Any recipe I've seen didn't bother with weights or even volumes on the butter - just a "thick slice" or a "knob" (Difford's specifically calls for a knob of butter). Anything more than a tablespoon per is a little too rich for me and I have to start adding citrus.

How Much Butter! is still very much the question; Anons the dish is some popular recipe site's version of: HOT BUTTERED RUM!

Mid-1600s: Rum production explodes in the Caribbean as a byproduct of sugar (molasses). Colonists in North America, especially New England, get access to cheap rum through the triangular trade.
Late 1600s: Colonists begin mixing rum with hot water, spices, and sweeteners to make it more palatable and warming in brutal winters.
Early 1700s: Butter gets added. Why? Calories, flavor, and practicality. Colonial diets leaned heavily on dairy fats, and butter helped turn a rough drink into something almost like a dessert.
