A shota is a boy of kindergarten to middle school age (Japanese school system). The debate for the cutoff is if it should be part way through middle school or not (most commonly end of Year 2 aka 8th grade or when a character turns 15). Pre-school and earlier tend to be counted as part of toddlercon, and post cutoff (be it end of Year 2 or 3 of middle school) does not have any fancy terminology to it other than standard teen/high school. I see a lot of people in these threads try to downplay or outright denounce the young teen component of shotacon, despite the fact that the Japanese fanbase that created the term decades ago and supply the lion's share of shota art have never subdivided the term and regularly count younger and older boys as shota. In terms of real-world equivalents, shotacon encompases both pedophilia and hebephilia but does not cover ephebophilia.
