Funny enough, Japanese school kids are just now going on summer vacation.

For the Japanese school year, spring break (late Mar-early Apr) is their equivalent to the US's summer vacation (but two weeks instead of two months) since that's when students rise up between grades or promote to the next level of education. Funny enough, no sooner has the school year started before the next run of holidays at the start of May (Golden Week). Summer vacation marks the end of the first of three semesters in August (the longest break since it runs for most of the month). They hold off to late summer in part so that it lines up with the various local Obon festivals held across the country. The second semester ends with a winter break that typically starts with Christmas but is obviously much more concerned with New Years (so while US winter break does tend to also contain both holidays, many school districts focus on giving some run-way to the lead up for Christmas and then starts schools back up shortly after New Years--Japan does the opposite and gives the first week of the year off almost in full). The first semester is the shortest at basically two and half uninterrupted months and focused on wrapping up the year and preparing for the next school year/graduation.
