You're now remembering the time a fine artist (Proko) tried to draw in a cartoon style and got his ass handed to him. Turns out cartooning is really fucking hard.

It turns out he's decent mainly at technical work and not cartoon styles. Idk if he's a fraud or not, but there's other drama surrounding him but I haven't jumped down that rabbit hole. It is embarrassing that his characters are so ugly and visually unappealing in this, especially those god awful frontal head images. But visual story telling is an art form of itself. Timing, pacing, appeal, panel flow, composition, etc.

It's a little rough, but ultimately harmless. What exactly makes this a crime or is it mostly the drama surrounding whoever this is?

Realism is a specialized skill on one end of the spectrum and simplified abstract cartoon art is another on the other end, both are learned skills that must be refined, it really is hard to do though unless you add in comple animations or perspective it has less of a learning curve.
Why did you make this post though? To feel good about drawing cartoons? Why did you not PYW instead?

The only "crime" here is that Proko is more or less revered as a modern Loomis or Vilppu so his cartoons "should have" looked better

he's not a bad artist because he's not a cartoonist
art is a lot of things

It really goes to show how cartooning involves different skills.
For example, their faces looks inconsistent from different angles, despite "technically" working as 3D shapes.
In cartooning, it's much more important that the character has the appropriate vibe and personality from every angle.
This often means throwing out physical consistency for aesthetics.
