Overrated, conspicuous consumption, or yummy?
seems pretty overrated to me, tastes like shit too
>>22008942How do you feel about mushrooms?
>>22008945In general? I don't really like them, have tried truffles and truffle oil on stuff and it just tasted bad to me. Pretty much the only form I like are the cream of mushroom soup in a greenbean casserole or maybe in a cheesesteak.
Truffles are v. Yummy
>>22008935Black truffles aren't that expensive when you buy them in season. And you don't need a lot of it.
>>22008935the whites are better
I've only had truffle paste on pizza but it was quite memorable. Even the aroma they gave off whilst I was putting the pizza inside of my mouth was quite unique.
>>22008935taste like potting soil, don't ask how I know.
Yum, dirty chestnut.
>>22008954I love mushrooms
I never had a truffle. Love mushrooms of all kinds except for maitake but I'm too poor for truffles. I've had truffle oil fries but they don't taste good. I know the oil isn't made from real truffles which is why it tastes bad.
Truffles are a scam for rich people like gold flakes on a steak are a scam
>>22009078They were extremely popular even before WWI made them such a luxury
>>22009078>poorfag copeReal winter truffles are excellent. The cheap shit and fake oils are trash.
Morels are betterAnd the price is what makes it overrated, they’re a perfectly yummy mushroom
>>22009108Morels don't have nearly same aroma/taste as truffles. Morels are still delicious tho.
>>22008935all of the above. they are great, but overrated/not worth their cost, and the most common use case is conspicuous consumption
>>22009330They were reasonably cheap, before two rounds of world boogaloo obliterated 70-something % of the forests where they grew. And post-war urban sprawl prevented said forests from being replanted.
>>22008935>moliterno al tartufo
>>22009399>ReplantedTruffles aren't planted you dummy. They're a completely wild fungus. That's why they're so expensive.
>>22009399Old french recipes use obscene amounts of truffles. It's quite remarkable.
>>22008935love em. simple as.They're one of those "overly expensive foods" that's actually worth it. Anyway, they're not that expensive and you don't need much of it.Compare that to something like caviar which is just salty.
>>22008935It definitely has a very distinct flavor.I do not enjoy it.My best friend and his sister love it.It seems like maybe the price is fair, considering how annoying it is to get out of the ground. Also a lot of people in this thread seem to think of truffles as a mushroom you eat as an ingredient while it's not used that way. It's used as an aromatic.
>>22009511caviar is rich, savory, and flavorful—not simply salty.
>>22008965Yeah, we know. What do you think about truffles though?
>>22008935overrated. It works well with some things, mostly as a spice, but when I see "haute cuisine" put slices and slices of it into everything to inflate the price it's just stupid bullshit.
>>22008935White truffles are amazing, have never not enjoyed a dish with those. Black truffles are significantly more hit or miss. The fresh black truffles I had in Wales were really good, but when I eat shipped over black truffles in a restaurant I tend to not like them as much. Still good, though.
>>22009511Caviar rules, man. There’s so many different varieties with subtle differences, too.
>>22009414truffles are a special mushroom, they're ectomycorrhizal, meaning they form a mutually beneficial partnership with tree roots. No forests, no truffles.
>>22009117Where did i say they tasted similar? They’re simply better for the price they are.
>>22008935I'm convinced they know how to farm this shit but big pig is suppressing it.
