That's why alcoholics love it.There are plenty of bad Cognacs, and basically, if you purchase anything cheaper than Hennessy or Courvoisier, at $30+/- a bottle, you are likely getting Cognac that will taste awful. Remy Martin XO is very good, but costs more than $120 a bottle. In contrast, there are plenty of affordable Bourbons, (Old Grandad Bonded is an example), that are much better than cheap cognac. As for Vodka, kegslly some states used to restrict any mention of “flavor”, since vodka is technically just supposed to be neutral ethanol, that has been filtered and distilled properly. “Better” Vodkas, are usually distilled multiple times to remove higher degrees of trace chemicals like Methanol, and also filtered thru charcoal and quartz for the same reasons. Ultra pure vodka should not leave the drinker with a hangover when drinking vodka alone or with just water, and that is the reason alcoholics drink vodka. (It’s sort of the alcoholic version of eating basic simply foods).

Even if you learn to like it or whatever, it still pretty much always tastes far better mixed, where it elevates whatever it's used in, rather than being something you go out of your way to drink straight.
