I’m sure that there are a lot of people buying Tia’s merch right now because of fomo, so at least it won’t be impossible to get secondhand in the future. Not that she wouldn’t have sold loads of it anyway, but I know people who have struggled to buy it because they know it’s limited and they won’t get the chance to after she has to take it down. It’s also the closest thing to official RS merch we’re going to get, in the capacity of a ship anyway.

What Spindlehorse had going on was really unprecedented by industry standards, I've literally never heard of another company letting people work on their shows while also selling non canon merchandise. This does cause brand confusion and companies don't like that. Now let's say Viv or Amazon doesn't want the brand identity to be tied up with MM or RS, well, that's hard to mitigate when your artists are drawing/selling it, and your VAs are signing prints of it. And it wasn't just Tia, I can think of half a dozen or more animators who were making big bank off of RS/MM, Batsy comes to for example. And unfortunately there are a few very vocal people out there who will use this as proof that the ship is canon or use language that suggests it. >it's basically canon/as close to canon as we get/etc. So while I don't think this was the 'main' reason, I do think it was a contributing factor, the Black Gryph0n stuff just gave them an excuse. In a way I do understand, because this isn't a unique situation, Amazon has seen the lasting impact that ships can have on brand identity (nodding towards Star Trek and Harry Potter) and didn't want to go that direction. It shuts up a very annoying section of the fandom and gives Amazon's merchandising team full control (oof). And while we were very lucky to have had so many amazing artists grandfathered in with the old merch policies, there was only so long something like that could continue under a major corporation like Amazon. They like squeaky clean brand images, and artists associated with the show who are making suggestive fan art (think Batsy making a pin where Vox is licking Al's neck) with a canonical sexual abuser and his victim doesn't look good to corporate when you also have delulus screaming about it being romantically reciprocal in canon. It's the same reason we're not getting any Val/Angel stuff imo, even though canonically speaking they do have a relationship history. People complain about RA getting merch, but let's be honest, to corporate it's a safe alternative. Brand protection is a massive thing in the industry and it does track, whether we agree with the policies or not.

Nobody wants their equivalent to the MCU being known as the 'problematic' show, and there's been a healthy amount of pushback to how the show handles certain themes, as well as the questionable merch that's been sold (the whole Vox lunchbox thing too). There's a lot of risks with letting the people who work on the show also make fan merch from an IP holder's perspective, making 'problematic' stuff is just one aspect of it. I think going forward we'll see more 'safe' merch from the marketing teams.

Yeah so. I was hoping to say this stuff on better terms, but I've been putting it off. I got a new job. A pretty cool one that involves drawing deer, but I can't talk about it too much. Anyway, because of this and other life stuff I haven't really been able to post much. I mentioned that a while back iirc. Honestly I've been struggling to keep these threads up when they hit bump while also working, and I've been meaning to say goodbye for a while, but out of habit and obligation I've stuck around. But uh...after tonight I think it's honestly better to dip. I'm not an RS shipper. I relate to Al a lot because what he endured was very similar to what I endured for 13 years. Because of this I'm going to have some profoundly different views than most of our regulars who enjoy this content. I think if the show had made the situation more graphic or prolonged it would've triggered me something fierce (but also my threshold for stomaching unsavory content has always been all over the place). It's not a you problem at all, it was a fucked up scene regardless and it being made into a joke really reflects poorly on the show writers themselves. Hell, the Angel gag reel genuinely made me mad and I felt like I was being gaslit by parts of the fandom trying to run defense for Viv doing that shit. The way the show treats SA and rape is awful, and then there’s this general push for purity culture and not being seen to like anything problematic, and so these things get minimised or dismissed in the fandom. What happened to Alastor probably won’t even be brought up again in the show, or have an impact on his character, and he isn’t some innocent damsel who needs protection from evil rape machine Vox. I don’t consider myself an overly sensitive person but some of the things that have been said about that scene elsewhere have hurt because of my own experiences. But as has been said, it’s hard to blame people for treating it as a joke when the show itself treats it as a joke.
