i paid 3,80 euro for an onigiri today. it was tasty but i think it costed too much. i bought in in a garden. it was my first japanese food. there also were some other options but they required chopsticks and i never wielded one so i didnt want to embarrass myself.
>>21996620>costedno other word in the esl lexicon brings my blood to a boil more than this
>>21996621sorry anon am german
Onigiri is simply not that interesting honestly, even in Japan (where at least they're cheap, around 1 IIRC)
>>21996639*1 euro
>>21996639what's the most interesting japanese food for you
>>21996621Sorry it bringed you so much pain
>>21996643For me, I'd say gohan (版) is up there
>>21996643In terms of "stuff that don't really exist in other cuisines", I would say sushi and okonomiyaki
>>21996620Japanese food isn't really popular in Europe for a reason. It's a bit of a meme and just a waste of time, Americans deem to like it though but the rest of the world just thinks it's an over hyped Canapé - which it is.
>>21996620>oni = demon>giri = cutonigiri is the bit of rice you cut off from the bowl to appease demons and stave off curses. it is not meant to be consumed by humans.
>>21996620Good on you for trying out new foods, for me chopsticks are easier to use if I remember to hold them far apart, makes it really difficult if they’re too close together
>>21996643I've never had eel so I'd like to try their grilled eel some day.
>>21996624>germanEnd yourself brown.
>>21997506>ending yourself brownJumping into a latrine?
>>21996621Whenever I open a thread and the first post is the exact same thought I had myself I'm reminded that there is nothing original or interesting or unique about me.
>>21997484yeah I had a similar thought the other day in a british food thread with jellied eels. in the US eel is about as common as horse.>>21997693yeah I mean if your first response to a thread about food is to come in and complain about spelling and grammar you are a macro brain npc
>>21997708Well the thing is, at least as far as I know, modern brits don't really eat jellied eels anymore. It was just a temporary fad from when their river(s) were overflowing with eels.Whereas the japanese-style grilled/barbecued eel skewers are still pretty popular in japan afaik.
>>21997726Jellied eel can still be found in traditional restaurants and they sell commercial jellied eels at many supermarkets in England. But I've lived in 4 states in the US and I haven't even seen eel one time. It may as well be unicorn. You can't even buy it online. It's very weird. I can buy raw alligator online from 1400 miles away but not 1 (ONE) place sells raw eel? Bizarre.
>>21997484tried grilled eel at the Tokyo fish market and it was probably the best one I ever had
>>21996650>For me, I'd say gohan (版) is up there...Nigga, "gohan" just means "meals". And 版 is the kanji for prints - as in printed paper/books/plates/etc.Are you retarded?
>>21996621Pointing and screaming at common typos or misspellings that fluent english speakers make just outs you as an ESL yourself because you are unfamiliar with anything but academic textbook-style speech from lesson drills. Same goes for overreacting to common slang terms as if they are not intentional.
>>21996828First-year learner? It actually breaks down into>on - sound>igi - objection>ri - logicAnd refers to how onigiri are meant to be eaten in silent meditation. It's total wabi-sabi stuff, I wouldn't expect a beginner to get it.
>>21997829I just dunk them in ranch.
>>21997778gohan literally means cooked white rice but it's used as slang for meals in general since white rice is the default meal of japan
>>21997842Sounds bland.
>>21997844I know its oft repeated at this point but eating food with extreme salt and fat content constantly really does desensitize your taste. If you eat bland food for a few weeks you will get used to it and foods that used to seem flavorless become pretty flavorful.
>>21997862A fine point in principle but you can't use it to gaslight anyone into thinking that plain white rice is anything but bland.
>>21997867I eat a very bland diet, I don't even use spices. White rice is fine. I'd prefer oats but salted white rice has a perfectly fine flavor and I would have no problem eating a bowl of it for a meal, other than the lack of nutrition.
>>21997874>I eat a very bland diet, I don't even use spices>white rice is fineIf that's your diet then your opinion on what's bland or flavorful is worthless. It would be like hearing someone who only eats tv dinners try to comment on ingredient quality.
>>21996620>in in a gardenHuh? Also anon you know you can eat sushi with your hands right? It isn't bad etiquette.
>>21996620>and i never wielded oneIt's easier than you'd think, if you can make the "live long and prosper" hand sign, you're halfway there.Practice with some takeaway sushi pieces and disposable chopsticks.
>>21997888What a flawed argument. I haven't eaten a bland diet my entire life. I know extensively what spices and grease taste like. And I know what a diet loaded in them does to the palate.
>>21997899picrel is how the guide is telling to hold them note that you must brace the top stick with your whole finger, if you hold it by just your fingertip it WILL NOT WORK
>>21997911>>21997899this picrel is how I usually hold them there are actually lots of different ways to hold chopsticks, and some are better for certain kinds of chopsticks (korean vs japanese vs chinese chopsticks are all different, in picrel i'm holding chinese chopsticks)
>>21997484It's worth it, pretty tasty
>>21997874do you at least season your rice?
>>21997919I do a pinch of sugar and rice vinegar depending on what Im eating it with. The sugar is mostly just to clump it up and doesn't really affect the taste. I like this kind for chicken. If I'm making eggs over rice I don't do this and just use salt.
>>21996620bruh these are like 138 yen
>>21997906>so you think the guy who says he never uses spices and only eats bland food doesn't have a good opinion on flavor?>well, I'll have you know that I never eat bland foods so I do have a good opinion on flavor! That's not even an argument at all.
>>21996621EOPs are seriously so cringe
>>21997829nah i was just making shit up for teh lulz. your post is cool and informative tho.
>>21998099Are you a mental retard? I said that in the past I have eaten "flavorful" food. I don't even know what you're trying to say at this point because you're arguing with yourself.
>>21998107I'm saying that the guy here >>21997874who explicitly says he eats a "very bland diet" and doesn't even use spices is not a good source on any opinion related to flavor. You say that's a flawed argument because you yourself have never eaten a bland diet in your life and you have a great opinion on flavor. These two do not connect, unless you are actually the guy I originally replied to and you massively fucked up the wording of the post I shat on.
>>21998104Nah, yours was funnier, I was just copying you. It's actually broken down into>o - noun prefix making the word sound fancier (look up bikago)>nigiri - fist/squeeze/pressSo it refers to how the onigiri is pressed into shape by hand. Same word as nigiri sushi.
>>21997928>>21997874these are the kind of niggas that say pepper is too spicy
recently saw some young chick eat one of these over a trashcan, outside of a jap. grocery store, and it looked sad. she tore the seaweed and everything. guess she was in a rush.
