Op is actually right. White cheddar is normal cheddar. Orange cheddar was originally dyed to look that way because back in the day slightly orange cheese had or was viewed to have more nutrients and was more valuable. So farmers dyed their cheddar orange to make it seem better and solid sell at a higher price. Then it caught on and cheddar was just known from then on as being an orange cheese. It doesn't taste any different.
