I live 3 hours away from the nearest Japanese supermarket and haven't been to one since 2024, but I was in the area yesterday so I stocked up. R8 my haul?
meh, i wouldn't loaded up on specialty miso and nicer soy sauces, pickles, beer, whiskey, sake, mirin, lots of snacks and pastries too. not great, not terrible.
>>21945172oh yeah, we weebin now.pretty good haul. couldve been improved with some okonomiyaki stuff and some bulldog katsu sauce for max weebin. i also wouldve picked up a couple more jugs of ito en strong green.whatcha gonna put in the onigiri?
>>21945199It wasn't really worth getting sake, liquor stores are state-run here and the big ones in town have basically the same selection and prices. They DID have my favorite, Tamanohikari, which I haven't seen locally, but they wanted $56 for it which wasn't worth it to me. Beer was just the usual domestic-made Japanese brands and a few overpriced mid Japanese crafts so also not worth. Pickles would've been a good idea, but I didn't see much that caught my eye, I think because it was Sunday evening. What I was really hoping to find was one of those press things for making my own pickles but they didn't have one, I'll have to order on amazon or something.I can fortunately get good miso and soy sauces locally, we do have one very small (convenience store-sized) Asian market in town, but I like Yamasa for everyday stuff and they don't carry that there so I had to grab a bottle.I did actually get some snacks but I forgot to put them in the photo, in general though I'm not a huge fan of Japanese snacks (really not a dry snack person overall), much more into the actual cooking and meals.>>21945206Honestly I've never been huge on okonomiyaki, and you don't get the fun of it without cooking at the table anyway. Bulldog sauce I already have and can get at the local Asian market, actually I think even the regular supermarkets have it in their Asian section now. Same goes for the Ito En, I just grabbed the bottle because it was on sale but I can get it here at an inflated price if I really want it.Not sure about the onigiri, it'll be leftovers of something else. I make salmon shiozake somewhat regularly and that's a likely candidate.
>>21945172looks like you could get 99% of that from the oriental aisle at walmart so great wasting some gas i guess retard
>>21945172You forgot to get the stupid soda with a marble in it.
>>21945267They have that shit everywhere now. I'm over it anyway though, I lived in Japan for a bit (almost a decade ago now, fuck) and got all that kind of shit out of my system.
>>21945247Tasty looking meal and I like the variety of your haul, but do you have 2 dining tables?
>>21945267SUPER EFFECTIVE gimmick. I bought one of those stupid things specifically for the novelty! I remember thinking that, somehow, in america, they'd be simultaneously a weapon and something kids accidentally kill themselves with
>>21945172>>21945247You can get almost all of that stuff (including the Yamasa soy sauce, which is also available on Amazon) from any Chinese market where I live, but we don't have Japan-specific grocery stores. The things I need a Japanese grocery for are real mirin, good sake, the specialty soy sauces, like the other guy said, authentic condiments, like aonori, some good shichimi togarashi, if you can find kombu that's ACTUALLY from Japan and not Chinese kombu that's loaded up with lead and cadmium, a variety of good miso for variety... Maybe some produce that you can't get elsewhere, like the tokyo negi like you got, kabocha, and Japanese herbs like shiso and mitsuba.>liquor stores are state-run hereUtah?
>>21946076No, just different tablecloths in the 2 photos. >>21946567Central Oregon. We don't have a Chinese market either, and that's just as far away - pretty much anything that's not in my immediate region means driving over the mountains to the Portland or Eugene areas, which always seems to be right around 3 hours no matter what your final destination is. As I mentioned in another post, though, we do have a very small store that sells a whole variety of Asian food, but it's kinda random what they do and don't have - a decent selection of Mirin for example but limited soy sauce, and no Yamasa in particular, which is my favorite for everyday stuff, and everything there is overpriced so a lot of the focus here was stocking up on shelf-stable stuff for better prices. I wish I'd thought of pickles while I was there, but it was also a Sunday evening and the selection was limited on a lot of fresh stuff, for other things though it's hard to buy them unless I have a specific meal in mind and am ready to make it within the next few days. In this case going to the one Japanese supermarket in the state was really an afterthought while I was out there for other reasons and it was as much about just seeing what the place was like and stocking up on some staples as anything else.
>>21946567i went to two japanese stores and didn't see Koji extract. Im confused. does anyone know where i can find it in stores in southern california? im around korea town, little saigon etc
>>21945172other than the different pre packaged ramen, you can get all of this at any basic grocery store....
>>21947453Which stores did you go to? I don’t live there anymore but there’s several large Japanese supermarkets in Torrance.
