Can an adaptation surpass it's source material?

Sometimes, if the source material is shit
>the Venom arc in 90s SMTAS
>the Civil War movie
>DCAU Amazo
I don't think I have many more examples though

Stuff like the Timmverse shows did improve mediocre stuff from the comics.
>>
>>150123707
But also ruined better stuff like Knightfall, because they hated Bane.

They also completely botched Hugo Strange by turning him into effectively a comic relief villain.

MCU Civil War? That was shit compared to the comic.

Would also disagree with Venom as cartoon didn't really get across how much of a psychological menace Venom was by knowing who peter was.

Adaptions tend to be good at getting rid of the clusterfuck comics create like clone saga or getting to the heart of the conflict with Crisis on Infinite earths. Modern tend to also benefit as comics are now made with movies/shows in mind first and shit anyways.

It told a more concise and less edgy story and didn't have to character assassinate Iron Man since he was always an asshole.

I really don't care about that. The original Venom appearance is shit because we don't know who the fuck Eddie Brock is. Admittedly I'm biased because I watched the 90s cartoon before I read ASM #300 and other michelinie Venom issues. But I think it's telling that every single adaptation that included Eddie after that bothered to introduce Eddie as a character first, and then the symbiote. Not the symbiote first and then Eddie out of nowhere. Because one of these approaches actually allows Eddie to be a somewhat sympathetic character whose downfall you're observing, instead of just some guy who was retconned into existing in the Sin Eater plotline one day.

Also I just remembered another example of an adaptation improving the original character with pic related.

>Civil war
Being edgy and throwing the world for a spin was the point. Defiantly had its flaws such as no real clarity on just wtf the laws were. But the MCU adaption is just utter shit as Tony still gets character capped from going from maverick to trying to become world police. It just doesn't work as a story when supers aren't numerous or around for a long time.

>Venom
Well no helping that. I don't think the 90s beat the comics but I can't judge the other ones as I could see an adaption doing it better with an Eddie who has been around for a few eps, gets the suit after the SW fall out, and acts as the first antagonist to know Peter. Problem is most adaptions will skip the last part in favor of wacky suit man these days.

I don't think that's really a big deal because he was already somewhat trying to be a control freak with Ultron.
>It just doesn't work as a story when supers aren't numerous or around for a long time.
I think it makes the final battle more focused since it's just a handful of them and the emphasis is on the convictions they're fighting for.

Is that Kate Kane?

you have to be mark millar himself defending civil war. EVERYTHING about that comic was complete garbage. one of the very few times the MCU took a concept and did it significantly better.

Ironically they also made a lesser version of Mad Love than the original comic

Anyway, I think Superman and Lois did the best version of the death and return of Superman but objectively the two DCAMU movies are the best actual adaptation

He has a Kate Kane reaction pic, he's clearly affected with a terminal case of what medical experts call "shit taste".
