Start doing this.

We can't because 3DCG exists and we're all too butthurt and have to exaggerate how flat cartoons are

the epitome of diminishing returns.

As beautiful as Theif and thr Cobbler is can we stop pretending it's a good movie? Even the recobbled cut shows that Williams was a terrible story teller.

I can feel the months of work

It's unique, expressive, and has a human-like quality in how surreal it is. It's vastly more valuable than a generic "good" movie. It's honestly kinda nuts how people will see one of the coolest animated films ever and just say "nah this sucks" because it doesn't directly correspond to the normal 3-act formulaic routine.

Films succeed or fail as a complete package; competent animation can only take an incompetent writing, voice-acting, score, and editing so far. Nobody’s doubting the level of animation on display here, but without anything else going for it, all it succeeds in doing is making the world’s most expensive, least successful demo reel.

So could the studio - it’s why the project went way over budget and behind schedule and was ultimately taken away from him and hastily finished.

Why?

It's worth watching just for the thief.
I wasn't expecting to like this stinky boy so much.

He has goblin energy. He even kinda looks like a goblin.

I feel this way unironically about the latest batman movie.

and the live action HTTYD proved that what people want is the complete package

A film cannot stand on one element alone, sorry but that's not how it works. Shorts work better for that practice but if someone is investing that much time to a format made to tell a story then the story needs to be good too.

Imagine if Williams had distilled all this talent to a 15 minute short instead of trying to make a feature film.

The story and presentation are not bad. Each scene has an easily understandable premise and resolution. The overall structure is not directly 1:1 compared to most films ever made, but it's unfair to say it's "bad" because it operates within its own prose. I don't see why it's too objectionable to say that films serve as an aesthetic experience. The film clearly has its own persona. Also I just reject the idea that films can't be appreciated for 1 aspect anyway. It's ridiculous.
