I've recently learned that the Nintendo shows produced by DIC were not actually a brand synergy deal, DIC had to pay Nintendo to use the IPs and the later conpany was so uninterested in the projects that they didn't even knew that the Mario Super Show and Captain N lasted more than one season. Both shows were big hits for DIC, so they kept producing episodes regardless
But the interesting thing is that this would mean that DIC must have bought games and manuals to do research by thenselves to produce and introduce characters for the subsequent Mario 3 and Mario World sequel shows, since Nintendo only sent them character sheets and concept art for the first game
Also, it's hard to tell how do they got rights for konami, capcom and Tetris (which had a very ugly fight over the distribution rights between Tengen and Nintendo at the time) IPs for Captain N

It's trademarked by POG Unlimited who owns or owned the trademark for it for practically every purpose they could
Most of them have obviously expired because nobody gives a shit about pogs anymore but the documentation is still online

n 2008, DIC was acquired by Cookie Jar Group in June and was later folded into Cookie Jar in July. As of 2023, most of the DIC library is currently owned by WildBrain (formerly DHX Media) after the company acquired Cookie Jar in October 2012.

The issue with 90s anime dubs for TV was of course the direction and censorship due to amerifat tv regulations being the perfect scapegoat to fuck rewrite these shows by people who got uncomfortable or didn't understood the originals, but the voice actors themselves weren't much of a problem, at least in Canadian dubs, those at least had really good voices with uncovered potential, but the direction sucked.

Then 2000s anime dubs onwards just stuck to the worst of Los Angeles and Texas and 99% of the time only using THEIR own set of voice actors and ALMOST NEVER letting the good voice actors who worked on American cartoons work on these, like, you NEVER herd any of the DCAU voices in anime, wherever is "uncut" anime releases or Edited for TV 4kids trite, like, you never heard Candi Milo or Rob Paulsen or the Animaniacs Tom ruegger voices or Kevin Conroy in an anime, nope, it's always generic texan voices or stupid ridiculous anime dub voices.

And yes the new Sailor moon dub is just, heh, it's not even that accurate to the subbed version.

I meanh sure, ANYTHING is an improvement over the Cloverway dub with it's infamous Linda Ballyntine "meatball head" Usagi voice, but the dad reality of it all is that what we got at the end, still kinda sucks, I m fine with Stephanie Shie as Usagi, but like who the fuck tought THAT Viz sailor Jupiter voice was good?

And speaking of "theater vs porn actors", yes is me still >>150120544, another PERFECT example, is Castlevania Symphony of the Night, like one of my favorite PS1 game, next to Tomba.

Neither of its English dubs is accurate to Japan's original script, and the 1st dubhas the baggage of being done using a poorly translated script by the japanese who apparently didn't even did it by themselves but by using Chinese middleman, (for real that was actually a practice back then) who were half following the japanese script but barely understood and half making shit up, hence we got "Die Monster, You don't belong in this World", "Darkling I smell on your blood, could it be?" And "What is a man?, A miserable little pile of Secrets!", those were obviously badly translated English with made up shit, but it got actual good actors who were theater actors and did the best they could, given their weird circumstances, cause at least these were AMERICAN actors who could, you know, ACT, and speak good English, but still limited and force to read from a badly translated English Script, without any input from their part of any "Hey, Are you sure this is properly translated? Type of suggestion, yet the voices at least sound decent enough, and hey, it was still a step above Capcom's "let's just do the dub here in Japan which whoever Caucasian looking guys that could speak English we could find, to read or badly translated Japanese to Chinglish script" case in point, MegaMan's 8 and X4, and of course RE1 (the original), then Capcom would switch to letting Americans rewrite their scripts and do the voice acting in American from RE2 onwards.

Then you have the PSP redub of SotN which Konami has been using ever since, they promote the living shit out of this thing as an accurate retranslation of the original japanese script, guess what? iT WASNT, just the old English Script rewritten in actual non Chinglish or Japanese English, but with more made up bullshit! And worse voices.

It costs a arm and a leg to get Jim Cummings and Tress MacNeille to do voices, Konami does not have Jim Cummings and Tress MacNeille money.
>>
>>150120849
>It costs a arm and a leg to get Jim Cummings and Tress MacNeille to do voices, Konami does not have Jim Cummings and Tress MacNeille money.

But what about Nintendo? Or Sony? Did Konami in the 90s DIDNT have money? Why do we have to stuck with the Monica Rials or the 4kids voice actors for all dubbed anime in the 2000s?
>>
>>150120862
Sony had the money, but their voices were not what they were going for as Sony was going for AAA live action blockbuster, not Jim Cummings and Tress MacNeille.

Nintendo on the other hand, with the soul exception of Charles Martinet who lives in San Jose California who retired on his own merits Nintendo reserves themselves on voice actors with in the Redmond area because of cost, many of them ever are directly from Nintendo of America/Treehouse as well but most of their voice actors came from live theater.

Pokémon is it's own thing.

There does seem like a pretty huge difference in quality when they were churning out Alf Tales, Kidd Video, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Dinosaucers and then a couple years later it's Hammer Man, Mario World, Wish Kid, and Super Dave. It's like they used what would be the budget for one series, and stretched it over 4-5 series instead so everything collectively looked like shit.

The guys who voiced PS1 SoTN are not theater actors, they were random nobodies who lived in Japan at jobs like wrestling announcing, book narration and dj'ing, and just happened to speak english. They're the same people who did the voice acting for shit like Megaman 8, X4 and X7 and Resident Evil 1, and no one sane would question that these games have awful voice acting. The PSP voice acting isn’t anything special but at least the voice actors there are professionals. People have this impression because Robert Belgrade did have a legitimately good performance and Yuri Lowenthal sounds like a downgrade in comparison, but every other VA in the PS1 version sounds like a porn actor recording in a phone booth.
>>
>>150129757
The best voice in SoTN PS1 is easily Dracula

>>
Does anyone know if DIC did the voices for every episode of Sailor Moon or just the first two seasons?

Where can the DIC version be found? The new voices are so horrible!
>>
>>150094269
Why do breadtubers hate this cartoon? Horseland had a multicultural cast. Only Bronies hated this show online back in the day.
>>
>>150132394
The DiC version is even worse.

Sorry that you can't have Kath Soucie and E. G. Daily voce those characters.
>>
>>150132452
For people who grew up watching the DIC version, anything else is like nails on the chalk board.

Same thing with Pokemon past Season 9 when they get rid of the original voice actors, it becomes entirely unwatchable
>>
>>150132426
>Why do breadtubers hate this cartoon?
They do? I can’t help I’m afraid, until very recently I thought a breadtube was some kind of unappealing sounding new snack food.
>>
>>150132484
No, it's more like "For anyone who knows what good voice actors are like Mel Blanc and Stan Freberg, anything else not on their level such as anime dub actors is like nails on the chalk board."

You're not getting June Foray levels of talent in a anime dub.
>>
>>150132484

This, cant watch anything that came later even if its better.

>>150132394

Im having a hard time believing this is real since the tapes came so much later like when it aired on cartoon network.
>>
>>150132775
The tapes used to be sold at Toys R Us, I don't know if that image is real but I just wanted to find a Sailor Moon image with the DiC insignia since that was the best version. Yes, we grew up with it too.

When it was airing on Cartoon Network in the afternoons (just before Toonami), the only way to get it was from the 1 or 2 tapes that were for sale at Toys R Us, I think Target sometimes sold them with early DBZ but other than that, you would have to record those shows on VHS. Those VHS records sold for shitloads of money too, I remember in 2001 my friend's sister was buying them on eBay and we went to conventions because she wanted to get all the Sailor Moon episodes from people who recorded the episodes on TV elsewhere.

Before streaming, it was pretty crazy! I did the same with some DiC shows like Inspector Gadget and Heathcliff

For me Sabrina, Inspector Gadget, Heathcliff minus the Catillac Cats.. Heathcliff was the only thing interesting, and the second show is boring.

I feel like once you've seen Sabrina, you've seen the personality of every DIC cartoon. It feels like they just use the same characters over and over again, but in different settings

Others is Outsourced Nostalgia and at least Inspector Gadget felt more unique and original. until Gadget Boy came about. Also there was those weird DIC Movie Toons that were mostly boring as well.
>>
>>150133921
Right, that is what I said; I was looking for an image of Sailor Moon with DiC stamped on it and only found that one, its in the filename too.

As far as I know, the DiC version of Sailor Moon is only available on a handful of VHS tapes, someone I know got one or two of them at Target or Toys R Us which was the only way to get them, other than by watching and recording it to VHS on network TV before it started to air on Cartoon Network a few years down the line.

The DiC Sailor Moon was the best because of the voices, the really catchy songs and music, and I think that Andy Heyward was responsible for doing the 'Sailor Says' segments just like with Inspector Gadget and the other DiC shows with public service messages

If Archie (or Archie's weird mysteries) is too chicken to do the fun stuff, then it's up to the side-series like Sabrina to take up the challenge. Would it be Gem loses her memory and Sabrina has to do the right thing, or would it be Sabrina spell goes wrong and Harvey has to rescue her?

Pretty much, The girls (and one token guy) take lessons at the Horseland Ranch and they do the usual "learn life lessons and form bonds" thing. The ranch routinely puts on (and takes part in) shows or parades and that's mostly what the lessons are all for. The horses do talk amongst themselves and the life lessons they learn are part of the human's life lessons.

On a side note they have a dog that talks like Sean Connery.
>>
>>150094945
It depended on the client's budget/the freedom they gave the writers, etc. DiC was basically a modern Ruby Spears--as in they made cartoons to advertise for toy/game/etc companies. It all depended on what the client wanted.

For every "Hammerman" or "Wish Kid", you had shows like Sonic SatAM, for example, which had a huge budget from SEGA, and very involved/dedicated writing staff. Even AoSTH had huge money behind it (And was designed by Milton Knight).

The only AOSTH episodes that had a huge budget were Black Bot the Pirate, Hedgehog of the 'Hound' Table, Robotnik's Pyramid Scheme, Prehistoric Sonic and Super Robotnik, the remaining episode followed DiC's "Do It Cheap" moniker they have been following since the late 80s.

Ans Telecom STILL outsourced most of the animation for Black Bot the Pirate, Hedgehog of the 'Hound' Table, Robotnik's Pyramid Scheme, Prehistoric Sonic due to still having a smaller budget then they got from Animaniacs, as with Super Robotnik while done in house had 3 head animators (Kenji Hachizaki did the first half of the episode, Yuichiro Yano did the second half of the episode while Hiroyuki Aoyama did the Sonic Says segment) doing segments because Farewell to Nostradamus was Telecom's main focus at that time.

SatAM was the show that had a decent budget (which came from ABC, nor Sega) and that was almost entirely spent on the voice cast since everything else was still done by Korean and Chinese studios.
>>
>>150141163
Their cinematic universe was a few compilation dvds? What even is a cinematic universe? Many main characters from different series gathering together to fight crime? Or a series of movie-type movies, like "Liberty and the Littles"? Trolls, Inspector Gadget, and Shortcake was entirely self-contained no crossovers, right?
