I'm going to Madrid in a couple of months, so I would like to ask you for food recommendations. What should I look for food wise? What should I order and where? Preferably traditional Spanish or local Madrid food. The must try stuff.

Last year I made this thread:
https://warosu.org/ck/thread/21363362 about Frankfurt and anons' recommendations were on point. Here's my review after the fact:
https://warosu.org/ck/thread/21460928

One anon suggested a specific cake shop in Frankfurt and it was 10/10, so if you can recommend a spscific location in Madrid plz do so.

As you can see from the archived threads this is not a larp. I WILL try what you suggest and report back. I don't trust random net reviews, so to hell with those, but /ck/ hasn't let me down so far.

I might try some fast food if I see something interesting, but not there for that. Spanish sandwiches (surely they exist) would be nice.

Not into those events I'm afraid. More into touring castles.

Hello anon. I live in Madrid and I'd love to recommend you stuff. Awful recommendations so far, and I don't think you should waste time on a cuban restaurant if you rarely come to spain.

General recommendation 1#: avoid paella anywhere in Spain outside of the Valencian region. There are a few places that are decent but it's just not typical and it's easy to sell to impressionable tourists.

General recommendation #2: In spain there's a spectrum from bars into proper restaurants. Most crummy bars serve food and I'd say that this is the most genuine experience for eating out in spain. Have a drink and order "raciones" to share with someone. You may get a free tapa along with the drink but it's usually just to have something to chew and usually not the best quality.

General recommendation #3: Actual typical foods from Madrid are delicious but you need to like tripe, innards and shit like that. Callos is one of the most typical things but it's not for everyone. I personally love it.

General recommendation #4: Seafood is extremely popular in Spain, and Madrid happens to have excellent seafood due to being the nexus of all coastal regions. Very decent oysters, shrimp, squid, and the like. You need to know the places though.

I could go on and on about this, but anyway. Here's a couple of places i like.

-Casa Toni (Pic related): Quality is very good and price is reasonable. Some seafood, some innards madrid style. I like it a lot.

-La Blanca Paloma: Exclusively for seafood. Very few items on the menu but its fun as fuck. Oysters, mussels and white grilled shrimp along with some wine. No chairs btw.

I could go on if the thread is still on. I rarely see spanish foods threads in here and there's fuckload to talk about.

cont.

I wanted to correct myself on the seafood bar.

It's "La Paloma", around la latina area. Not "La blanca Paloma".
The latter also exists but it's terribly mediocre.

You need to go to Catalonia (fine dining), Basque country (meat and fish) or the extreme south (paella). Like Eastern Europe under communism, Spain has suffered terribly under Franco. Like Eastern Europe, it never really recovered, except in the regions that rebelled.

Your best bet is Valencian, Basque or Catalonian tapas bars and restaurants in Madrid.
>>
>>21967323
Try the brown immigrant cock, they love that over there
>>

>>21968293
Holy based! Yes, that's exactly what I need. I'll keep the thread up for a week or a bit more, so post if you get more ideas. Thank you!

Not really into tripe and innards, but I'm willing to try pretty much anything at least once. I do love fish though and seafood in general. I just read about callos and it says the tripe can be replaced with lamb or cod, so I'd definitely try that.

Are bocadilos a thing (not sure about the spelling)? A friend of mine said they are popular Spanish sandwiches? He really liked them when he was there a couple years ago. Sadly he did the typical touris trap things, so couldn't recommend me anything more lol.

So
>beer with raciones
>callos (preferably with lamb or fish)
>grilled shrimp (never had them grilled which is strange)
and I"m saving those places you recommended.

Shame about the tripe. Never ever had it replaced with lamb meat or cod. I wouldn't bother as the main thing would be the strange texture.

Bocadillos? Nah, I don't think so. I mean sure we eat our sandwitches but they're quite dry for foreign pallates and I don't blame them.

This is a good excuse to tell you that you absolutely need to try all sorts of cured pork meats. You probably heard about jamón ibérico so go have that. -Museo del Jamón- is a rather touristy chain but they will have all sorts of ham you want, probably with different price ranges. It's good on sandwitch with some tomato to moisturize it. But if I were you I would have it as is with some bread on the side to have a bite of each.

Also of course your chorizo and salchichón, and grilled chistorra, which is a very greasy chorizo sausage that's quite strong too. You probably can find thes just about anywhere though.

For the rest, just go to places that look kind of dirty but also full of people. Avoid the plaza mayor, too.

Mind you, i'm not recommending you fine dining or anything particularly exquisit. Just your average way of hanging out on a weekend with your bros. Wine/beer and some raciones at your favourite neighbourhood bar. Some classic raciones which are widely avaliable if you spot them:

-Tortilla de patatas: Potato omelette. Somehow, Spain's national dish. Very simple but satisfying.
-Huevos rotos con jamón/chistorra: Fried eggs on a bed of fries with some ham or chistorra as toppings. Very filling but goes well with cold beer.

-Calamares a la romana: Fried calamari. Very popular in Madrid
-Pimientos de padrón: Some fried peppers. Some are spicy but most arent.
-Croquetas
-Chipirones: Small fried baby squid
-Grilled cuttlefish
-Boquerones en vinagre: Anchovies cured in vinegar and garlic. A fresher alternative, gotta love them.

Notice there's a lot of fried stuff. It's just how bar food normally is. People don't eat like this at home most of the time, and Madrid's food is traditionally very hearty. But if you want fresher stuff, go for Salmorejo or gazpacho or seafood places. A few other places I like:

-Casa Amadeo: Snails is the specialty. Everything is delicious anyway.
-Bar Duratón: I love the boquerones en vinagre here. But it's kind of on the edge of the center so I don't think youll bother.
-La Mancha es Madrid: Cold cuts and spanish cheese in a very laid back traditional kind of bar in Lavapies.

Don't sleep on the cheap decent wine if you like it. White albariño and godello are cheap and good. Reds are harder to recommend specifically but if you spend a bit more than the absolute cheapest, you'll like it.
For non bar options, on the other end of the spectrum, I love "Nakeima". Very pretentious place with high cuisine tapas, very expensive too. But it's awesome, no way around it. If you came here during the winter i'd tell you to go to a restaurant to have a cocido, but you won't be in the mood for that in june or so, believe me.

I'd keep recommending bars but in Spain that's like naming stars in the night sky. I'll come around again at some point this week and tell you more if i come up with anything else.

Check out this guy, btw. He's quite based and he can basically spoil all the good places. He did his homework.

only been to barcalona but the quality of food was great across the board. one of my favs was a cold dish/tapas restaurant on the ramblas? maybe spanish anon could inform if its a thing elsewhere but it was great.

NTA, but are there any specific codes of conduct in those places or is everything casual? I'm always fasicnated how in some countries they have ruless and rituals that foreigners miss out, like in Japan.
>>
This thread confirms my suspicions about Spanish food: it's Eastern European tier
>dude, internal organs, lmao
>oh, and some shit that was thrown on the grill and uhhhh served with potatoes or w/e
>and Arab risotto
>that's it, that's the entire cuisine of the entire peninsula!

>>21968340
Addinh to what the other anon said. I would look for boquerones fritos(fried anchovies), secreto iberico(a pork cut with some sort of side), try some place with patatas a lo pobre(almost confit like potatoes, generally with italian fried peppers), rabo de toro(bull's tail).
And if you like sweet stuff, look for some place with churros con chocolate(the chocolate will be very dense, I'm used to tourist thinking it will be like hot cocoa like). It's a pity that you don't go in Christmas season, as turrones, polvorones, mantecados and the like are very tasty if you like stuff with a ton of sugar.

>Go to local bars, try and avoid tourist traps
Ask for a "tostada de tomate" in any cafetería, they're usually allright and it's a staple breakfast. Olive oil is not as good up there in Madrid, but it's really good.

>There's a pretty good canned and preserves culture.
Try and get some "gildas", "banderillas", "piparras" or some "manchego" and "jamón" (a good one is like 4€ a packet, SPEND MONEY ON THIS, IT'S ABSOLUTE SHIT IF IT'S CHEAP). You can get a pretty solid meal with some preserves, a loaf of bread, a cold beer (spanish beer is to drink really cold) and a nice view.

>Supermarkets (buy local, yeah, yeah, but they're easily recognazible and the only thing that opens all day instead of taking a siesta)
Mercadona has the best pre-made foods, but Lidl has really good meats and vegetables. Alcampo is the cheapest, but has a decent range of international products.
