The issue with this image is that it's cherry picked. Most of those dishes are cheap everyday meals that people eat out of comfort (childhood parents being bad cooks or restricted by rations) or to cut cost. If a chippy sets you back £10 each then yeah you're going to try and just eat some simple mince and tatties to compensate for that cost.
