Yeah. The Japanese food we're familiar with in the West is a pretty small fraction of what they actually eat over there, and these days a lot of foreign cuisines or foreign-influenced dishes that are relatively spicy are pretty popular over there. A lot of Japanese people enjoy spicy stuff when they come to the West as well.

I am Japanese.
I often hear from people who have traveled abroad that Japanese food overseas is both too expensive and not very good.
When it comes to spicy foods that Japanese people often eat, Chinese cuisine comes to mind first, followed by Indian curry made by Pakistani chefs under Indian owners. Thai and Mexican cuisine are also becoming increasingly popular.

My Japanese friends seem to really like some American foods, like BBQ, Cajun food, good burgers, etc. Most of them also like Mexican food. They're "westaboos" who really want to be American though so maybe it's not the same for normal Japanese people.

It depends what you consider Japanese. Truly indigenous dishes are a pretty small minority of their culinary canon, most of what they eat is either straight up "foreign food" or heavily influenced by it, but many of the things they consider "foreign" are modified enough from their origins that I personally think they should be considered Japanese. The Japanese anon who also replied to me mentioned Chinese cuisine, but what he's talking about is probably a uniquely Japanese variation of Chinese food - ramen is a good example of that, and when it comes to spicier stuff the mabo tofu, tantanmen, etc. are significantly different from what you'd get in China.
