They say it's "naturally flavored," no clue if that's true or not but it's definitely not as overpowering a flavor as triple sec or curacao

>Surprised at the knob creek smoked maple
I'm not. That shit is disgusting. It was like 5 years ago when I bought it and if I wasn't so poor/alkie at the time I'd have poured it out, and I almost never pour out any alcohol
>>
>>22153244
>>22153251
I actually really, really like the Knob Creek Smoked Maple. I have never liked another flavored whiskey but I like it a lot.
I like smoke and I like maple. Yes, it's sweet. I like sweet things.
>>
>>22153267
I like sweet things too, but whiskey should not taste like syrup. More power to you though
>>
>>22153251
Only booze I've ever poured out was a HEAVILY sulfured Glenmorangie Nectar D'or. From sulfur candles. Rotten eggs. Fucking nasty.
Even mixing with Laphroaig didn't cover it up.
>>
>>22153271
I mean, it's 90 proof so it's considerably less syrupy than your average 70 proof flavored whiskey.
But yes it is quite sweet. I don't think of it as whiskey as much as I think of it as something I like the flavor of.
>>
>>22152265
Trying to get into peaty shit, started with the basic options because that's what the bar next door had. (Laphroaig 10 and Lagavulin 16).
Lagavulin has a genuinely pretty bottle (I like the pill shaped label thing their designers came up with) but too smooth and not peaty enough (and I hate their Offerman bullshit and don't want to reward it). Laphroaig was good, I like the iodine+smoke combination.
Now, what can I get that is like Laphroaig 10, but NCA, NCF and ideally from an independent distiller without all the corporate special release/limited edition/travel exclusive bullshit? (The strength I don't have that much preference for, Laphroaig's 40 was good enough for me.)
>>
>>22153300
Kilchoman Machir Bay.
>>
>>22153311
Why NAS though?
>>
>>22153324
Age is not necessarily a desirable thing with heavily-peated whiskies. Age blunts the peatiness.
I prefer Machir Bay to Laphroaig 10.
>>
>>22153324
>>22153372
Also, Machir Bay has a lovely citrus (tastes kind of how lemon oil smells) note to it which specifically comes from the young whisky in it.
Kilchoman's own marketing mentions the citrus note, so the inclusion of young whisky to add that note is obviously intentional. The whisky has the flavor profile that is desired by Kilchoman, and the inclusion of the young whisky is necessary to obtain that flavor profile.
>>
>>22153372
I agree with you, but I'd rather the distillery tell me if it's 6,8, 10Y or something higher.
>>
>>22153376
Let's say, hypothetically, most of that whisky is around 10 years old, but they intentionally include some, even a small amount, of three or four year old whisky in it in order to add/enhance that citrus note.
If they were to give it an age statement, it'd need to say three or four years old.
At this point, it becomes a marketing decision. Do they feel they will sell more whisky by giving it a 3-4 year age statement, or by going NAS?
I would assume that almost any company would decide the latter. I would assume that almost any company would not have any confidence that consumers would be sophisticated enough to realize:
>the potential value in adding some young whisky to older whisky
>the relatively lesser importance of age for a heavily peated whisky compared with other whisky
Ardbeg was brave as FUCK to release Wee Beastie with a five year age statement. I can't say that was wise. It was brave and morally upstanding, but I can't say it was wise business.
>>
>>22153388
Yeah I guess you do have a point. I suppose the really honest way for an Islay distillery would be to respect the rules and give the youngest as the top line age statement, but elsewhere on the bottle release the full bill a-la:
> 4% 5 Y/o, Refill Sherry, French Oak
> 20% 8 Y/o Refill Bourbon, American Oak
etc
But I am not sure anyone in the scotch business does that, that would be almost "open source cola" territory.
>>
>>22153397
Yeah I can't see that level of transparency being beneficial from a business perspective.
>>
>>22152672

>It was brave and morally upstanding, but I can't say it was wise business.
Honestly I think it makes perfect sense. Basically, if you want to try Ardbeg, you'd want to try the 10 or An Oa first to get a sense of if you like the brand and what they do.
On that topic, I feel like An Oa is massively underrated and basically comes off as a lighter Uigeadail/Corryvrekan, which I find greatly agreeable.
Wee Beastie's marketing is clear, this is the stuff you buy if you specifically want something strong and not too 'tamed' by age, so they want people to not buy that first up and go, oh this Ardbeg stuff is thick and harsh as fuck, I'm not bothering with their other stuff, which would likely happen if it just looked like the most cheap and entry level bottle on the shelf.
>>
>>22153612
my problem with the Wee Beastie is partly the price/branding, but also the severe batch quality issues Ardbeg have had in recent years/close to a decade. they priced it only $10 less than a 10 year single malt staple. it needs to be cheaper. they capitalized on the boom. maybe now they'll do a Wee Beastie cask strength or a sequel to Ardbeg Blaaack. LVMH doesnt seem to do much finishing with red wine. Probably better to go the independent bottler route for that stuff anyway the price would be stupid.
>>
Wee Beastie was my first peated scotch and I thought it was pretty good
>>
>>22153687
my first heavily peated Islay single malt was Ardbeg 10. while it was unique, once I tried Laphroaig I was confident I was a fan.

OK just checked Total Wine here in Texas. 190 proof Everclear is $31.99 for a handle.
That's absolutely not more cost effective than a $10 handle of 80 proof vodka.
The equivalent amount of alcohol in the form of 80 proof vodka would be valued at $23.75 assuming a $10 handle.

Same in Germany. That shit is used for extracts or self-made liqueurs so they know people have to/will pay for it.
The cheapest vodka is also rectified to the legal maximum (far beyond 90%) and just watered down so it shouldn't be more expensive. Not even alcohol tax which is calculated by abv. justifies the price if you relate it to regular swill.

Late reply. I've had several drams of it and have tried to give it a fair, thorough evaluation.
So, this Nikka Whisky From the Barrel is just not my thing. I like big, bold flavors. This does not have them.
It's quite delicate for 51.4 percent alcohol. It's the kind of whisky NPCs will taste and go "OMG IT'S SO SMOOOOOOOOOOOOTH FOR 51 PERCENT."
I've read people describe it as sherry-forward and it's absolutely not. It's closest to a delicate bourbon barrel-aged Speyside or even Lowlands. Just a teeny, tiny, barely fucking there wisp of peat smoke.
Supertasters may like this more than I do. Supertasters may taste something different in every sip because it's literally a blend of over 100 whiskies.
I just taste weak ex-bourbon barrel flavor and extremely weak peat smoke. I am not a supertaster, nor am I a smoker.
I don't think it tastes bad. I like how it tastes. It has a pleasant, if weak vanilla/slightly fruity sweetness to it with a hint of smoke. I'm enjoying the dram I'm having of it right now.
It's not something I'll buy again. Give me an intensely flavorful sherry bomb or peat bomb over this any day of the week.
>>
>>22157235
Also the bottle fucking sucks and it's challenging to only pour whisky in the glass.

Am I poorfag coping or just not the right age or is single source rarely all that good compared to a nice blend?
Like I totally understand doing this with grape or fruit distillate where you might choose stuff from a single hill but grain enters the fermenter already so emulsified it feels performative.
>>
>>22159354
>blends
some arent bad, but blends are heavily diluted and packaged as cheap as possible, so the blend is not that nice considering even a basic single malt mid shelfer is going to be a large step up in purity of flavor so long as you dont go drowning it with ice or mixing with coke.

This Dettling is actually pretty good. The chocolate malt they use in the mash bill gives it a nice chocolatey, almost leathery note that goes really nicely with the rye spices, while the oats give it a nice body. My initial impression was that the oats and specialty malts imparted a little too much of a “crafty” flavor, but I’ve grown to like it.

Overall, I’m honestly pretty happy I purchased this 6-year rye for $300 + shipping. It's somewhat overpriced but you can't get this anywhere else.

if u like semisweet chocolate n unsweetened black coffee, you will likely love dettling
Dettling is fun but pretty one-note so its hard to grow and try new things with them
>>
Just made a martini and I tell you what, this is entirely too much gin. Think I'm sticking to whiskey.
>>
>>22161028
Dry Martinis are the cocktail with the most unwarranted prestige. There' so much more interesting stuff you can make with gin.
>>
>>22161028
The Martini is just an excuse to drink pure gin.
>>
On a related note I never quite understood the Old Fashioned either unless you A. Don’t like the taste of whisky but B. Want to drink a full glass of it for some reason
>>
>>22161028
>>22161446
"""dry martinis""" where you just add an unnoticable drop of vermouth are a modern retardation, traditional martinis are supposed to be like 2 parts gin to one part vermouth

also, gin and tonic is kind of better tbqh
>>
>>22161451
They taste good. What's to understand?
That's like saying you don't understand toast with butter and jam unless you don't like bread but want to eat an entire slice of it for some reason.

total whisky noob here. what should I try if I had these:
>Jim Beam White
not bad with ice, kind of tastes like vanilla ice cream. kind of harsh without ice
>Evan Williams Black Label
definitely better than the Jim Beam, more flavorful and thicker
>Jim Beam Black 7 Year
like a slightly better version of the Evan Williams. more nutty and maybe thicker
>Johnnie Walker Black Label
my favorite so far. I like the slightly smoky flavor and it's very mellow and easygoing
>Monkey Shoulder
fruity kind of like pear. chocolaty, peppery. not bad but maybe not a favorite/
>Tullamore DEW
heavy on the green apple. green apple in caramel. slightly harsh, but the distinct flavor profile is fun, it's like eating candy
>>
>>22161464
Kind of. Some it is very good, and the mizunara and umeshu casks used impart some pretty unique flavors, but prices literally doubled a few years back when it got popular, no longer buy.
>>
>>22161477
Try some of the bottle in bond bourbons, Old Grand Dad, Dickel, etc. Cheapish, good, a step up in intensity from all of those.
>>
>>22161477
Try a Scotch with medium peat. Port Charlotte 10 is a good choice. It says heavily peated, but it's medium. The peat and the oak are really well balanced and it's a fantastic babby's first substantially peated whisky.
>>
>>22160687
No that would be stupid and wasteful.

>>22160779
I agree that dettling hits those flavor notes. But I think they have a lot of potential once they start putting out stuff sgef longer than 4-6 years
>>
>>22161477
>$20-$30 tier
Wild Turkey 101, Old Grandad 114, Knob Creek
>$40-$50 tier
Russell's Reserve, Rare Breed, Four Roses Small Batch Select, Old Forester 1920

Been drinking less Whisky of late since its not as pleasant to drink during the hot summer months. My house decanter I fill up with the Kirkland 12 year blended scotch. Pretty good for the price an excellent game night or well rounded dinner scotch for the colder months.

I’m going to second George Dickel, specifically bottled in bond. There’s a few variations but commonly it’s 13 year. It should range from $30 to $45 (typically closer to the lower end of the range) it would be a new flavor profile as it has the aged bourbon notes. Severely underrated probably because the name evokes “penis”.

I also feel like if you like JW black you should like it. Instead of minor peat it’s aged oak but they kind of play the same role in rounding out the flavor

Is the "Flintstone vitamin" mineral flavor thing with Dickel a meme? I've never had it

DAMN this is a great rye (Middle West Dark Pumpernickel).
>>
>>22161733
I think it does have some merit. In my opinion less so in the aged dickels which the BiB is. To me it comes across more like the water they use has a limestone minerality to it…which I’m pretty sure is literally the case hence the flavor. “Some “merit because I think there is a distillery characteristic that leans towards it, but it’s more of a meme. It’s not that dominant of a note and sometimes unnoticeable unless you convince yourself which is what I think people do

Had another lil drinkypoo of some rare perfection 10 (batch 7) tonight. It's really good, like drinking syrupy cherry leather and oak with an amazing finish.

my dumb friend calls it pickle juice. some just have overly sensitive pussified broken mouths. like the subhumans that cant enjoy cilantro because it tastes "like soap."
sucks to be them
>>
>>22161493
Not that available here in the EU, closest we get to cheap 50% bourbon is Wild Turkey 101 (costs more than Johnnie Black, but I might buy it at some point)
>>22161558
Yeah that's what I've been thinking of. Maybe Talisker 10 or Highland Park too, those are not too expensive
>>22161666
I'll check if it's available here
>>
>>22161633
I've been drinking gin and tonics instead. Perfect refreshing cocktail that takes no effort to make and actually has some flavor complexity to it
Doesn't even need fancy gin, perfectly nice with some Beefeater
>>
>>22162607
>Maybe Talisker 10 or Highland Park too, those are not too expensive

Those are both good starting points for getting into peated whisky. Port Charlotte is excellent, and as anon mentioned it's not that heavily peated compared to Laphroaig or Ardbeg, but it's still an Islay, and those have certain characteristics you may not like compared to other peated scotch.
>>
>>22162607
>Maybe Talisker 10 or Highland Park too
No, those are bad.
>>
>>22162960
They're Diageo shit, so filtered and colored, bit they're good intros to non-Islay peated scotch. Are we gonna go tell this guy to go get independent bottlings of Mortlach or Ardmore? I mean,ok, but he's not gonna have that available.
>>
NTA but Talisker 10 was my first tru love
>>
>>22162639
>Port Charlotte is excellent... but it's still an Islay, and those have certain characteristics you may not like compared to other peated scotch.
One thing that stood out to me about Port Charlotte was its lack of "weird" or "off" notes you'll find in other Islays like the vegetal/iodine/bandaid notes.
It's pretty much just straightforward smoke and oak in a 50/50 balance.
Talisker has more "weird" or "off" notes than PC and Highland Park is just weak relatively flavorless garbage.
>>
>>22162429
I think Wild Turkey 101 Rye tastes like pickle juice, in a good way.
It's obviously not sour like pickle juice, but it absolutely has some flavors in it that are similar to the spices found in pickle juice.
The pickle juice comparison is a common one for many rye whiskies, and some people aren't using it as an insult to the whiskey.
>>
>>22162979
We know, Diageo shill. You used to spam threads about it until you got banned a billion times for it.
>>
>>22162983
>One thing that stood out to me about Port Charlotte was its lack of "weird" or "off" notes you'll find in other Islays like the vegetal/iodine/bandaid notes.
To me this is just the bruichladdich characteristic. Basically all of their stuff is good but they have this “perfectly machined” feel to their products. It’s a positive and a negative. It’s most obvious in their gin actually, botanist. They have all these meme botanicals and the end result is quite balanced but it lacks any big unique notes. Because these are spirits and not say, furniture, I appreciate their style.

Because imo it’s easier and lazier to be unique but poorly made rather than uniform but well made. Both are better than uniform and poorly made obviously
>>
>>22163060
How funny you mention their gin. A friend of mine who doesn't know anything about scotch brought it to a D&D session I was at. It was good (for gin, which I hate)
>>
>>22162995
I’ve never once been banned on /ck/ and am not affiliated with diageo in any way shape or form. That being said, Talisker 10 is a great entry point into the world of whisky and a bottle that I recommend to anyone
>>
>>22163060
Yeah I opened a bottle of Bruichladdich 18 for my birthday this summer and my thoughts are similar. I can understand their philosophy is all about “burning local” and being eco friendly and all that good stuff but it just results in a very basic flavor profile. You really need to be an extreme whisky purist to fully appreciate it

my old fashioneds are more like seasoned whiskey
i'm far beyond the stage of wanting to taste everything neat every single time
if you were talking about whiskey sours then yeah, that's a fair assessment. but making an old fashioned you have a lot of variables you can tweak. it's fun
manhattans are godly too. get an expensive bottle of sweet vermouth, a bar spoon, and a clear ice mold, you'll see the light soon enough

my local just got in an Impex bottling of 10 year old cask strength(56.7%) Kilchoman fully matured for 10 years in Olorosso sherry for $129.99+ 10% tax. not sure about that compared to Loch Gorm 10 year at $96.99. I've only had the standard Machir Bay so far, but I also want to try a cask strength Kilchoman and that's rare around here anymore.
>>
>>22162985
The pickle juice flavor is dill you tastelet retard.
>>
>>22164120
I'm sure it's very good and it's getting rave reviews but there's no goddamn way I'm paying $200 for a 10 year old bourbon
