Vivino is for normalfags and boomers
Cellartracker is for obnoxious rich boomers, but i find their UI is better for keeping track of bottles on hand and tasting notes. Also still very Web 1.0 in design.
Raisin is also good for agrotourism, but caters more to natural wine.

>>21975543
cellartracker is the best, it probably has the highest ratio of industry people and serious collectors as far as the big apps go. although, as >>21975707 mentioned, the community definitely has a boomer leaning palate. even the winemakers are on cellartracker, they'll comment and reply to tasting notes on their bottles. delectable gets an honorable mention too, that app is underrated, lots of somms use it.

bought a second-hand proper decanter yesterday, similar to picrel but with a
looks kinda science-y, swiveling liquoids around feels oddly pleasant

had to give it a test, of course
the wine in question: viña maipo cabernet sauv-etc
swivel swivel swivel, very satisfying
the wine ended up tasting sweeter
never again will i mock those who insist on aerating wine

after many many glasses, i gave the decanter a good rinse and put it away somewhere clever, so that my cat wouldn't destroy it
when i woke up today, i found the decanter in many many pieces (on of them lodged in my toe), and the cat waiting to be let back indoors
so either i've put it somewhere not clever at all - or there are ghosts

the cohol got me acting unwise

I always considered buying a decanter (specifically one with that shape) but it looks like a pain in the ass to clean. Also, how do you reconcile aerating wine while keeping it at the ideal cool temperature? Seems like a pain in the ass to juggle the oxygen/temp levels.
>>
>>21982034
>cleaning
rinse with warm water asap. when you get deposits, warm water + 4mm ball bearings + vigorous swirling. crushed ice + salt also works
>temp
if it gets too warm for your taste cover/stop the decanter and chuck it in the fridge. wine doesn't have to be constantly at 55 burgers for tasting, it's just the ideal temp for long-term storage

After experiencing napa I have very little interest in wine tourism in any A-list wine regions. Maybe like, rioja or alsace or some place like that where the wine is high quality but most of the obnoxious prestige-hunting plebs who do wine tourism think that it's second class wine so they steer clear. Bordeaux, burgundy, southern rhone, nah miss me with that shit. I'd rather get topped by my local Rolex AD.

WV Chardonnay, Eola-Amity specifically. WV Pinot Noir is already climbing into the triple figures but the price of WV Chardonnay isn't moving as quickly. I'd say central coast GSM blends are still worth seeking out and collecting. I feel like lots of Washington AVAs have recently made a notable jump in quality, but they're not on that level where I feel confident splurging on pricey single vineyard stuff. If you really want to be ahead of the curve start hunting Cali expressions of Italian varietals and Jura varietals grown in the PNW. Michigan and Utah could be something some day but they're still a work in progress.
>>
>>21987576
Model moggs
>>
>>21988025
I somewhat agree that central coast blends are buy-worthy. I have been underwhelmed by the burgundy knockoffs that the PNW purports to be good at but off the top of my head I can't remember if I had Eola-Amity. A lot of Yamhill-Carlton. Maybe that's the problem. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just that it's kind of coasting on the "american pinot noir that isn't disgusting" talking point, once you get over that it's just ok wine. But like I said my judgment is clouded by the fact that I'm not comparing $100 bottles to $100 bottles, I work for my money, $45 is already pushing it. For my budget there's pinot noir I'll pick in a heartbeat over oregon, I'm just not saying where because I don't want to blow up my spot
>>
>>21988175
true, the Chardonnay out of WV is less of a burg knockoff and more its own (which I can't say about WV Pinot Noir). If anything, it's a souped up santa rita or russian river Chardonnay in style and then you get that volcanic minerality that really separates it from other stuff I've tasted. It's my favorite new world Chard after western Australia with those pre-dinousaur soil profiles.

my main reason for going to tasting events/conventions/festivals is to taste wines that I otherwise would not get to taste because (a) they are exceptionally rare in my market and/or (b) they are out of my budget and very high value wines. that said, I think it's poor etiquette to just taste the one or two trophy labels at each table and not at least try a couple other wines at the booth; it's also just dumb, you can easily miss out on some of the best bottles of the entire tasting and it's not uncommon for the highest valued bottle to get outperformed by "lesser" valued wines at the same booth, especially if that booth is pouring very high end shit.
>>
>>21989767
nta but I just looked up one of those, the wines it's competing with are just workaday $10-15 wines, and literally all of them get medals. every single wine. it's just a question of gold, silver, or bronze. I'm not saying this "shaw" guy makes bad wine but it's not like they're putting it up against the finest most rarefied wines from the winningest parcels of land. it's "how well does this stack up against other affordable wines intended to be acceptably good"

think of this as more like a consumer reports of wine, except nothing gets a failing grade.

Suckling's scores are too generous but he is consistent, I just take his scores and reduce them by about 2-3 points
>>

Suckling and Parker are mostly trustworthy so long as like you said you deduct some points out. And especially if you're familiar with their tastes.
>>
>>21991536
unless it's an italian varietal, then you add 3 points on top of whatever robert parker scored it, but parker doesn't really rate wines anymore.
>>
>>21991536
Suckling can literally be a 5 point swing in either direction, his reviews are useless. the last 100 point suckling wine I tasted I scored 93-94 and it's literally my favorite style of wine
>>
>>21991578
Who’s the opposite of Suckling?
>>
>>21991595
As far as big names go, maybe Neal Martin, top producers let him barrel taste their best cuvee that sells for four figures a bottle and he'll still score it 92-93. Any critic willing to be brutally honest when it comes to barrel scores and clarify in their review that the score will likely go up once it's bottled and aged for even a short period is a critic worth listening to. Like idk how anyone scores +95 on so many bordeaux en primeur tastings from the barrel when the best thing anyone can say about the wine is that it's "fleshy" and "fruit forward" as if it won't drink like a tight astringent ash tray for the next 5-10 years after it's released.

most wine competitions exist so that producers can pay for a sticker that they can pop on their bottles for a tidy 15% bump in sales
>>21989775
yeah, that happens frequently, tho sometimes I think it's because people go for the higher end shit first, the people running the event have to open another, and the second bottle is tight as fuck. or like at a Vega Sicilia tasting I went to last year, the '15 Unico performed poorly compared to the Valbuena, because of course it would, it's designed to not enter its prime drinking window until like 2050

Jasper Morris. one of the cool things he does is provide a star rating alongside a point rating, and that star rating is how the wine performs relative to expectations for the area/vineyard/producer. he's also the opposite of Suck (and most critics) in that he's focused entirely on Burgundy, instead of everyfuckingthing

I don't believe this claim. Every "they make wine there?" supposedly up and coming wine region has turned out to produce absurdly overpriced, overpromising, underdelivering wines. I don't think you can meet a reasonable standard of QPR unless you've got a shitload of producers and wine-adjacent support industries already operating in your region

t. stopped taking these claims seriously when I had a $45 bottle of ohio wine that simply wasn't good

NA wine is effectively cooked so yeah it all tastes like shit. they pressurize the wine to lower the boiling point of ethanol and then boil it off, but it still gets too warm. the good NA beer makers do something similar but beer is more resilient to warmer temps. although now that I think about it maybe a NA madiera is possible, as it's cooked + oxidized in the first place

costco sells more than their own-label shit, and depending on the store, sometimes you can find shit like palmer for $199. but even the kirkland shit has a few good ones, like the brunello, which I think is still produced by gianni maccari. with tj the only character I've gotten from them is some flaw or another or plain ol bad winemaking
