It's infuriating and I blame self-insert fags for this.

Gen 5 seems to be a bit more equal, partly due to the BW series being cut short because of the Fukushima disaster, and partly because fans dig Hilbert and Nate a lot more than say Lucas or (googles name) Calem. I once read a comment that called Hilbert a "honorary fire emblem lord", make of that what you will. The difference is that since SV the female protagonists are dull too because GF has stopped trying altogether.

Not sure if that's true for Nate and Hugh, who might be back to the default of 12 (can't find internal docs for that). Calem and friends were 12, as much as the fanbase pretends otherwise, according to internal docs. Elio and Hau are 11 in both version of Alola, despite the younger-looking design or USUM for Elio. Chase and Trace are likely 11 due to their game being an AU Kanto campaign. Back to vague 12 or 14 for Victor, Hop, and Bede. Rei is 15, oldest confirmed thus far. Florian is presumably 12, but he is contrasted heavily with Kieren who some versions describe as a teen (though it might just be a translation of "rebel phase" which doesn't necessarily mean that Kiera is 13+; both boys definitely feel like they are middle schoolers [i.e. first years/7th graders] and not elementary schoolers like a lot of the other preteen protags above). Urbain is likely 15 or older like the previous Legends protag. I would assume the new boy is in the same vague 12-14 window that most protags slot into unless expressly stated to be younger or older (and usually by just +/- a year [11 or 15]).

The initial ages for characters in Special tends to line up with GameFreak's internal docs, which does make sense as Special's author would have some degree of access to behind the scenes details. The biggest smoking gun for this is that the seemingly outlandish claim that the XY crew were 12 while fans assumed they were ~16. I remember the XY arc getting mocked for claiming that these designs were of preteens and not teens, but it looks like 12 was indeed correct. Again, this is part comes from misunderstanding some context. In the postgame, the character Emma is stated to be 16, and she refers to the MC as senpai/senior, so fans assumed that meant that Calem/Serena (and their friends by extension) were older teens. However, in the great convoluted hierarchy of senpai/kohai, it extends from not just strictly age but also to experience level. Emma refers to the MC as her senior in regards to being an employee of the Looker Bureau, so this is seniority in regards to employment status, not age. Unfortunately, Special has not revealed character ages since the SM Arc, so we can't use it as a guidepost for SwSh and SV MCs.

The default of the customizable MCs is meant to be Asiatic, while the other three are white, black, and all purpose brown.
