We've got fifteenish pounds of salt and double-ish that of various kinds of rice (medium grain, sticky, instant, basmati and wild) so we're good on that front.As for meat, we eat mostly seafood to begin with so flat tins of mackerel are a-okay by us. Tinned chicken breast can also be good but it varies considerably by brand and, honestly, Aldi's own brand is the best we'd had, although we've not bought it in years so ymmv.Dried meat like jerky and bakkwa is expensive but making it yourself is not, especially bakkwa, since that's often made with pork mince ($1.79/lb for fatty mince, $2.19 for lean in my area). You could use whatever meat is cheapest in your area and it'll be fine.For another surprisingly complete, shelf-stable protein, buy soybeans. Yes, I know. But they actually are complete, keep well and you can use them to make tofu if you but food grade gypsum, which concentrates the protein. The "milk" is easy enough to make (soak, drain, rinse, blend with fresh water, strain and boil because beans are toxic when raw) and after making tofu, leftover soy whey can be used as a base for soup in place of plain water. If you're truly desperate for meat, go the North Korean route and keep rabbits (surprisingly, the most common meat in NK). They're fairly cleanly and can be fed on vegetable scraps. They're easy to slaughter, skin, gut and hang.

And that's assuming that the protein has to be meat, beans & lentils are cheap (for now) and keep very well. Put your rice/beans/whatever in an airtight container and freeze them for a few days to kill anything that might be in/on them. I keep a bunch of pic related around, I use it fairly frequently to flavor rice that I'm eating with curry or whatever, it's basically just flavored salt but that can be handy to have around if you're just eating beans & rice. Make sure to stock up on Tabasco or Crystal or Louisiana or other similar sauce.
