>capeshit cartoon starring a bunch of C/D tier heroes lead by batman’s sidekick>superman, wonder woman, flash, green lantern etc don’t appear>weird anime influence in a time where xenophobia was still common>theme song is some bizarre j-pop/rock music sung by japanese girls instead of the usual cinematic orchestral american superhero music>it all somehow worked and was successful to the point of having an even more successful spin-off that still gets new episodes to this day and became DC’s longest running cartoonHow did they pull it off?
>>150149076Because it was good ESL
>>150149076>good writing>good action>good designs>good voice acting>catchy theme songIt just works.
The comic was already pretty successful when it was running in the 80's so they had a good foundation to built off, Most of the memorable characters also were primarily birthed in the comic so the questions kinda apply onto it tooI think they were write to cut off the fat/Speedy and Wonder Girl, really streamlined it
>weird anime influenceAnime was booming
People just like new characters they're not used toStatic Shock was really memorable, but I didn't give a shit about the time the Justice League randomly showed up
>>150149076Teen Titans was pretty much lightning in a bottle because of just how much it stood out by all the anime/japanese appeal alone. There’ll never be another show like it and it’d be pretty hard to replicate, I don’t think it could even be made today despite all the “anime-influenced” cartoons we have now, it’s that good.

>>150149076Good writing and good art direction nigga, the 2 top priorities of all animation
>>150149114WHERE IS ELDER SCROLLS 6, TODD?!>>150149076What does anime influence mean? Good art? Is that what it means?
>>150149201This show had anime like designs and gags
>>150149076>weird anime influence in a time where xenophobia was still commonOnly adults thought it was weird. If you were a kid growing up with Dragon Ball Z and Naruto and other Toonami anime, Teen Titans had strong appeal. By comparison Justice League seemed too old fashion and boring. It was written by adults that wanted to write something that would also enjoy, and that's probably why I also got into the DCAU later. But Teen Titans was unapologetically a kids and early teens show. While most superhero cartoons in the 1990s and 2000s were influenced by the comics (not a bad thing but can be alienating to the kid audience born long after Teen Titans comics were relevant), the Teen Titans cartoon disregarded the comic audience completely and tried to appeal solely to kids in the 2000s.>theme song is some bizarre j-pop/rock music sung by japanese girls instead of the usual cinematic orchestral american superhero musicAnother reason Teen Titans was hip and exciting.>capeshit cartoon starring a bunch of C/D tier heroes lead by batman’s sidekickIt's a clean slate. None of us knew who Burt Ward was, so Robin was always cool to our generation.>superman, wonder woman, flash, green lantern etc don’t appearMaybe this is just me, but it always made the Teen Titans world seems more mysterious and interesting that it was part of a larger universe that we don't entirely see.
>>150149226>anime like designsSo yeah good art. Gotcha.
>>150149180bitch
>>150149201Murakami was inspired by old toku and superhero anime he watched as a kid as much as the comics>>150149250Come on dude you know where all the chibi stuff comes from
>>150149238>While most superhero cartoons in the 1990s and 2000s were influenced by the comics (not a bad thing but can be alienating to the kid audience born long after Teen Titans comics were relevant)Good example is the 90's Spider-man show, which I really loved but you can't deny that Spectacular Spider-man had its own charm by going with its own unique style >Maybe this is just me, but it always made the Teen Titans world seems more mysterious and interesting that it was part of a larger universe that we don't entirely see.Absolutely. Focusing on C and D listers let them actually stand on their own
This was also not the first Teen Titans cartoon.
WHEN THERES EVIL ON THE ATTACKYOU CAN REST KNOWING THEY GOT YOUR BACKCAUSE WHEN THE WORLD NEEDS HEROES ON PATROOOOOOOOOOOOL
>>150149363I will give TTG props for parodying it
>>150149076>I always thought it was weird how Teen Titans 2003 went out of their way to never reference a single A-list hero, to the point of not even saying "Batman" or "Deathstroke", but TTGo is just "DC Universe gags the series"
>>150149321Chibi is far superior than bean mouth
>>150149494Because Teen Titans 2003 was literally forbidden from doing sohttps://dcau.fandom.com/wiki/Bat-embargoIt's funny how much DC/Warner doesn't give a fuck about this kind of thing anymore, now there's going to be two different Batman movie actors at the same time (Battinson and Gunnverse) and no one cares about oversaturation.
>>150149250Stfu
>>150149494They did fight on top of a "WAYNE" building when Robin was Slade's apprentice.
>>150149076Good theme song. That's half of what makes a good cartoon.
>>150149494>but TTGo is just "DC Universe gags the series"I like it when they at least go obscure with it. The yearbook episode mentions motherfucking Haunted Tank of all series. But early on it was just HEY REMEMBER BATMAN HAHA JOKER HAHA SUPERMAN. They didn't know Beast Boy is from Doom Patrol or other stuff until years later, probably because DC slapped their asses to do cross promotional stuff The Slade stuff is because they couldn't say Death in a kid's show Terminator probably had copyright issues though, Slade is a NTT original so he belongs in the titan's corner of the universe
>>150150235I think it was subtle enoughRaven enters Robin's mind and sees his parents dying at the circus A random thug namedrops Gotham during the origin of the Titans episode, which is as blatant as you need to be It's not like in TTG where they just see Batman and the batcave every so often
>>150149076>weird anime influence in a time where xenophobia was still commonthe fuckthere was already a sizeable weaboo subculture there, and although anime isn't as normalised as it is now, it was already popular with teens at the time
>>150149076I don't know how to tell you but sometimes you don't ride on recognition but you introduce new characters and then people learn to like them. Most people who watched probably assumed that everyone except Robin is an OC.Cartoon was just smart enough to take all good ideas from Titans and improve on what was lackingI mean, this has to be the only genuinely good Cyborg design.
>>150149076>where xenophobia was still common But it was before Obama's racially divisive presidency
>>150152093You’re too young to remember the era where boomers feared Japan taking over the animation and toy industry like they did the automobile industry
>>150149180newfag
>>150149076>C/D Tier heroesPopularity tiers are nonsense, they change all the time like with the GOTG and OCs break out in these shows too like Harley Quinn. The Boys wasn't even a big 2 comic and the people who liked the comic mostly shit-talk it. Just make the damn thing and market it if you like the content.
Boomers really carried that Pearl Harbor hate when Japanese media or stuff inspired by Japan was becoming popular
>>150149363For any value of "characters who existed by the 1970s", modern cartoon is probably not the first, Filmation was.
>>150149076>>weird anime influence in a time where xenophobia was still commonAnon there were literally a dozen networks with anime blocks at the time and the kids this show was targeted at grew up watching Pokemon, Sailor Moon, DBZ, and pretty much anything that ran on Toonami. If you walked into bookstores or video rental stores back then they had entire sections dedicated just to anime/manga with big displays up front telling you where to go to find them. Spirited Away had just premiered in theaters the previous year and was a massive box office and critical success. This came out during what was regarded as a huge anime boom in the US.
>>150149076>>weird anime influence in a time where xenophobia was still commonThis website was created literally the same year that Teen Titans premiered because anime was becoming extremely popular and m00tles wanted a place to discuss it.
>>150152448>>150152501>>150149076I mean, the comic nerds, the original grognards still shat all over anime and manga stuff back in those days. They weren't the ones making the show nor the public it was aimed for, but there were 100% nerds at the time that fucking hated japanese stuff. I remember all the hate Pokémon got when it first came out and all the newground flash games where you killed pikachu and such.
>>150153091Fair enough but OP's asking about the broad success of Teen Titans '03 which obviously isn't factoring niche comic nerds into account.
>>150151819>and although anime isn't as normalised as it is nowIt was more normalized. No one complained about things like fanservice.
>>150149076The characters are fun instead of miserable capeshlock where they mumble about their dead wives
>>150149238It also raises stakes for the 5 main characters to a degree. They're not kids but not adults so things like Robin being blackmailed by Slade hit a lot harder.>>150149321Alot of episodes feel like somethibg you'd see from a 60s era Titans. Mad Mod's episodes, the Puppet King, Robin being trained by animals, Ding Dong Daddy, Larry's World, Cyborg the Barbarian, etc.
>>150153091>I mean, the comic nerds, the original grognards still shat all over anime and manga stuff back in those daysAt the same time, one of the main places to buy manga and anime was comic shops. The thing is, alot of those same erly weebs dislikedPokemon for being too kiddie, and would've hated fake anime.
>>150153583>No one complained about things like fanservice.Because they were censoring fanservice on TV broadcasts, so unless you went online and saw the boobs and pantie shots being erased you wouldn't know
>>150153930Even the censored version of Dragon Ball that aired on Toonami had Roshi lusting after a 16 year old girl's belly button. It's amazing what they got away with. Have you seen Abenobashi? That aired on Tech TV and had a gag about a 12 year old girl losing her panties. I knew a girl who thought it was fun that in Chobits the robot girl's activation button was her clit, so it's not like they didn't know this stuff got weird. Nowadays people complain about the invisible girl being shown nude in My Hero Academia and want anime to be westernized.
>>150153930Depended heavily on the series, network, and joke in question. Some channels were just straight up airing uncensored Japanese works like AZN Network while others like CN even let some pretty sketchy stuff slide. The fact that they even aired Tenchi Muyo at all is a testament to that.
>>150154542The Sailor Moon DIC dub got away with a lot too, but that was because it SOMETIMES aired in syndication. Pic related was left in the dub.
