I just bought some smoked salmon and bagels I want to try lox do i only need cream cheese with it? Ive been seeing online people do dill, red onion and capers but idk what the traditional way to do it is or what taste best

Thats what I was thinking they opened a synagogue in my town a year ago so now all the grocery stores have jewish sections in the international aisle so im just trying new stuff im pescatarian. I wanna try matzo ball soup too at some point ive never been around jewish people before I live in Georgia and theres jewish community now in town so I wanna try new stuff

Dill does go well with it, but not necessary. The sharpness of the onion and sourness of the capers is nice. You could chop or slice up some spicy dills and check the same boxes.

Cream cheese and capers are essential IMO.

Tomato, red onion or pickled onion, and dill are nice upgrades.

If you don't have at least the cream cheese you wil get flavor fatigue from the smoked salmon in my experience.

I could eat smoked salmon as is until it killed me. On some chewy rye with some butter... it does need a pinch of sour - lemon, sour cream, capers, pickles, even balsamic or a splash of malt vinegar.
If I'm eating on bread or toast or bagels, it's rare that I'd eat enough to get tired of it, but I find that something with some firmness (toasting the bread/bagel, raw onion), something sharp (onion, caper, hot pepper), and something sour (lemon, vinegar of some kind, pickles) do help it a lot.
