I watched a YouTube video of the production hell of Elio and it does make me wonder how the movie would have turned out if Disney had just backed off. Like on one hand shit sounded gay as fuck so I can't imagine it would really get any audience, but on the other hand a reason why old pixar and Renaissance era Disney was so good was because they generally let everyone do their thing and let them get very personal with their stories and production. In my anecdotal evidence Luca I thought was fantastic and I guess they had a lot more freedom on that film.
