i am brewing some really small scale stuff (basically in my kettle), but how do i extract flavour from hops with kitchen equipment? i tired last time to cook them for a long time, but that didn't yield much earthy flavour.Did i miss something?
>>22003500>kettleYou already ruined it
>>22003500There's bittering hops and aromatic hops. To get the bittering properties of hops it needs to be cooked with the wort for an extended amount of time. That won't impart much aroma though. For the aromatics you should only add it relatively late or dry hop (add hops to the carboy while fermenting).Usually many hop heavy beer recipes will use cheap bittering hops and then add more expensive aroma hops as a finish.
You boil for 1 h if you want to extract the bitterness, 10 min if you want the flavor or 0 min if you want the aroma (just add to boiling liquid and take off the heat). You'll probably want on the order of 0.1% hops per liquid weight for a decently strong flavor.
