I considered becoming a police officer at one point, but the thing that killed my interest was realizing that 90% of what I'd be doing would be giving people speeding tickets, ticketing them for expired registration stickers, and enforcing drug laws, gun laws or other shit that I don't believe in.What sealed the deal was realizing some random black guy high on pcp might run screaming at me with a knife and shooting him might end with me going to jail or having my livelihood completely ruined simply because I refuse to let myself get stabbed to death, that makes me "racist". As in, they were just a guy who lived in said community for a while and became a police officer. It is fascinating how quickly public trust plummeted. Not saying that it wasn't warranted, and there are definitely cops who shouldn't be anywhere near the police force. But part of me feels that the visceral reaction feels almost manufactured to erode public trust. I guess it depends on what the police are like in your city or town.
