The comic was never meant to be a big deal, it was originally Tracy's way of keeping her skills sharp while floating between concept artist jobs for game studios and such. She always intended to work towards a job in animation, and now she not only has that, she's making a show based on her own work and characters! Of course she's going to set the comic aside, if I was in her place I likely would too! It deeply sucks to admit but the Lackadaisy comic- despite how much I and many others prefer it to the cartoon- is a vestigial project at this point. Now that the show is being made I don't think Tracy considers continuing it to be a priority at all. It also doesn't help that the amount of people excited for the show probably outnumber the amount of people waiting for a new page of the comic. Probably by a lot.
I don't care if the series never comes out because Michael Kovach and ProZD are terrible voice actors and casting them as the main characters wiped away any interest I had.

If they actually manage to finish the story in the cartoon, it's gonna be superfluous to go back and finish the comic. Unless if the cartoon is intended to diverge towards a totally different direction that will not spoil the comic's ending.Tracy has been talking about how she intends to go back to the comic at some point. But that doesn't seem consistent with the way the cartoon's been handled. It looks more like they intended to shift away from the webcomic all along and focus their resources on the cartoon. Even the side comics and sketches these days are drawn in the cartoon's simple style instead of the more elaborate and polished webcomic style.

I don't know if the plan has remained the same throughout the years.Since the characters have backstories that get vaguely hinted at in the comic or briefly referenced in Q&A sessions with fans, I suppose it would be possible to make endless spinoff comics about things that happened both before, during or after the main story.
They just put out a video like a month ago, it's still happening and there's apparently some big news coming soon. Probably around NYCC.
