I'm new to the oatmeal meta what the heck is steel cut oatmeal and is it any different from regular oatmeal?

regular oatmeal is pressed between rollers to flatten the grains which makes them a bit pastier once cooked, steel cut just has them chopped up so they have a firmer texture more like brown rice

whole grain oats take 45+ mins to cook
steel cut takes 20+ minutes to cook
old fashioned takes like 3 to 5 minutes
instant takes like 60 seconds

whole grain oats and steel cut oats are raw and should not be eaten without cooking. old fashioned (rolled oats) and instant oats (rolled oats that have been pulverized) are cooked during manufacturing so can be eaten from the package without cooking like overnight oats.

it differs by being completely undigestible by the human body

>it differs by being completely undigestible by the human body
it gets digested by the bacteria living in your colon

Steel cut are groats (raw oats) that have been cut coarse. They haven't been steamed and rolled. Fine ground oats are what as known as Scottish oats.

The recipe for THE ultimate savory oatmeal.
>1 C pinhead oats (AKA steel cut oats)
>4 C water
>4 oz cheese of choice
>1 T Marmite
>2 T chili garlic paste (adjust to taste)
Boil the water. Add the oats, stir, turn the heat on medium. Cook for thirty minutes, stirring every ten minutes to reduce sticking. Once cooked to your desired consistency, stir in the Marmite, cheese, and chili sauce. Delicious. I've made this probably hundreds of times.

some people won't be able to digest it well, others won't have any trouble with it.

The internet and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

I don't know what's going on between oat varieties, but the steelcut type I buy only takes about twice as long as old fashioned when done in a sauce pan.

Sounds good. I just use salt/pepper and either nutritional yeast or some parmesan.

nigga basically made risotto with oats
you may as well use stock instead of water if youre going savory anyway

Rolled oats + milk + honey is all you will ever need.

well it's a matter of preference but if you want them soft it takes like 20 minutes. at 10 they'll be edible but still firm. people normally want them softer so that's what I say as a guideline.
