I'm trying to brew my own coffee at home, cheap but reasonably tasty. Should I just go with a Mr. Coffee pot and a cheap grinder? Or should I actually look into a french press?

Just use a gallon-sized measuring cup, a kettle and a sock. Boil kettle of water. Pour over the grinds in the measuring cup. Stir. Steep. Stir again. Pour through the sock, back into the kettle. Serve.
People overcomplicate coffee unnecessarily.

Go with a kettle and a v60 brewer with some filters. Its not as cheap as a french press but its goiny to help you learn and build technique to express flavors

Just get a Mr. Coffee pot and a tin of Cafe Du Monde French Roast and you're good to go. Don't over complicate it or you become one of the weird coffee cultists that dwell in the general on here.

the most popular coffee in the world is instant. why are you so picky?

You should get a good grinder.

Stale coffee grounds and an uneven coffee grind particle size are what produce sour and/or bitter coffee, do not use a blade grinder, an electric burr grinder is mandatory, they can be had for $70-100 new.
Ideally you also want recently roasted small batch coffee but that's bougie shit desu, supermarket coffee roasted ages ago is also fine as long as it's whole bean and isn't exposed to oxygen.
Grind only what you're gonna use right away, after opening a new bag, vacuum seal the unused beans in mason jars to prevent staling as much as possible, some people go to the point of freezing unused coffee beans but that's too autistic for me.

I blend my coffee beans in a normal blender and then pour through a filter into a cup
Maybe I'm a tastelet but I don't think there's any reason to do more than that
