What makes the first HTTYD better than the sequels?

It came out before Astrid’s reputation was ruined.

I liked 2 better than 1.

Humans vs dragons was a better hook

It kept things simple and was more of a personal story about Hiccup forming an unlikely friendship and gaining the respect of his village. The second movie should have been about him looking for his mother. Making it about defeating the screaming one-armed caveman didn't have the same pathos as anything in the first. Also, Stoick's death feels cheap. The third movie is just a made-for-streaming type story meant to make this story match the books.
