>>1500279971) How did this ever get syndicated?2) How does it stay in syndication? Not trying to be a jackass. Sincere questions, given the typical newspaper comics audience.
>>150028885>1) How did this ever get syndicated? It was originally an underground comic in the 70s that saw a rise in popularity, thus getting picked up for newspapers2) How does it stay in syndication?Once you get a syndicated comic you basically make it forever it until either the creator dies, decides to end the comic, or some major controversy causes the strip to be cancelled like Dilbert or Candorville.
>>150028885inertia is a property of matter and also the most powerful force in newspaper comics
>>150029037>Once you get a syndicated comic you basically make it foreverAnd it's not a bad living. Syndicates charge newspapers between $15 and $100 per week for most strips (depending on demand), and pay half of that to the creators. Zippy's in about 200 papers, so even at the low end that means $1400 a week or $72,800 for good old Griffy. Given his cult popularity and longevity, I'd guess the syndicate is paying him more like $20 per paper, or $4,000 per week, or $208,000 per year.I wonder how much Gallagher is getting for Heathcliff. It's in over 1,000 papers, last I checked. It's not a bad gig, if you can get it!

>>150028885If you want my suggestion on how to enjoy Zippy, it's not always easy. But, go check out the old stuff, when the author was younger and his stream of conciousness rambling was a bit more on point. He's in his 80s now. His wife died, (he's actually done a few good Zippy comics about his wife's death that are touching), and he's just old. And so, now, the comic is best appreciated as an art piece I think. He basically draws out architecture he finds interesting and puts a comic around it. He always did this to some extent, but now that's how I think you should best understand Zippy. So, find a good week, and just look at the art and sort of absorb that he's a quite good sketcher.

>>150026923>>150034090I find the modern faces ghastly, particularly when there are teeth involved. But what really blows my brain is that the comic used to look much more traditional.
>>150027537I feel like I'm having a stroke reading the paper story. I assume that the brother left the dog loose in the front yard to work havoc while he went in to take a nap, and the dog went around and un-delivered all the newspapers in the neighborhood. Is it supposed to be hard to parse? Why would they explain that the anonymous protagonist is Fuckface McRib's brother, but not actually say what happened?

>>150032394>Wut?! It was all in Jon's head?Yeah.
>>150027041It's so weird how someone was able to make a comic strip out of such a limited concept. This feels like the occasional running gag of a more general SoL comic, like how Snoopy has his Flying Ace/Writing gimmicks. You'd think they'd run out of material by now, but it's been here as long as I've seen these threads and it's still chugging along. Then again if you can make Marmaduke work for decades, anything's possible.
