maybe you just don't like the "peppery" flavor that olive oil can have? some of them can be milder and fruitier, the california olive oil i had was like that. but most of them have a peppery taste that i don't always like.

no, it's more likely that you might be getting a lower quality regular olive oil sold as extra virgin. olive oil tampering does happen but it's not most olive oil.

Should be Grassy, bitter and peppery in throat. However, turns out it's bad with almost any food alone. The places where I've found it to work is tomato-based sauces and well seasoned chicken dishes. Boiling it for a while reduces the flavor but also reduces the health benefits. If you pour it on food fresh, it quickly overpowers other flavors.
