how long do these jarred peppers stay good for? I have an open jar in my fridge that's been there for over a month, maybe two. is it safe to use the rest or will I get botulism if I eat them?
>>21980865Have you thought about checking the expiration date?
>>21980869there isn't one anywhere on the label or on the lid
>>21980865if it's a commercial jar it should be safe after only a month of being opened
>>21980865i left an open jar in my parents' fridge in early 2024, just checked on it yesterday, seems to be doing fine. they don't eat spicy food and i developed a stomach or bowel issue that causes me pain 8-12 hours after eaiting it, so since nobody's going to finish it, i'm looking forward to see how long the jar will survive.
>>21980896but how do you know if it's still good? what does botulism look like?
If the jar had botulinum spores in them you'd already have gotten sick from eating them. It's not something you have to worry about growing in your food like bread moldI've used peppers that had been open for a year and they were fine. Granted they were pickled and therefore highly acidic but I used some calabrian chilis in oil months after I opened them and was fine too.
in 1997 i had a birthday gift of one of those enormous jars full of large pickles, the neighbor lady thought it was funnyate on that until i got sick of them. 2 years later we're moving and the jar is still in the fridge, one pickle left, the skin is greyit's incredible, juiciest pickle i've had. nothing happened. magic fridge
>>21980869retard
Honestly month or two is not a very long time and if you were picking the peppers out with a fork and not coming into direct contact with the peppers/brine with your filthy fingers you should be fine
>>21980903You can't see botulism. Botulism only grows when there's no oxygen and when it's not acidic enough. It would just get moldy. If it smells fine and there's no mold it's likely fine, these things are usually processed to give them a very long shelf life.
If you're wary, toss it. If you have a day off, try a teaspoon and wait a while. Then you eat it teaspoon by teaspoon for another few months to be sure.
oh shit, this actually reminded me that I have a jar of Jimmy Peppers in the back of my fridge that I purchased on November 30th, 2021 and opened December 21, 2021 according to my records. I should probably throw them out tomorrow morning, fuck.
>>21980865i have your answer OP since i had literally the same question. i've bought this exact brand a couple of times, the jar on the left, because i like putting this shit on my eggs. last time i did so i got sick and 'rrheal so i checked the eggs and they were good then i checked the chili jar and sure enough there was a white spot in there which looked like mold.given that it's chili peppers stored in oil i didn't assume it could just mold like that so quickly. i had that jar for maybe a month tops upon discovering the mold and only kinda got 3/4 the way through it, whereas the jar i had before it i got all the way through it no issue. i scraped that jar clean and bought the next one.since i'm not that conscious of not cross-contaminating jar with the same butter knife i use for toast i assumed that it was just mold from bread crumbs getting in there. so i twisted the jar shut and put it back in my fridge. it's been 3 months since then and i just opened it now since i saw this thread and yes the shit goes moldy and bad very quickly.so i guess my takeaway is this:mold can hide itself very easily in loose chunky sauces like this, so if you suspect you see even a little, throw it outdon't be lazy and cross contaminate it with your butter knife i guess? put only clean things into it. it's not like it's that hard to wash an extra spoon.don't put the shit in the door. i've been noticing everything in my fridge door goes bad really quickly, especially mayo. mayo always gets me sick, within 5 days. milk never even lasted 5 days if i kept it in the fridge. i turned the fridge temp down a few degrees and started shoving mayo and milk all the way in the back and it holds way longer. i can get through entire jugs of milk and mayo now whereas before i always ended up throwing them out.the door is really just for butter and mustard and various jarred stuff that rarely goes bad.
>>21980970>Jimmy Pepperst. worked at a JJs for a while, and there's a limited amount of ways you can get those so i assume you worked at one too.one thing i can tell you is those peppers don't last more than 3-5 days out of the jar because you're supposed to drain all of the brine immediately and keep the bins drained as well, and a jar can easily fill an entire bin.they get mushy over time once they're drained. if yours are mushy then they're not worth eating. peppers are supposed to have a bite, it's more important than the flavor.we didn't store the peppers unsealed in brine often for obvious reasons. the store goes through them too quickly for them to go bad, but in slow periods they would. but if i ever did find someone stored an opened jar of peppers in brine i usually drained it and topped off the bin. it usually pissed me off finding a pepper jug in my cold storage. it wastes fridge space being in that giant ass jug when you can easily jam them into your active bin, and seeing a jug half drained in there just feels like someone did half of their work and left the rest for me.another other thing i can tell you is they can last fucking forever dry on a shelf as long as you don't crack the seal. we'd sometimes get those delivered leaking because the seal was cracked and my preferred action there was to drain and use them immediately.last thing i can tell you is the five digit number on the lid is the pack date. it's in the canadian format, so "23325" would mean "packed on the 233rd day of 2025."thank you for rtead bnyu blogh
>>21981761Wow, very interesting anon! I've always had good experiences with JJ employees, they're super chill and it's one of the only fast food places that hasn't fucked up a single order of mine.I never worked there, just ordered the jar alongside a sandwich. Paid $18.99 for the Jimmy Peppers and $9.04 for an 8" Hunter Club with double roast beef back in 2021, inflation is a bitch.>here's the top of mine
>>21980865they last practically forever in a fridge. my parents have a jar of peppers they've been picking out of for years
>>21981778i think i recall seeing a deactivated menu button for "jimmy peppers (jar)" in our system but i didn't know any store actually sold those jugs. i assume they wouldn't be a very hot seller outside of catering. i think that's the reason they're there, strictly a catering upsell. they taught us to upsell hard and catering is where you could easily wring an extra 20-40 bucks out of someone just by asking.i took my pepper jar home after bleaching it to get the stains and stench out and it is now where i keep all my taco bell sauce packets.i have JJ stuff all over the place. there was a time they tried to change their french bread recipe and it was such a fucking disaster they backpedaled it immediately. i have one of those french bread boxes, think it proudly said "new french bread" or something. i have an entire roll of pickle jar stickers, from before the times where you could just order JJs branded plastic jugs that said pickles on it, you had to order generics and stick a pickle jar sticker on it. i have a lil' lunch box which is where i store my weed & weed accessories. i have like 15 fucking 5 gal pickle buckets in my shed for gardening.then there's some employee perks stuff, i have a bunch of JJ's branded ping pong balls, a stack of JJ's branded plastic cups, JJ beer cozies. less impressive i also have several grey poupon dijon jars, including one of those miniature ones when someone fucked up and ordered the mini ones. while they're less meaningful, they mean something to me, because JJs are such cheap cowards these days they no longer even offer grey poupon anymore. they swapped it for disgusting sysco yellow mustard.if you ever want a steady flow of free buckets for some reason check a JJs dumpster. they toss like 3 a week. only pick opened ones cus the worst that'll be in there is some vinegar and pickle seeds. if it's sealed and heavy then it most likely contains the juicy smelly contents of their grease trap.
>>21981678>>21981761good posts
I didn't see any mold so I used the peppers to make my sketti. if it looks like I'm dying someone call me an ambulance.
>>21980970>according to my recordsexcuse me?
>>21981806I'll keep the free bucket tip in mind, with the way prices are going up these days I might need one to buy anything substantial in cash >found the receipt lmao>>21981878wut? I have a list on my phone of everything in my refrigerator/freezer along with when I purchased it, when it expires, when I opened it, etc. It's handy since I cook frequently and it helps me reduce food waste and know what options I have at any given time. I thought this was pretty bog standard stuff, no?
