less slop lmao.
>>
>>21923329
None of those countries can do biscuits and gravy, which is what the biscuits are for.
Scones are different here and often come with fruit or spices in them. They are not usually savory.
>>
>>21923329
I guarantee you fast food biscuits in the US blow away your scones, let alone fresh ones.
>>
>uhhh guys I will be in place X next month, recommend restaurants
>sooo you can go north of X, south of X, or you can go eat in Australia and New Zealand
Was ck always this retarded?

I have to travel for work sometimes so I'll give you a tip. This is what I do when I go to a new place.
>go to popular bar
>find the fattest guy there
>start chatting with him, tell him you're visiting town and looking for local restaurant recommendations
>prepare for culinary kino
>>
>>21923191
Diners with nothing but old people are ground zero for microwaved pre-made sysco slop anon.
>>21923142
In the US, the James Beard Awards are the award of record for good chefs. Just look up restaurants owned by/associated with past recipients and you'll have a nice list. Richmond has had a few winners in the past iirc.
I'm not familiar enough with Virginia to flag any regionally specific dishes though, sorry OP. Generally speaking the places in the US with super distinct food cultures are NYC, New England, South Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and Northern California/PNW. The rest of the country is really just variations on a theme (SoCal and Chicago fags will seethe about this, but in their hearts they know it's true).

> Have planned to rent a car and drive around sightseeing. So I don't mind driving somewhere near for eating and being a tourist in general.

Have you always been this retarded?
>>
>>21923142
Here's what you do. When you get there, look for older men that dress well without trying to draw attention. You don't want insecure attention whores, midlife crisis, tattooed man children. You want people who made it in life and don't need to show off but who clearly like to live well from day to day. You walk up to them and you simply ask in a polite way for a culinary icon in the region. Works everywhere on the planet.

Don't ask women, they'll avoid confrontation and they'll send you to what they think tourists like. Ask men, they'll send you to "fuck you if you don't like it" places (the ones you ought to discover).
>>
>>21924648
If they don't have any food then why are they all so fat?

Yanks live in a land of extremes, do they have mega processed turbo slop? Yes. Do they have some of the world's greatest food? Also yes.

I've got to give this one to the Americans.
>>
>recommendations

What are you craving, OP? Or what are you curious about? Don't be ashamed if it's too popular. You only live once and it's your money.
>>
>>21924719
just a silly guy trying to remind us that we have no culture of our own, despite being the cultural center of the planet
>>
>>21923142
You're near the Chesapeake, get some crab

>>21923204
I'm from New Jersey and we don't have 4 of those things here.

Were you in a special ed class? You know, because of the retardness?

>>
>>21924953
Idk if you’re familiar with america but you don’t have to drive far to find regional differences from somewhere like Richmond, VA. An hour south or north, pick one for better regional specialties like bbq or seafood
>>
>>21924983
Exactly my point
>>
>>21923191
I have planned to go look for one of those dinners like picrelated, or those that show up in american shows. Will look to order stuff in your list, thanks anon.

>>21923241
>cracker barrel
I plan to search for one of those because of tv.

>>21923256
>Their board of tourism literally recommends eating ham, peanuts, and apples. It is not a culinary state. Just look at Yelp.
Looked at virginia.org and .gov for tourism things. It seems that crab and oysters are the most regional things.

>>21923359
>Brunswick stew
Will definitely try it.

>>21924638
>The rest of the country is really just variations on a theme
I'm looking for that too. I want the authentic American Experience(tm).

>>21924729
>What are you craving, OP? Or what are you curious about?
General american food and whatever regional specialities
I also plan to go to a walmart and pick whatever snacks look more american. I'm looking forward to try jerky.
>>
>>21923214
You asked for "good american dishes worth trying", and the things he suggested are better in that region than elsewhere so they would be worth trying. You can get a shitty version of biscuits and gravy at the designated american eating establishment in your homeland but it will be shit compared to a well-done version. This would be like people suggesting french bakeries while you're in france and you going "oh so just sweets? yeah I can get that anywhere". It is worth trying variations of things that a region does well, like southern-style biscuits and sausage gravy with breakfast.
Just fucking get collard greens, fried green tomatoes, okra, cajun food if you're willing to go that far if you need so badly to cross off a tourist bucket list "things my friends at home haven't tried".
>>
>>21923142
Open up jewgle maps on your phone. Search for restaurants, the reviews are listed. When driving around, avoid any area with a Martin Luther King Jr Drive. Happy motoring!
>>
>>21925767
That's not OP you nigger.
>>
>>21925818
If it's not OP then he can ignore the first part of the post. Did you need me to spell that out for you? I gave 4 different suggestions as well depending on how far he's willing to drive so hop off my dick, homo.
>>
>>21923160
feembrap? I think I've heard my mom mention that place at some point but I'm not sure, also do you think they have those in Canada?

just go to a golden corral. you get all of the "american" food options available to you simultaneously. enjoy

Seconding this. I prefer crabcakes over whole crab, but it's just a preference.
Oysters, too.
"Country" ham very much a regional product; it's salty, and I think best in a ham biscuit (with a dab of mustard is my preference). If you can find Darden's or Smithfield ham you'll be fine.

That guy in the background is like "god I wish I was a cute 1950s girl on roller skates who everyone is happy to see instead of a weird lucifer face bald guy pushing around a crotch monster in a stroller and everyone here instantly on edge because the screaming baby is about to ruin everyone's meal"

Procreation was a mistake, the world is hell, and everyone who adds more life to it is a demon.

Why would you have dungeness crab in Virginia? It's a west coast thing.
>>
>>21925837
How often does she fall and get safely caught by a considerate diner? I can imagine /ck/ just unempathically watching her go down when she was hoping to land, safe in the grip of our manly arms.

There's transplants everywhere, especially in a major metro area.

>>

Dungeness is a style of crab not a species, get with the program grandpa
